II. Content/Description

Music
• It is the art of combining vocal and instrumental sounds or both to produce beauty of form , harmony
and expression of emotion.
• It is an art form whose media are sound and silence.
• It tells stories, breaks hearts, reduces us to tears or seduces us into falling in love, over and over again.

Two Main Type of Music


Program Music- It is a type of art music that attempts to musically render an extra musical narrative. The
narrative itself be offered to the audience in the form of program notes, inviting imaginative correlations with
the music.

Absolute Music- It is a music that is not explicitly “about” anything; in contrast to program music, it is non-
representational and is primarily intended to be appreciated without any particular reference from the outside
world.

Function of Music
• Worship- Music can be used for worshiping the Almighty. Music has been used in religious and
spiritual activities.

• Emotional Expression- Music releases our emotions. Music is used to pour out emotion of people, no
matter how we feel, there is always a corresponding music to fit on what we feel today.

• Music Strengthening Nationalism- Music helps stir emotions by providing an avenue to help us
express our deep love for one’s country by awakening our emotions.

• Validations of Social Institutions and Religious Rituals- Many cultures of institutions have a song
that embodies part of their individual culture-fight song.

• Entertainment- Music is also used for entertainment and to kill boredom by giving us the joy of
listening experience when we hear it and respond.

• Music Collaborates with other arts- Music is also used in other arts and sciences such as dances,
mathematics, poetry, painting, language and other related arts.

• Contributes to the continuity and stability of culture- Music of exploring other culture music also
gives us a glimpse of the cultures, traditions, and everyday life of other nations.

• Physical Response- Listening to fast-paced, upbeat music helps runners to run quicker pace.
Music Media
Sound- Is produced by vibrations. Sound is produced when an object vibrates and it is what can be perceived by
living organisms.

Vibrations- Can be regular and irregular. Regular vibrations create pleasing sounds or tone. Irregular vibrations
create unpleasing sound and is usually considered as noise.

Silence- is the absence of sound or noise.

Music Genre
• Classical- It is a traditional genre of music conforming to an established form and appealing to critical
interest and developed musical taste. Many styles of music exist within classical music the most
recognizable being the symphony, opera, choral works, chamber music, concerto, sonata, suite, etude,
Gregorian chant, the madrigal and the mass.

• Hip-hop - It is a style of popular music, typically consisting of a rhythmic, rhyming vocal style called
rapping. Over backing beats and scratching performed on a turntable by a DJ. Hip-hop music ics the
cultural context of rap music found in the urban style of dress, speech and art.

• Oldies- It is a term commonly used to describe a radio format that usually concentrates on Top 40 music
from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s. Oldies are typically from R&B, pop and rock music genres.

• Pop- It is an ample and imprecise category of modern music not defined by artistic considerations but
by its potential audience or prospective market. It is very electric, often borrowing elements from other
styles.

• Rhythm and Blues- It is a popular music genre combining jazz, gospel, and blues influences, first
performed by African Americans artists. It retained an emphasis on vocals while adding a more
pronounced beat characteristics of the blues.

• Reggae- It is a popular music of Jamaican origin having elements of Calypso, soul and rock and
characterized by a strongly accentuated offbeat. It is based on a rhythm style characterized by regular
chops on the off-beat, known as skank.

Singing Voice Types


A voice type is particular kind of human singing voice perceived as having certain identifying qualities or
characteristics.

Voice Classification is the process by which human voices are evaluated and are therby designated into voice
types.

Musical Instruments
A musical instruments is any device for producing a musical sound.

Stringed Instruments- or chordophones are musical instruments that


produce sound from vibrating strings when a performer plays or sounds
the strings.

Woodwinds-It is a type of musical instrument that you play by blowing


into its mouthpiece.

Brass Instruments- It is a musical wind instrument made of brass


metal or with a cup-shaped mouthpiece.

Percussion Instruments- It is any instrument that makes a sound


when it is hit, shaken, or scraped.
