HIMALA (MIRACLE)

JUANITO TORRES 2009

We can often hear the term “himala” or phrases such as “himala iyan…” “may himala!”
and anything that exaggerate the word “himala”, we often hear it from our grandparents
or grand grandparents because back in their time, we all know that life back then was
poor to the point that it is impossible to afford hospital bills, to buy imported medicine, or
to even have a check up from a specialist. Due that, people especially with low incomes
has left with no choice but to come to someone who has this ability to cure illnesses with
the process of praying. Just like that, as we can see in the image above, it looks like an
old house filled with religious statues and a long queueing of people that all seems to be
sick and just accompanied by a family. There, we see this woman who seems to be the
“faith healer” she’s praying deeply to the God’s above and holding her hands in a way
that looks like the hand of the Virgin Mary. On the floor, the woman was carrying his son
who’s sick and the father who’s also praying to the side. I have this feeling that the position
of the kid laying on the floor, depicts The photo of “Mary at the Crucifixion”. Nonetheless,
this just means that this canvas of Mr. Juanito Torres, symbolizes not just the old life our
fellow Pilipino but also the faith healers who we once have faith on curing us.
PAPUNTA KA PALANG, PABALIK NA AKO

JAYPEE SAMSON 2009

I guess we all have heard of this famous phrase before or up until now. Papunta ka
palang, Pabalik na ako. Usually, our parents or anyone who’s older than us we’re the one
who’s saying this line, this line metaphorically says that the speaker has more
experiences and knowledge about a certain thing or topic since they are the old ones,
and we, the younger side has less experiences than they have. But honestly speaking,
for me this famous line could have a double meaning depending on the situation you are
using it or your tone while saying it. Others could use this in a lighthearted way to
acknowledge someone’s effort about the topic, could use it to encourage someone who’s
having difficulty in a path that you have surpassed, or to suggest and offer guidance based
on your own experiences. On the other hand, on the darker side, this also can be used to
belittle someone’s effort specially if that person seems to have a harder time unlike you
that have handle it way easier. Nonetheless, I want to praise the painter for choosing an
old woman to paint, because it’s like that the old woman was saying it’s title on me.
I AM THE GHOST

2024

This painting was intriguing, not just because the title but because of its abstract form.
Analyzing the figure above we can somehow notice that it is a figure of a man, however
it’s facial features are not visible enough to know its expression. What I noticed is that
with the mix of different colors the color yellow, stand out the most, and I thought of maybe
there’s something about the color yellow or maybe yellow symbolizes something that is
connected to the man or it represents something about his emotion. Also, the more I stare
at it, the more images appear to my eyes, down below near his chest, colored red things
seems to be a woman to me. Maybe, since it is near in his chest, it represents love, or it
is the woman he adored. Nonetheless, I love this kind of paintings, the kind of you’ll have
to stare at it for awhile before you fully understand what does it represent or what is it’s
meaning
BLUE SKREEN-KOTILLION

JOSE TENCE RUIZ – 2008

I looked on the internet about what does this “Kotillion” means, to my surprise it is just a
birthday celebration that is celebrated when the woman or the debutant turns 18. For us
girls, this is a crucial part of our lives for it symbolizes that we are finally a young adult,
and can freely socialize with the opposite gender. Basically, this painting is about a woman
who’s in a cotillion or actually the debutant that wears a gown, but rather to have an
elegant ballroom gown, she wears a gown that is made from garbage, some metallic
excess and rusty objects. In short, what our debutant wear aren’t even appealing to the
eyes but rather makes you uneasy, because imagine the weight of that gown that is made
from metal. I also looked up on what does the “BLUE-SKREEN” mean, based on my
findings it is a projector background screen that is used to film production. With the help
of this the woman can be edited into a place that compromises its appeal, style and the
ways she was dressed.
TWILIGHT

