VHF SYSTEM
There are three VHF systems installed.
The VHF system operates from 118 MHz to 136.990 MHz.
A VHF system consists of a:
- VHF antenna which radiates and receives rf signals in the VHF range.
- VHF transceiver which is an AM receiver/transmitter.
- Radio communications panel (RCP) which sends tuning information
to the transceiver.
The audio control panels (ACPs) are used for:
- Transmitter selection
- Receiver selection
- Volume control
The audio management unit (AMU) sends the mic input and PTT
discrete to the selected VHF transceiver. It also sends the receiver
audio from the selected VHF transceiver to the flight deck headsets and
speakers. The SELCAL decoder monitors the received audio. It alerts
the flight crew when the correct SELCAL code is received.
A transceiver PTT is sent to the digital flight data acquisition card
(DFDAC) so the flight recorder can record the PTT discrete and to the
FMCs to detect crew activity.
The ACARS interface with the center VHF transceiver provides for voice
and data communications.
The central maintenance computer system (CMCS) interfaces with the
VHF transceiver and the radio communication panel. The CMCS is used
to test and monitor the VHF system. 23.12.0702 -001

VHF - TOWING POWER

The left VHF transceiver and radio communication panel (RCP) are
supplied with power by:
- The 28v dc APU battery, or
- The 28v dc ground handling bus (GHB)
When the standby switch is off, and the towing power backup switch is
in the ENABLE position, a ground discrete is sent to relays R8352 and
R8353. Relays R8352 and R8353 then energize if the ground handling
bus is supplied with power. When the two relays are energized, the
TOWING DC DISTRIBUTION - B circuit breaker supplies power to the
left RCP and left VHF transceiver through the TOWING GHB VHF - L
circuit breaker.
This function is used when the airplane is connected to towing power.

VHF - TUNING

General Description
The VHF transceivers get tuning data from three identical radio
communication panels (RCPs). Any RCP can tune any communication
radio.
Each RCP monitors tuning frequency information from the other RCPs.
All three RCPs keep the same tuning frequency information for each of
the communication radios. New tuning information from any RCP
updates the tuning information in all the RCPs.
The tuning information is sent to the VHF transceivers and RCPs
through an ARINC 429 bus.

Port Select Discrete

Each of the VHF transceivers has two tuning frequency input ports (port
A and port B). The transceiver uses the port select discrete to determine
which tuning input port is active. The normal active port is port A. Port A
is used when the port select discrete input is grounded. Port B is used
when the port select discrete is open. The port select discrete for the left
transceiver connects to the left RCP. The port select discrete for the
right transceiver connects to the right RCP. The port select discrete for
the center transceiver connects to ACARS.
When ACARS is in use, it outputs a ground port select discrete and
tunes the center VHF transceiver. The RCPs use the ACARS port select
output to know when ACARS is in control of the center VHF transceiver.

Emergency Frequency Monitoring

When the RCPs are tuned to 121.5 Mhz, the emergency frequency
monitoring discrete goes to the audio management unit (AMU). 23.12.0707 -001

VHF - RECEIVE/TRANSMIT

General Description
The radio communication panels (RCPs) control the frequency selection
of the transceivers.
The audio control panels (ACPs) send transmit selection, receive
selection and volume control information to the audio management unit
(AMU).

Signal Flow
During transmission, mic audio and PTT signals are sent through the
AMU to the selected transceivers. The transceiver changes the mic
audio to a rf signal and sends it to the antenna. The antenna radiates
the rf signal. Audio sidetone is sent to the AMU from the transceiver as
receiver audio. The sidetone is used to monitor transmission.
During reception, the antenna receives rf signals and sends them to the
transceiver. The rf signal is changed in the transceiver to an audio signal
and sent to the AMU. The AMU sends the audio to the crew stations
selected to that receiver.System Interfaces
The SELCAL decoder monitors all the VHF transceivers. It alerts the
flight crew when the correct SELCAL code is received.
ACARS uses the center VHF transceiver for voice and data two-way
communication.
A transceiver PTT is sent to the digital flight data aquisition card
(DFDAC) so the flight recorder can record the PTT and to the FMCs to
detect crew activity. 23.12.0708 -001

VHF - CMC INTERFACES

The radio communication panels (RCPs) send a discrete to the central
maintenance computers (CMCs). The CMCs monitor the discrete to
determine if an internal failure exists.
The VHF tranceivers send continuous maintenance data to the CMCs.
The left CMC sends test commands to the VHF transceivers through
ARINC 429 buses. If the left CMC fails, the right CMC sends test
commands to the VHF transceivers through internal switching in the left
CMC. The left, right and center VHF transceivers send ground test data
to both CMCs over an ARINC 429 bus.
Three control display units (CDUs) are used for control of the CMCs.
The ground test enable relay number 6 inhibits a ground test. 23.12.0709 -001

HF - COMMUNICATION SYSTEM - INTRODUCTION

General
The high frequency (HF) communication system permits voice
communication over greater distances than line-of-sight radio systems.
The HF system is for communication with ground stations or with other
airplanes during long over-water flights. The HF system operates in the
HF aeronautical communication band between 2.000 MHz and 29.999
MHz.

Long Range Communication

The HF system uses sky waves for long range communication. The HF
is signals pass into the ionized layers of the atmosphere. The ionized
layers refract the signals toward the earth. the earth reflects the signals
back toward the ionized layers. Sky wave distances depend upon
frequency, time of day and airplane altitude. Skips are the areas
between sky waves reflections.

