Centroid and Moment of Inertia Basics

The document discusses centroids, which represent the middle of geometric shapes. It defines Varignon's theorem for the moment of forces and describes calculating centroids of composite areas and structural sections. Methods are provided for finding the moment of inertia of common shapes and structural sections.

CENTROID

Centroids are properties of pure shapes, not physical

objects. They represent the coordinates of the
“middle” of the shape.
CENTROID OF COMMON GEOMETRIC SHAPES
VARIGNON’S THEOREM:
- states that the moment of any force is equal to the algebraic sum
of the moments of the
∑∑
components of that force.

∑𝑨𝑹𝑬𝑨𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 x̄ = ∑ AREA(x)

∑𝑨𝑹𝑬𝑨𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 ȳ = ∑ AREA(y)
CENTROID OF A COMPOSITE AREAS
Using the method of composite areas, determine the location of the centroid from x and y axis of the shaded area
shown.

∑𝑨𝑹𝑬𝑨𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 x̄ = ∑ AREA(x)

∑𝑨𝑹𝑬𝑨𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 ȳ = ∑ AREA(y)
CENTROID OF STRUCTURAL SECTIONS
- Structural sections are sections used for light to heavy construction purposes. Example of
these are angles, channels, wide flanges, squares, I or S shapes, etc.
CENTROID OF STRUCTURAL SECTIONS
Determine the location y of the centroid C of the beam having the cross-sectional area shown.
MOMENT OF
INERTIA
Geometric property of the cross-section of a beam.
“The bendiness of the beam”
MOMENT OF INERTIA OF A COMMON GEOMETRIC SHAPES
MOMENT OF INERTIA OF A STRUCTURAL SECTIONS
A simple beam has a span of 10 m and supports a total uniformly distributed load of 12 kN/m.
Determine the moment of inertia with respect to its centroidal x-axis.

Properties of W 480 x 86:

A = 10800 mm²
bf =180 mm
tf = 15 mm
tw = 12 mm
d = 480 mm
Determine the moment of inertia of the cross-sectional area of the T-beam with respect to its
centroidal x-axis.