JIM ORENCIO – 1995

The reason behind I captured this photo back when we visited Pinto Art Museum was
because I am very fond of scenic paintings. The moment I laid my eyes on this art, I knew
for a fact that I would want make a reflection about it. That’s why I looked up for it’s author
hoping to know what is his preference for making this art, and to know if this place even
exist. To my surprise, it is actually a spot in Pinto Art Museum, and it is called as Silangan
Gardens. What I also like in this art is that, at the back you can clearly see that the sun is
setting to rest, that’s why the surroundings seems to be darkening, and maybe that is the
reason why it is called Twilight. I personally like the texture and on how he decided to
paint it. Impressive. And while staring at it, I am questioning myself like do I recognize this
spot? did our group eventually discover this path while roaming around? And then it hit
me, I remember that small bridge where we all crossed and laughing that it might fall out.
Maybe we got here, maybe, I am just unaware.
MY WEDDING GOWN USED AS A LOOM

The clothing appears to be floating, adding to the dramatic presentation’s impact and lead
to the impression of a story that has stopped or of suspended time, allowing viewers to
reflect on the tale or the sensations that are captured in this still moment. These kinds of
installations are commonly used in modern art to challenge assumptions about symbols
and to reframe them in fresh, visually arresting ways. In general, the work of art immerses
the viewer in a philosophical and visual analysis of transformation, fragility, and the
temporary aspect of significant life events, depicted via an artistic adapted piece of
apparel.
FILL NA FEEL

The formation of contemporary features, like the visible mechanical or digital components
makes a fascinating contrast between the ancient and the modern on the figure’s thigh.
This pertains to themes of change, evolution, or even the combination of technology and
humans; these could be associated with transhumanism or the technological
enhancement of human potential. Discussions regarding the preservation of human
legacy in a world where technology is developing quickly, the shifting standards of
perfection and beauty, and the ethical implications of human enhancement technologies
are often sparked by this kind of artwork. It is possible to interpret the combination of
traditional human form with technological components as an assessment of both cultural
values and the current stage of human development.
UNTITLED (1992)

GEPO TAPALES

The figures’ bare skin, which conveys their essence or spirit without boundaries, might be
seen as a metaphor for vulnerability or sincerity. Strong emotional or psychological ties
are also implied by the figures’ intimate physical contact and expressions. The usage of
blue, a hue frequently associated with melancholy or reflection, could refer to themes of
sorrow, introspection, or intense emotional experience. From an artistic perspective, the
method might have been influenced by expressionism, a movement that values emotional
expression over objective reality. This kind of representation usually aims to convey more
profound emotional truths, drawing the viewer into a thoughtful dialogue with the interior
lives of the characters.
BARKER

ELMER BOLONGAN

A man using a crutch and carrying a megaphone seems to be leading or taking part in a
protest or rally. He is obviously expressive or impassioned. The bus in the background
may indicate that this is a public gathering, perhaps for social or political purposes. The
man is clearly trying to inspire a crowd or convey a message, as shown by his dynamic
stance and use of the megaphone, which highlights his role as a leader or active
participant despite his physical limitations. His Intense, laser-like attention conveys a
deep emotional commitment to his goal. This contrast could highlight the intensity and
urgency of the stated circumstance. The piece could touch on such like endurance, the
importance of interacting with society, the strength of voice, and activism worries in spite
of individual physical barriers. The artwork evokes a tale of bravery and tenacity, and it
offers several narrative opportunities.
KAHIT MAPUTI NA ANG BUHOK KO

JAYPESS SAMSON

Portrayed with a degree of realism clearly conveys their age and facial emotions,
suggesting a likely strong sense of community or personal connection to the place behind
them. Both the woman and the man seem serious and respectful. Implying that this
particular moment is significant. The woman is carrying a basket that could be filled with
objects with ceremonial or personal value. The picture can be addressing issues of aging,
history, or continuity within a family or cultural context. It invites viewers to reflect on the
life experiences and narratives of the pair in addition to how they relate to the region in
which they are displayed. More specifically, it cannot be decided in the absence of
additional details regarding the creator or the context of the piece, but the painting clearly
communicates a strong sense of cultural identity and personal history.
