Differences
Teaching Points
1. The HF communication antenna receives and transmits RF signals.
Student Notes
The HF antenna transmits and receives Radio Frequency (RF) signals in the
HF frequency range.
The HF antenna is part of the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer. It has a
fiberglass-aluminum bonded leading edge surface. A fluoroelastomeric anti-
static coating helps prevent wind erosion and decreases static noise.

Teaching Points
1. The HF antenna fitted to the 787-9 has been relocated when compared to
the 787-8.
- It is below the dorsal fairing at the base of the vertical stabilizer.
Student Notes
The HF antenna on the 787-9 is below the vertical stabilizer dorsal fairing (at
the base of the vertical stabilizer).
Feed lines connect between the lower end of the antenna and the
two couplers.
The upper end of the antenna attaches to the dorsal fairing with four grounding
straps.
The reason for the change in HF antenna and coupler position between the
787-8 and the 787-9 versions was to accommodate the ducts for the
Empennage Door Actuation System (EDAS).
