You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete each of
the learning outcomes of the module. In each learning outcome there are information sheets
and activity sheets. Do this activity on your own and answer the Self Check at the end of each
learning activity.
If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask your teacher for assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You have already some basic knowledge and skills covered in this module. If you can
demonstrate competence to your teacher in a particular skill, talk to him/her so you do not
have to undergo the same training again. If you have a qualification or Certificate of
Competency from previous trainings show it to him/her. If the skills you required are
consistent with and relevant to this module, they become part of the evidence. You can
present these RPL. If you are not sure about your competence skills, discuss this with your
teacher.
After completing this module, ask your assessor to assess your competence. Result of
your assessment will be recorded in your competency profile. All the learning activities are
designed for you to complete at your own pace.
In this module, you will find the activities for you to accomplish and relevant

System Software (Operating System)
An operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer
hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer
programs. The operating system is a component of the system software in a computer
system. Application programs usually require an operating system to function.

Time-sharing operating systems schedule tasks for efficient use of the system
and may also include accounting software for cost allocation of processor time, mass
storage, printing, and other resources.

For hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the
operating system acts as an intermediary between programs and the computer
hardware, although the application code is usually executed directly by the hardware
and frequently makes system calls to an OS function or is interrupted by it. Operating
systems are found on many devices that contain a computer – from cellular
phones and video game consoles to web servers and supercomputers.

Examples of popular desktop operating systems include Apple OS X, Linux and

its variants, and Microsoft Windows. So-called mobile operating
systems include Android and IOS.

Types of Operating Systems

Single- and multi-tasking

A single-tasking system can only run one program at a time, while a multi-
tasking operating system allows more than one program to be running in concurrency.
This is achieved by time-sharing, dividing the available processor time between
multiple processes that are each interrupted repeatedly in time slices by a task-
scheduling subsystem of the operating system. Multi-tasking may be characterized in
pre-emptive and co-operative types. In pre-emptive multitasking, the operating system
slices the CPU time and dedicates a slot to each of the programs. Unix-like operating
systems, e.g., Solaris, Linux, as well as Amiga OS support pre-emptive multitasking.
Cooperative multitasking is achieved by relying on each process to provide time to the
other processes in a defined manner. 32-bit versions of Microsoft Windows used
cooperative multi-tasking. 64-bit versions of both Windows 7,8 and Windows10, used
pre-emptive multi-tasking.

Revision # 01
Single-user operating systems have no facilities to distinguish users, but may allow
multiple programs to run in tandem. A multi-user operating system extends the basic
concept of multi-tasking with facilities that identify processes and resources, such as
disk space, belonging to multiple users, and the system permits multiple users to
interact with the system at the same time. Time-sharing operating systems schedule
tasks for efficient use of the system and may also include accounting software for cost
allocation of processor time, mass storage, printing, and other resources to multiple
users.

Distributed

A distributed operating system manages a group of distinct computers and makes

them appear to be a single computer. The development of networked computers that
could be linked and communicate with each other gave rise to distributed computing.
Distributed computations are carried out on more than one machine. When computers
in a group work in cooperation, they form a distributed system.

Templated

In an OS, distributed and cloud computing context, templating refers to creating a

single virtual machine image as a guest operating system, then saving it as a tool for
multiple running virtual machines. The technique is used both in virtualization and
cloud computing management, and is common in large server warehouses.

Embedded

Embedded operating systems are designed to be used in embedded computer systems.

They are designed to operate on small machines like PDAs with less autonomy. They
are able to operate with a limited number of resources. They are very compact and
extremely efficient by design. Windows CE and Minix 3 are some examples of
embedded operating systems.

Real-time

A real-time operating system is an operating system that guarantees to process events

or data within a certain short amount of time. A real-time operating system may be
single- or multi-tasking, but when multitasking, it uses specialized scheduling
algorithms so that a deterministic nature of behaviour is achieved. An event-driven
system switches between tasks based on their priorities or external events while time-
sharing operating systems switch tasks based on clock interrupts.

Library
A library operating system is one in which the services that a typical operating system
provides, such as networking, are provided in the form of libraries. These libraries are
composed with the application and configuration code to construct uni-kernels –
which are specialized, single address space, machine images that can be deployed to
cloud or embedded environments.

Driver Installation(MOBO)
Every hardware component has a software driver associated with it. Windows 7 has
general purpose drivers built in that let most hardware components function to some
sufficient degree, although usually not efficiently and probably not completely. So far a
lot of hardware has been installed, but really nothing in the way of drivers. The next
thing to do is install the drivers.
A first way is to simply use the drivers that are provided on CD with the corresponding
hardware. So as much as possible, I prefer to go to the manufacturer's web-site to
retrieve the latest copy.

Insert the CD into the optical drive. The utility starts-up automatically and displays
the menu
shown below. Click on Install All Drivers.

