EQUIPMENT MISUSE HAZARD
Ge nera l S af et y
Any misuse of the equipment or accessories, such es over-
pressurizing, modifying parts, using incompatible chemicals
and fluids,or using worn or damaged parts, can cause them to
rupture and result in serious bodily injury, such as splashing
fluid in theeyes or on the skin, fire, explosion, or propew
damage.
NEVER alter or modify any part of thisequipment; doing so
could cause it to malfunction.
CHECK all equipment regularly and repair or replace worn or
damaged parts immediately.
ALWAYS read and follow the fluid and solvent
manufacturer's literature regarding the use of protective
clothing andequipment.
System Pressure
This pump can develop 16 bar (230 psi/ MAXIMUMWORK-
ING PRESSURE. at 12.4 bar (180 psi) MAXIMUM INCOM-
ING AIR PRESSURE. Be sure that all equipment and ac-
cessories are rated to withstand the maximum working
pressure of thispump. DO NOT exceedthe maximum working
pressure of any component or accessory used in thesystem.
FIRE OR EXPLOSION HAZARD
Static electricity is created by the flow of fluid throughthe
pump and hose. If w e f y part of theequipment is notproperly
grounded, sparking may occur, end the system may become
hazardous. Sparking may also occur when plugging in or
unplugging a power supply cord. Sparks can ignite fumes
from solvents and the fluidbeing dispensed, dust particlesand
other flammable substances, and can causefire or explosion
and serious bodily injuryand propew damage.
If you experience any static sparking or even e slight shock
while using this equipment, STOP SPRAYING IM-
MEDIATELY.-Check theentire systemfor proper grounding.
Do not use the s y a m again until theproblem has been iden-
tified and corrected.
1. Pump: use a ground wire and clamp as instructed to the
right.
2. Air Compressor: according to manufacturer's recommen-
dations.
3. Object being sprayed: according to local code.
4. Fluidsupply container: according to local code.
5. A llsolvent pails used when flushing, according to local
code. Use only metal pails, which are conductive. Do not
place the pail on a non-conductive surface, such as paper
or cardboard, which interrupts the grounding continuity.
6. To maintain grounding continuitywhen flushing orre/iev-
ing pressure, always hold a metal part of thevalve firmly to
the side of a grounded metal pail, then trigger the valve.
MOVING PARTS HAZARD
Moving parts can pinch or amputate your fingers or other
body parts. KEEP CLEAR of moving parts when starting or
operating the pump. Follow thePressure Relief Procedure
above to prevent the pump from starting
accidentally.

Fluid Compatibility
BE SURE that all fluids and solvents used erechemically com-
patible with the wettedparts shown in theTechnical Data on
the back cover. Always read the fluid and solvent manufac-
turer's literature beforeusing them in this pump.
Pressure Relief Procedure
To reduce the risk of serious bodily injury, including splashing
in theeyes or on the skin, or injury from moving parts, always
follow this procedure whenever you shut off the pump, when
checking or servicing any part of the system. when installing,
cleaning or changing nozzles, and wheneveryou stopdispens-
Ing.
1. Shut off the air to the pump.
2. Close the bleed-type master air valve (required in your
system).
3. Hold a metal partof the dispensing valvefirmly to the side
of a grounded metal pail, and actuate the valve to relieve
pressure.
4. Open the drain valve (required i?your system), having a
container ready to catch the dramage.
5. Leave the drain valve open until youare ready to dispense
again.
If you suspect that thenozzle or hose is completely clogged,
or thatpressure hasnot been fully relievedafter following the
steps above, VERY SLOWLY loosen the hose end coupling
and relieve pressure gradually,then loosen completely. Now
clear the nozzle or hose.
To ground the pump, loosen the grounding lug locknut (W)
and washer (X). Insert oneend of a12 ga (1.5 mm') minimum
ground wire (Y) into the slot in the lug (ZIand tighten the
locknut securely. See Fig 1. Connect the otherend of thewire
to a true earth ground. Refer to ACCESSORIES on page 30 to
order a ground wireand clamp.
Flushing Safety
To reduce the risk of injury from splashing or static sparking,
always hold a metal part of the dispensing valvefirmly to the
side of a grounded metal pail, and usethe lowestpossible fluid
pressure when flushing.

