VHF System
VHF SYSTEM
There are three VHF systems installed.
The VHF system operates from 118 MHz to 136.990 MHz.
A VHF system consists of a:
- VHF antenna which radiates and receives rf signals in the VHF range.
- VHF transceiver which is an AM receiver/transmitter.
- Radio communications panel (RCP) which sends tuning information
to the transceiver.
The audio control panels (ACPs) are used for:
- Transmitter selection
- Receiver selection
- Volume control
The audio management unit (AMU) sends the mic input and PTT
discrete to the selected VHF transceiver. It also sends the receiver
audio from the selected VHF transceiver to the flight deck headsets and
speakers. The SELCAL decoder monitors the received audio. It alerts
the flight crew when the correct SELCAL code is received.
A transceiver PTT is sent to the digital flight data acquisition card
(DFDAC) so the flight recorder can record the PTT discrete and to the
FMCs to detect crew activity.
The ACARS interface with the center VHF transceiver provides for voice
and data communications.
The central maintenance computer system (CMCS) interfaces with the
VHF transceiver and the radio communication panel. The CMCS is used
to test and monitor the VHF system. 23.12.0702 -001

VHF - TUNING
General Description
The VHF transceivers get tuning data from three identical radio
communication panels (RCPs). Any RCP can tune any communication
radio.
Each RCP monitors tuning frequency information from the other RCPs.
All three RCPs keep the same tuning frequency information for each of
the communication radios. New tuning information from any RCP
updates the tuning information in all the RCPs.
The tuning information is sent to the VHF transceivers and RCPs
through an ARINC 429 bus.

VHF - RECEIVE/TRANSMIT
General Description
The radio communication panels (RCPs) control the frequency selection
of the transceivers.
The audio control panels (ACPs) send transmit selection, receive
selection and volume control information to the audio management unit
(AMU).
Signal Flow
During transmission, mic audio and PTT signals are sent through the
AMU to the selected transceivers. The transceiver changes the mic
audio to a rf signal and sends it to the antenna. The antenna radiates
the rf signal. Audio sidetone is sent to the AMU from the transceiver as
receiver audio. The sidetone is used to monitor transmission.
During reception, the antenna receives rf signals and sends them to the
transceiver. The rf signal is changed in the transceiver to an audio signal
and sent to the AMU. The AMU sends the audio to the crew stations
selected to that receiver.System Interfaces
The SELCAL decoder monitors all the VHF transceivers. It alerts the
flight crew when the correct SELCAL code is received.
ACARS uses the center VHF transceiver for voice and data two-way
communication.
A transceiver PTT is sent to the digital flight data aquisition card
(DFDAC) so the flight recorder can record the PTT and to the FMCs to
detect crew activity. 23.12.0708 -001

HF System
General
The HF communication systems uses two HF systems. Each system
has these components:
- A common HF antenna. The antenna transmits and receives RF
signals in the HF range
- An HF antenna coupler. The antenna coupler matches the impedance
of the antenna and transmission line to the output of the transceiver
at the selected frequency.
- An HF communication transceiver. The transceiver operates in the
AM or upper side band (USB) mode.
The HF communication system interfaces with:
- The radio communication panels (RCPs). The RCPs send tuning data
and mode information to the HF transceiver.
- The audio management unit (AMU). Microphone audio and PTT
discretes are sent to the transceiver through the AMU. Receiver audio
is sent from the transceiver to the speakers and headsets through the
AMU.
- The SELCAL decoder. The selcal decoder initiates an alert when a
call is received for that airplane.
- The FMCs receives the microphone PTT signal for crew activity
detection.
- The digital flight data acquisition card (DFDAC) in the MAWEA. It
receives the microphone PTT signal for input to the flight recorder.
- The central maintenance computer system (CMCS) interfaces with
the HF transceiver and the radio communication panels to monitor HF
system faults.
- The air/ground relay. The transceiver uses air/ground logic to define

HF - TUNING INTERFACE
General
The HF communication system uses data buses to share tuning
information between the:
- Radio communication panels (RCPs)
- HF communication transceivers
Tuning Buses
The RCPs send tuning data to the HF communication transceivers. Any
RCP can tune any transceiver.
Each RCP has two ARINC 429 output buses:
- Tuning bus
- Crosstalk bus.
Both the left and right RCPs send tuning data to both HF communication
transceivers.
The center RCP sends its tuning bus output to the left and right RCPs in
case of RCP failures.Port Select Discrete
Each HF communication transceiver has two tuning data input ports,
port A and B. The transceiver uses the port select discrete to select its
input port. A grounded port select disrete causes the transceiver to use
port A. An open port select discrete causes the transceiver to use port B.
The port select discrete for the left HF communication transceiver
comes from the left RCP. The port seelct discrete for the right HF
transceiver comes from the right RCP.
Crosstalk Buses
Each RCP sends tuning data to the other RCPs on crosstalk buses.
Synchronized tuning data allows any RCP to tune any transceiver. 23.11.0707 -001

