LEARNING OBJECTIVE

We will learn factors affecting

gravity

We will learn about natural satellite

We will learn about artificial satellite

WARM-UP

Name the force that keeps the Earth and all planets to move
in their orbits around the sun.
LET’S RECALL

What is Gravity?

Gravity is the force which

attracts or pulls all objects
towards the center of the
Earth.
Factors on which Gravity
depends:

1. Size of the object

2. Distance between the

two objects
1. SIZE OF THE OBJECT

Gravity acts on every

object either it is big or
small

But objects that are big

have more gravity acting on
them.
GRAVITY ON DIFFERENT PLANETS

Which planet is exerting the

least amount of gravity?

Mercury, as the size of it is the

smallest among all the planets
shown in the picture
THINK AND TALK

Which planet is exerting the most gravity? Explain why?

Jupiter, it is the biggest in size among all the planets shown in the
picture
2. DISTANCE BETWEEN THE TWO OBJECTS
THINK AND TALK
Which model A or B will
have less gravity?
Explain why?

B: as the distance between

the two objects is more, the
gravity will be less.
GRAVITY BETWEEN MOON AND EARTH

Look at this model of the Moon

orbiting the Earth

The moon and the Earth are

attracted towards each other by
gravity

Earth exerts a greater force of

gravity on the Moon as Earth is
larger than the moon

THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST PAGE#110

The force of gravity depends on the mass of the object.

The Moon is smaller than Earth so the Moon’s gravity is less than
the Earth’s gravity.

A straight line.

➢ The diagram shows the relationship between the Earth and the Moon.
➢ It shows the Earth as bigger than the Moon.
➢ It shows the Moon’s orbit around the Earth.
➢ It shows the different forces of gravity with arrows.

This photograph shows a tropical cyclone near the coast of Australia.
Can you tell the device through which this photograph has been taken?
What is a Satellite?
In space, a body which orbit a larger body is called a satellite.
TYPES OF SATELLITES

NATURAL SATELLITES ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES

NATURAL SATELLITES

A natural satellite is any body in

space that orbits around a larger
body.
Moons are called natural satellites
because they orbit planets.
ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES

A satellite that is not a natural body

like the Moon but an object made
by humans that are send in the
space to gather information about
different planets.
USE OF ARTIFICIAL
SATELLITES

Take pictures which help to make

weather predictions
Provide TV signals and GPS used on
ships, aeroplane and cars
Gather information in space and use
their findings back on Earth.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL
SATELLITES
HOW DOES AN ARTIFICIAL SATELLITE GET
INTO THE SPACE

An artificial satellite is
launched into the space by
powerful rockets.

The satellite travels at an

enormous speed to
overcome the force of
gravity.
WRAP UP

What is an artificial satellite?

How does an artificial satellite keep in

orbit around Earth?

What is providing the power to keep the

artificial satellite moving?

The Earth is bigger than the Moon so it exerts

a larger force of gravity.

A natural satellite is a body in space that orbits a

larger body.

The Moon

An artificial satellite is also a body in space that

orbits a larger body, but it is made by people.

International Space Station, weather satellite,

communications satellite
PAGE#66

The Earth is bigger than the satellite. This means the

Earth exerts a greater force of gravity on the satellite
than the satellite exerts on the Earth.

An orbit around the Earth

The force of gravity of the Earth pulling on the

satellite (and it must maintain a constant speed).

It will be pulled back to Earth by the Earth’s gravity.