Once the installation completes, restart the computer. To verify the driver is installed,
expand the Display Adapters entry in the Device Manager. Click on the display
adapter, and then click on the Driver tab.

Peripheral Device
A computer peripheral is a device that is connected to a computer but is not part of
the core computer architecture. The core elements of a computer are the central
processing unit, power supply, motherboard and the computer case that contains
those three components. Technically speaking, everything else is considered a
peripheral device. However, this is a somewhat narrow view, since various other
elements are required for a computer to actually function, such as a hard drive and
random-access memory (or RAM).
Most people use the term peripheral more loosely to refer to a device external to the
computer case. You connect the device to the computer to expand the functionality of
the system. For example, consider a printer. Once the printer is connected to a
computer, you can print out documents. Another way to look at peripheral devices is
that they are dependent on the computer system. For example, most printers can't do
much on their own, and they only become functional when connected to a computer
system.

Types of Peripheral Devices

There are many different peripheral devices, but they fall into three general categories:
1. Input devices, such as a mouse and a keyboard
2. Output devices, such as a monitor and a printer
3. Storage devices, such as a hard drive or flash drive

What is a Peripheral Driver?
A peripheral driver is an electronic circuit that contains a piece of software that
enables a computer to communicate with a peripheral device.

Types of Peripheral Drivers

There are several different kinds of peripheral drivers. At Future Electronics we stock
many of the most common types categorized by maximum output current, maximum

Application Software Defined
Application software is a defined subclass of computer software that employs the
capabilities of a computer directly to a task that the user wishes to perform.
Application software consists of programs that direct the computers to perform specific
information processing activities for end users. These programs are called application
packages because they direct the processing required for particular use, or
application, which users want to accomplish. Thousands of different jobs end users
want computers to do.

Kinds of Application Software

Application software includes variety of programs that can be subdivided into
general-purpose and application –special categories. Examples are; MS Office, Adobe
Reader, Win Rar, Microsoft access software, Adobe Photoshop, Sony Vegas Pro etc.

General purpose application software

Also referred to as generic programs, general-purpose software is designed for

the general use of ordinary computer users. The software is popular and is most
commonly used in schools, colleges, hospitals, businesses, industries and other
commercial centres.

Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access and Microsoft
Outlook are examples of general purpose software. One of the biggest advantages of
this type of software is that, unlike specialized software, it is cheap and easily
available from most local computer software shops.

Special Purpose Software

Special purpose software is limited to what i can do, but it handles a specific job better
as the software will be made to only handle that specific job, and that alone.
Eg. 'Windows Internet Explorer' or 'Safari' are web browsers and are designed to
handle web pages and view them, You wont be able to do other jobs like word process
with this type of program as it is classified as 'Special Purpose Software'.

C. Stress Test
Stress test is done to you computer to make sure its durability and reliability, on
there are many software that can conduct stress test to computer devices. Examples
are: SQLIO, CHKDSK,SMART Disk Check, Heavy Load, Sea Tools, Bart’s Stuff Test 5,
Memtest86 etc..

Hard Disk

Check your hard drive for the bad sector if they behave noisy or if sometimes cannot
be detected. A bad sector on a hard drive is simply a tiny cluster of storage space a
sector of the hard drive that appears to be defective. The sector won’t respond to read
or write requests.
Bad sectors can occur on both traditional magnetic hard drives and modern solid-
state drives. There are two types of bad sectors — one resulting from physical damage
that can’t be repaired, and one resulting from software errors that can be fixed.

Stress CPU

Use your processor or even a specific number of processor cores to full capacity.
HeavyLoad performs complex calculations to simulate the load on your processor.

Write Test File

Check how your system behaves when faced with dwindling disk space. HeavyLoad
writes a test file to your hard disk with variable speed. You can define the amount of
remaining disk space; once this limit is reached, HeavyLoad overwrites the file again
and again until more disk space is freed up.

Allocate Memory

You would like to test how well your computer works with scarce memory? HeavyLoad
can help: it reserves memory and even allows you to define how much memory should
be kept free and how fast the memory should be allocated.

5S and 3Rs according to Environmental Policies
5S

There are five 5S phases: They can be translated from the Japanese as "sort", "set in
order", "shine", "standardize", and "sustain". The list describes how to organize a work
space for efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used,
maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order. The decision-making
process usually comes from a dialogue about standardization, which builds
understanding among employees of how they should do the work.

3Rs
Reduce means reduce the waste we produce during our everyday activities, work,
studies and life in general.
Reuse means finding ways to reuse materials, toys, paper, electronics and any other
instruments or tools we use for our everyday life. Reusing means that
we will not need to buy a new one thus we will save energy producing a new
one and therefore reduce the pollution.
Recycle means that what it cannot be reused in its current form should be recycled so
that it can be used as raw material to produce something else that will be
useful for us. This way we save raw material, waste less and help our
environment.