Typically a user logs onto a GES at the beginning of each flight. Log-ons

Selcal
General
Each airplane has a different SELCAL code. A ground station transmits
this code with a signal to contact an airplane. When the airplane
receives its SELCAL code, several flight deck indications come on to
alert the flight crew.
SELCAL Decoder
A SELCAL coding is in the wire integration unit (WIU) and gives each
airplane its SELCAL code.
The SELCAL decoder monitors for audio tones. If the tones are the
same as the code, the decoder sends a signal to the audio management
unit (AMU).
Indications
The modularized aural warning electronics assembly (MAWEA) makes
a chime signal and sends it to the aural warning speakers.
The AMU sends a signal to the audio control panels (ACPs). The ACPs
turn on the call light for the transceiver that received the SELCAL code.
To reset the indications, push the CALL light on the ACP or push the mic
switch for the related radio.

Audio
The selcal decoder gets audio from the VHF and HF transceivers.
Discretes
The selcal decoder sends a call set discrete for each of the five
communications radios to the audio management unit (AMU). The AMU
sends a call reset discrete to the selcal decoder for each radio.
The selcal decoder sends a chime request discrete to the modularized
avionics and warning electronics assembly (MAWEA).
A set of 16 program pins puts the airplane code into the selcal decoder.
Flight Interphone
The AMU sends call set data to each audio control panel (ACP) on a
digital bus. The ACPs send call reset data to the AMU on the same bus.
There are PTT inputs to the AMU from each ACP and from each crew
member's hand mic. A PTT can reset a selcal call.

General
The ACARS MU has BITE which runs continuously to detect internal
failures. The MU sends the fault status to the central maintenance
computers (CMCs).
Test
The ACARS MU BITE detects faults as they occur. If a fault is detected,
the appropriate front panel LED status annunciator will come on. There
are two LED status annunciators:
- MU FAIL; The ACARS MU has detected an internal fault.
- CU FAIL; The ACARS MU has detected a fault in the control display
unit (CDU) interface.

ELT
COMPONENT DETAILS
Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT)
The ELT rests in a mounting tray that is installed to the fuselage of the
airplane. An end cap with two thumb-screws attaches the ELT to the
mounting tray.
The ELT consists of a these components:
The ELT contains a non-rechargeable battery pack assembly for its
power. The battery pack is replaced as a unit.
A printed circuit assembly (PCA) which contains all the electronics and
the "G"-switch (gravity switch). The "G"-switch activates under high
gravitational force such as experienced in a crash.
The "G"-switch is only enabled when the ELT is installed in its mounting
tray. When the ELT is removed from the tray, it is safe from accidental
activation if it is dropped or during shipping, assuming the ON/OFF
switch remains OFF.
A plastic shield between the PCA and the battery pack protects the
electronics from possible battery leakage.
An end cap contains the coaxial connectors for the antenna, a Molex
connector for interface to the control panel, and an ON/OFF switch.

OPERATION
Functional Description
(1) The ELT has a non-rechargeable battery pack as its power supply.
(2) When properly installed on the airplane, the ELT will start
automatically in a crash. It can also be operated by setting the switch on
the ELT to "ON" or the remote switch on the ELT control panel to "ON"
For normal operation, the switch on the ELT is set to "OFF" and the
switch on the control panel is set to "ARMED". The ELT light will be off.
CONTROL
(1) For normal operation, set the switch on the ELT to "OFF" and the
control panel switch to "ARMED".
(2) When testing the ELT, set the switch on the control panel to "ON"
and monitor 121.5 MHz on a VHF radio. Do not keep this switch in the
"ON" position for more than 15 seconds at a time. This will prevent
emergency search operations that are not necessary.
(3) If the ELT is accidentally activated, reset it by setting the local switch
to "ON" and immediately back to "OFF", or by setting the remote switch
momentarily to "RESET" and allowing it to return to the "ARMED"
position.

Voice Recorder
General Description
The voice recorder system gets power when any of the following is true:
- Any engine is in run.
- It is less than five minutes after the last engine shuts down.
- The voice recorder switch is in the ON position.
Operation
When any engine fuel cutoff switch is in the RUN position, it sends a
ground discrete to the voice recorder engine cutoff relay. This turns on
the voice recorder. When the last engine shuts down, the discrete to the
voice recorder engine cutoff relay goes to an open condition. A circuit in
the relay makes the relay stay on for 5 minutes after the discrete goes
to an open condition. Thus, this relay sends power to the voice recorder
whenever any engine is running and for 5 minutes after all engines shut
down.
When all engines are off, the fuel cutoff relays for the four engines send
a ground discrete to the voice recorder switch. When this discrete is a
ground, and when a person puts the voice recorder switch into the ON
position, the voice recorder switch stays in the ON position. The
solenoid-held voice recorder switch sends 115v ac from ac bus 1 to the
voice recorder when the switch is on.
When any engine is running, the switch does not stay in the ON position,
because the discrete to the switch is open.
When the cockpit voice recorder gets 115v ac, it supplies:
- 18v dc to the audio amplifier in the control panel.
- 30v dc, routed externally, to its own bias generator.
