Journal: The Way I See It

Think about what you know about how culture, society, and technology has affected art in the
past.

1. If you were a modern artist, what would your biggest influences be today? (2 points)

If I were a modern artist today, my biggest influences would be the rapid transformation of
the world as is happening now - comparison between the future, past, and depicting that.
Another influence would be the interconnection of cultures, and cultural art forms as well . I
am an American of Indian origin, and both cultures have different and beautiful aesthetics,
which in themselves are melting pots of other artistic styles. I would focus on this.

2. How might those influences affect your art? For example, would it affect which medium or
material you use? The subject matter you choose? The way you present or advertise it to the
public? Give this some thought before answering.

To depict the transformation of the world, I would create and show art in a form that connects
to people that are very disinterested in the modern world - like on a popular building or on
the internet. As times change, so should ways of presenting art. The materials I would use
would be a combination of different cultural tools - I am an American of Indian Origin, and
both cultures are different and beautiful fl aesthetic, which in themselves are melting pots of
different artistic styles. I would combine both artistic techniques , and make art pieces that
display and represent that. Finally, the subject matter would be something that is of value to
me - there are many issues in the modern world, that effect each of us differently - I would
choose topics such as lessons we can learn from history, philosophy, gender equality - things
that resonate with all people.

Be specific and give at least three possible answers. (6 points)

Final Project

Part of your coursework is a final project in which you will create your own work of art. This
work can be any medium, size, or style. Use your imagination! Throughout this course, you
will be exposed to many different artists and artworks, so be on the lookout for inspiration.

It's never too early to start planning your final project. In fact, your work starts right now.
Each journal will help you advance your ideas and work on the project. Start with the
questions below.

1. A medium is what something is made of: paint, photography, and clay are three common
mediums. What medium do you think you'd like to use for your piece? Why? List at least
three possible mediums and explain why they interest you. (6 points)

• Pencil: A simple black and white pencil drawing is plain, but can be
very detailed. it draws attention to the beauty of the subject, and can portray a
message very clearly. I appreciate the beauty in simplicity.

• Acyclic Paint and Black Pen (outline) : Especially in murals, and big
pieces, color can play a symbolic and aesthetic role in making the an art piece better. I
like pop-art murals that convey a message, and I feel acrylic paint is the medium to
make such a thing “pop”.

• Watercolor: I feel the depth and aesthetic that can be created with
watercolor, is the most beautiful out of all the artistic mediums when portraying a
landscape. It also has great versatility.

2. You will submit digital photos of your project to your teacher. If you do not have access to
a digital camera, you will need to borrow one. If you don't think you'll have access to a
camera by the time your project is due, tell your teacher now.

Will you have access to a digital camera? If not, what possible solutions can you think of to
submit your work to your teacher? (1 point)

I have access to a digital camera.
