Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Humans are social creatures, and for centuries, science has proved that social connections are vital for
both our emotional and physical well-being. However, alone time also plays an essential role in mental health.
Alone time can give you the time and freedom to truly explore your own passion without any outside
interference. It can be a way to do things like try new hobbies, research topics that fascinate you, or learn a
new skill – without the pressures and judgments of others. Instead of worrying about the needs, interests, and
opinions that others may have, alone time lets you focus on yourself, thereby promoting personal
development.
Spending time for yourself is also an opportunity to strengthen your creativity. Without the need to
care for or interact with other people, you can ignore outside influences and let your mind wander without
restrictions or limits. Research actually suggests that being alone can lead to changes in the brain that help fuel
the creative process. One study found that people who tend to purposely withdraw in order to spend time
alone also tend to be more creative than others.
Living alone tends to be seen in a negative light. However, researchers have found that people who live
alone may actually have richer social lives and more social energy than people who are always with others. In
his book “Going Solo,” sociologist Eric Klineberg notes that one in seven U.S. adults lives alone and found that
not only do these adults not feel lonely, many actually had richer social lives.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
When you work with a team, the best way to grow is to get and learn from feedback. Constructive
feedback is a better teacher than any book, training, or speech. Taking steps to get better at receiving feedback
will help you develop as team member, a team leader, and as a person.
The very first response to give when someone gives you feedback should be gratitude. Don’t get
defensive. Don’t try to explain what they might not understand. Instead, take time to offer your thanks for the
gift you just received – the gift of feedback. Why should you do this? Because while feedback is always a gift,
it’s also a risk. When someone raises their voice to offer you their feedback, especially critical feedback, they are
risking potential damage to the relationship or risking wasting their time on someone who will not accept it.
Starting with “thank you” lets the other person know that risk was worth it and you will listen.
Whether it’s praise, criticism or some other type of feedback, take the time to restate to the person
giving it what you heard them say. Just a quick “So what I think you are saying is…” can have a powerful effect
on your conversation. Restating the feedback does two things. First, it checks your own understanding of the
message, so you don’t risk taking in the wrong lessons. But more importantly, it allows the other person to feel
heard. It lets them know you were really listening and that that their opinion, whether true and sensible or not,
carries weight. This makes it more likely you’ll get more helpful feedback from this person in the future.
Getting feedback is not a one-time experience. If you want to keep on growing, changing and
improving, make sure you’re developing a habit of seeking out more feedback. For example, you can tell the
person giving you feedback about what you are going to change and ask if you can set a date with that person
to re-evaluate how the change is going. This will not only guarantee more feedback later, but is also indicative
of your willingness to receive it, which will encourage others to give you feedback without you having to ask
for it.