United States Government safety standards have been
adopted under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. These
standards-particularly the General Standards, Part1910, and
the ConstructionStandards, Pert 1926-should be consulted.

INSTALLATION
The Typical Installation shownabove is only a guide.
Contact your Graco representative for assistance in
designing a systemto meet your needs.
NOTE: Reference numbers and letters in the text
refer to the Typical Installation, Figs 1-9, and
to the Parts Lists on pages 13-28.
Mount the pumpto suit the typeof installation planned.
Graco mounting accessories are shown in the AC-
CESSORIES section on pages 29 and 30.
With 55 gallon
drum length pumps (except Models 226-949 and
226-950). screw the bung adapter ( 8 ) tightly into the
bung hole of the drum and adjust to hold the pump
12 mm (0.5 in.)off the bottom of the drum. Loosen the
vent plug (A) toprevent formationof a vacuum in the
drum. With Models 226-949 and 226-950 pumps, follow
the instructions on page 4 under Valve Kit Installation
before installing the pumpin the drum of tank. Stubby
pumps maybe mountedon thewall or to the side of the
drum with a clamp. See ACCESSORIES.
NOTE: Dimensions, air inlet andfluid outlet sizes are
given in the TECHNICAL DATA on the back
cover.
If low level cut-off valve 210-865(see ACCESSORIES) is
being used, install a drum-length pump (except Models
226-949, 226-950and 226-9511 in the container with the
intake valve 210-865 resting on the containerbottom.
This accessory valvewill not fitpumps with e telescop-
ing suction tube.
CAUTION
strap wrenchto avoid damaging the valve.Do not
use the legs of the valve to tighten it into the

System Accessories
Refer to the Typical Installation drawing and to AC-
CESSORIES on pages 29 and 30.
NOTE: To ensure maximum pump performance, be
sure that all accessories used are properly
sized to meet your system requirements.
Most models are supplied with a needle-type air control
valve (K) at the pump air inlet. Models 226-949.226-950.
and 226-951 are equipped with an air regulator kit K C )
instead. All models are supplied with an air line quick
disconnect coupler (L) toconnect the air line to the
pump and accessories.
The following paragraphs describe the orderof installa-
tion of air line accessories and supplied components.
Contact your Graco representative for assistance in
designing your system.
WARNING
Required in your system area bleed-type master
air valve ID) and a fluid drain valve (GI. These ac-
cessories help reducethe risk of serious bodily in-
jury including splashingin the eyes or onthe skin,
and injury from moving partsif you are adjusting
or repairing the pump.
The b/eed-type masterair valve relieves air trap-
ped between this valve and the pump after the
pump is shut off. Trapped air can causethe pump
to cycle unexpectedly and resultin serious bodily
injury, including amputation.
The fluid drain valve helps relieve pressurein the
displacement pump, hose, and dispensing valve
when shutting off the pump. Actuating the
dispensing valve to relieve pressure may not be
sufficient, especially if there is a clog in the hose
or the dispensing valve.

For automatic air motor lubrication, install an air line
lubricator (C) downstream from the air regulator (if sup-
plied) and all other accessories. Install a bleed-type
master air valve( D ) close to the pump. Next, install the
air regulator (CCI, if supplied. Installan air linefilter (E)
upstream from all other accessories, to remove harmful
dirt and moisture from the compressed air supply.
Using a suitable adapter, install the male disconnect pin
fitting (J)in the air filter inlet. Install theair line quick
disconnect coupler (L) on the air hose(F), but do not
connect it to the pin fitting yet.
Connect a grounded fluid hose (M)to the 314 npt(f)
fluid outlet.
Valve Kit Installation (Models226-949 and 226-950
only)
Using 'thread sealer on the male threads of the street
elbow (AA), screw it into the pumpfluid outlet (HI until
tight and the dispensing valve (BB) is in the position
shown in Fig 2.
Using moderate force only, extend the pump suction
tube, insert thepump into the drum or tank bung hole, MODEL
and screw the bung adapter (B) tightly into the bung
hole. Lift the pump about12 mm (0.5 in.) and tighten SHOWN

Flush Pump Before Using

Pumps aretested with lightweight oil, which is left in to
protect pump parts. To prevent contamination of the
fluid you are pumping, flushthe pump with a compatible
solvent before usingit.
To flush pump, connect shorthose to pump outlet, in-
sert pump intakeinto a pail of compatible solvent, direct
hoso into pail and start pump as explained below.

