Reading Response Rubric

4  The student understands the question and responds using text evidence (paraphrased).
Excellent  The student writes a complete answer to the question.
Work  The answer is organized and does not leave the reader with questions. Uses mature or advanced vocabulary.
(85-100)  The response stays on topic. Ideas are linked together with advanced transitions (however,
although, unfortunately, on the other hand).
 The response has a lasting thought that applies to the question and a life application (big idea).
 The response has correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
3  The student understands the question and responds using text evidence.
Good Work  The response is a mostly complete answer.
(70-85)  The answer is somewhat organized. Uses specific grade-level vocabulary and transitions.
 The response maintains reasonable focus and ideas are linked.
 The response has a lasting thought that goes beyond the literal interpretation.
 The response may contain occasional errors in spelling, grammar, usage, and mechanics.
2  The student has a partial understanding of the question and uses some text evidence.
Needs  The response is an incomplete answer.
Improvement  The response is not organized. Uses vague or below level vocabulary.
(60-69)  The writing may contain extraneous information or misinterpretation.
 The lasting thought is not included or literal.
 The response is hard to read.
 The response has errors in spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation.
