Week One Introduction

It’s BOOM time for fashion illustration.

This tutorial is an introduction to Fashion Illustration

to get INSPIRED. To start thinking about the form of
illustration you would like to develop.

What kind of Illustrations are you interested in

005

Fashion Design Illustration

Due to the preference of photography over illustrations for fashion editorial from the
1930’ s onwards, Fashion illustration became an endangered medium, declining
steadily until the 1990’ s. As publications such as Wallpaper pioneered the return of
medium in the 90’ s, other mainstream magazines and outlets began also to join the
tide of interest. Today the field is burgeoning, with illustrators employed in a myriad
of o rganizations, working in groundbreaking ways and enjoying careers that cross
borders between design, fashion and art.

Laird Borelli, author of Fashion

Illustration Now (2001) states:

Photographs, no matter how altered or

Fashion Design Illustration

Fashion Design Illustration

retouched, will always have some

association with reality and by
association truth. I like to think of
fashion Illustrations as prose poems and
having more fictional narratives. They
are more obviously filtered through an
individual vision than photos.

Week One Jack Hughes

Jack Hughes

The graphic illustrations of Jack

Hughes are refreshing and unique
amidst many of the artists
struggling to imitate fashion’s
greatest illustrators. In his use of two
tone colour and realistic rendering,

Fashion Design Illustration

Hughes creates bold and elegant

characters with a hint of nostalgia.

Fashion Design Illustration

Fashion Design Illustration

is appropriate for the development of a collection (Assessment 2). Avoid vague themes that will
not translate to garment design. Remember that the concept you choose now will form the
inspiration for your garments and will be used all semester.

Submssion:
Assessment is due on the day of class in week 3 by 8pm.

Your submission must be A3 PDF document format uploaded to blackboard.

*Word & Powerpoint documents will not be accepted.

0041
Week One Assessment One

Fashion Design Illustration

Fashion Design Illustration

1. Research & annotations

2. Your visual diary
3. Your A3 concept board
4. An inclass presentation
5. A 1-page rationale.

0042
Week One Assessment One

You don’t have to decide the exact concept straight away!

Although – this is due in week 3 and you will be presenting your ideas to the rest of class.

Start collecting and writing down your key words, people, style destinations etc By next week
you should bring in lots of loose items to play with and explore, bring in magazines to cut up

Fashion Design Illustration

Fashion Design Illustration

or things you have ripped out of magazines.

To get an idea, I want to have a bit of a class discussion later on who you are, what your
interests are and where you are leaning with your conceptual ideas. This doesn’t have to be
cast in stone at this stage, but it will help us facilitate a conversation where we can start to see
where individuals ideas are directed so that we can all help each other.

As you are searching for images – you might find something that you know another student
would like – this is what being part of a creative learning community is all about – so be
generous with your help and ideas.