Allow pump to cycle slowlyfor at least 5 minutes, then Fig 3

stop and disconnect air hose. Push up on the ball of in-
take valve (N) todrain lower partof pump. See Fig 4.
Turn pumpover to drain upper pan of pump.
Starting end Operating Pump
With the air valve (K) or regulator (CC) closed, turn on
air supply and connect air line coupler(L). See Fig 2 or
3. Make sure all valves used in dispensing are open.

MAINTENANCE
Fill the wet-cup (P) 112 full of Graco Throat Seal Liquid
(TSL) or compatible solvent and keep it 112 full to keep
fluid from drying on the displacement rod and damaging
pump throat packings. See Fig 3.
Lubricate the throat packings frequently when you are
pumping a non-lubricating fluid, orare shutting down
for more than a few days. Some pumps have a grease
fitting (DD) for this purpose. See Fig 3.
The accessory air line lubricator(C) shown on page 30
provides automatic air motor lubrication. Install the
lubricator downstream from all other accessories. To
manually lubricatethe motor, disconnect the air lineat
the air motor inlet, put about 15 drops of lightweight oil
in the inlet, reconnectthe air line andturn on the air to
blow oil into themotor.
Never allow the pump to run dry offluid being pumped.
A dry pump will quickly accelerate to a high speed;
possibly damaging itself. If your pump accelerates
quickly, or is running too fast, stop it immediately and
check the fluid supply. If the supply containeris empty
and air has been pumpedinto lines, prime pump and
lines with fluid, or flush and leave filled with compatible
solvent. Be sure to eliminate all air from fluid system.
To shut down, disconnect
the air line coupler(L). Follow
the Pressure Relief Procedure Warning above
whenever you stop pumping.
Periodically, checkthe tightness ofthe packing nut (P).
Nut should be tight enough to prevent leakage: no
tighter. See Fig 3.

Before You Start
1. When replacing the packings, replace the glands
also. Lubricate the packings before installing them.

2. Be sure you have all the necessary repair parts on

hand to reduce downtime.
3. Repair kits 213-012 (Leather), 215-964
(Polyethylene) and 112 (Rubber) and conver-
sion kit 213-013 (PTFE re available. For best
results, use all the NEW parts in the kit even if the
old ones look good.

4. Flush the pump. Follow thePressure Relief Pro-

cedure Warning on page 6. Remove the pump
from its mounting.
Disconnecting the Air Motor
Unscrew the tie rod locknuts (T), remove the
clip pin (Q)
and headed pin (2).Raise the air motor away from the
pump. Unscrew the displacementrod (R) from the air
motor connectingrod (S). Refer to manual 307-456 for
air motor service and parts information.
Reconnecting the Air Motor
When reconnecting the air motor, use lithium base
grease on the threadsof the displacement rod(R). Insert
the muffler (Y) into the air motor connecting rod (S) as
shown in Fig 5. Tighten the displacement rodinto the air
motor connectingrod hand tight, and install pin (Z).
Ap-
ply pipe sealant to the threadsof the tie rod. To ensure
proper alignment,first thread the tie rod locknuts loose-
ly onto the tie rods, then torque evenlyto 15 N.m (8 ft-
Ib).
NOTE: Removing the muffler(Y) will increase both
pump flow rate and exhaust noise.

Throat Packing8
Remove the cylinder (€E) and piston as explained
previously. Remove the packing nut (P) and pull the
displacement rod (R) out the top of the outlet housing
(0). Inspect the outer surfaceof the displacement rod
for scoring or wear by runninga finger over the surface
or holding it up to the light at an angle.
NOTE: There aretwo throat packing configurations,
depending on the displacement pump model.
Both configurations are covered in the
following text, and are pictured in Figs 6-9.
NOTE: On displacement pumps 215-953 end
215-956, install the N o leather v-packings
below the singlePTFE v-packing.
Leave the packing nut (P) loose until the displacement
rod (R) has been installed.
CAUTION
Insert displacement rodfrom the top of the outlet
housing to prevent sheering of packings.
