Input devices: An input device is hardware that allows a user to interact with a computer and also allows the

computer to collect data. The following table lists a number of input devices together with some of their uses
as well as their advantages and disadvantages:

INPUT USES OF INPUT DEVICE ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

Scanner • Scanning in paper documents • Converts written text into • Quality of photos and text

- temperature (greenhouse continuously (no vital monitoring/controlling
environment) readings would be missed) functions in an airplane)
- pressure (intruder alert system) • Possible to take readings • Most sensors are

Light pen • Selecting objects on a CRT • Have greater accuracy • Problems of 'lag· when
screen than touchscreens moving the pen on screen
• Used with CAD/CAM software on • Very small devices (useful (especially if the screen is
a CRT screen where space is an issue) not clean)
• Very easy input device to • Currently only work with
use CRT screens
• Very dated technology