Short Range Communication

HF signals also go directly to ground stations and other airplanes. 23.11.0701 -001

HF - SYSTEM 23.11.0702 -001

General
The HF communication systems uses two HF systems. Each system
has these components:
- A common HF antenna. The antenna transmits and receives RF
signals in the HF range
- An HF antenna coupler. The antenna coupler matches the impedance
of the antenna and transmission line to the output of the transceiver
at the selected frequency.
- An HF communication transceiver. The transceiver operates in the
AM or upper side band (USB) mode.
The HF communication system interfaces with:
- The radio communication panels (RCPs). The RCPs send tuning data
and mode information to the HF transceiver.
- The audio management unit (AMU). Microphone audio and PTT
discretes are sent to the transceiver through the AMU. Receiver audio
is sent from the transceiver to the speakers and headsets through the
AMU.
- The SELCAL decoder. The selcal decoder initiates an alert when a
call is received for that airplane.
- The FMCs receives the microphone PTT signal for crew activity
detection.
- The digital flight data acquisition card (DFDAC) in the MAWEA. It
receives the microphone PTT signal for input to the flight recorder.
- The central maintenance computer system (CMCS) interfaces with
the HF transceiver and the radio communication panels to monitor HF
system faults.
- The air/ground relay. The transceiver uses air/ground logic to define

HF - TUNING INTERFACE

General
The HF communication system uses data buses to share tuning
information between the:
- Radio communication panels (RCPs)
- HF communication transceivers

Tuning Buses
The RCPs send tuning data to the HF communication transceivers. Any
RCP can tune any transceiver.
Each RCP has two ARINC 429 output buses:
- Tuning bus
- Crosstalk bus.
Both the left and right RCPs send tuning data to both HF communication
transceivers.
The center RCP sends its tuning bus output to the left and right RCPs in
case of RCP failures.Port Select Discrete
Each HF communication transceiver has two tuning data input ports,
port A and B. The transceiver uses the port select discrete to select its
input port. A grounded port select disrete causes the transceiver to use
port A. An open port select discrete causes the transceiver to use port B.
The port select discrete for the left HF communication transceiver
comes from the left RCP. The port seelct discrete for the right HF
transceiver comes from the right RCP.

Crosstalk Buses
Each RCP sends tuning data to the other RCPs on crosstalk buses.
Synchronized tuning data allows any RCP to tune any transceiver. 23.11.0707 -001

HF - RECEIVE/TRANSMIT

Signal Flow - Transmission

Mic audio and PTT signals are sent to the transceiver through the Audio
Management Unit (AMU). The transceiver changes the mic audio to an
RF signal and sends it to the coupler when there is a key interlock
discrete from the coupler. The coupler tunes itself to match the
impedance of the transmitter to the antenna at the selected transmit
frequency. During the tune mode, the coupler sends a tune-in-progress
discrete to the transceiver. The output of the coupler goes to the
antenna. The RF signal radiates into the air from the antenna. Audio
sidetone goes back to the AMU from the transceiver as receiver audio.
The left and right HF systems share a common antenna. During
transmission, a discrete goes from the active coupler to disable the
other coupler.

Signal Flow - Reception

The RF signals received by the antenna are sent through the coupler to
the transceiver. The transceiver changes the RF signals to audio. The
audio goes to the AMU.

System Interfaces
Select transmitter, receiver audio and audio level from the audio control
panels (ACP's).
The SELCAL decoder monitors all received audio. It alerts the flight
crew when it detects a call to the airplane.
The digital flight data acquisition card (DFDAC) monitors the PTT signal
for the flight recorder.
The FMCs monitors the PTT for crew activity.
The transceivers send the PTT signal to the airplane condition
monitoring system (ACMS). 23.11.0708 -004

HF transceivers send real-time fault status to the CMCs. The HF
transceivers also send ground test data to the CMCs over ARINC 429
data buses. The left CMC sends ground test commands to the HF
transceivers over separate ARINC 429 data buses.

SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM - INTRODUCTION

The satellite communications (SATCOM) system is a long range data
and voice communications system. SATCOM is much less susceptible
to atmospheric interference than VHF communications systems.
SATCOM uses satellites in geosynchronous orbit as relay stations
between the airplane earth stations (AES) and ground earth stations
(GES). The GES use telephone lines or microwave links to complete the
communication link between the airplane and the selected GES. 23.25.0501 -001

SATCOM - SYSTEM NETWORK correction necessary to prevent doppler induced errors. Once locked
onto a satellite, the AES logs-on with a GES. Log-on information is
General shared throughout the network, so any of the ground stations can
communicate with the AES. 23.25.0522 -001

SATCOM is a long range data and voice communications system. It

uses a network of satellites and ground stations. The SATCOM network
is made up of three segments. They are the:
- Satellites
- Aircraft earth stations (AES)
- Ground earth stations (GES)
The satellites are in geo-synchronous orbits and are the two-way relay
between the AES and GES. Uplink signals are sent to the satellite and
downlink signals are sent from the satellite.
The satellite is transparent to the users. It converts C-Band frequency
signals from the GES to L-Band frequency signals and relays them to
the AES.
The AES equipment processes signals in the L-band frequencies from
1530 MHz to 1660.5 MHz.
The GES synchronizes the SATCOM system and coodinates
transmissions. The GES transmits and receives on C-band frequencies
from 4 GHz to 6 GHz. The network allows the AES to communicate with
any other user on the network.

Operation
Typically a user logs onto a GES at the beginning of each flight. Log-ons
may be renewed during flight if a substantial interruption of
communications has occurred. New log-ons are also needed when a
satellite or GES hands off the AES to another station. An AES may only
log-on to one GES at a time, but may establish separate links for other
communication.
When first powered the AES scans a stored set of frequencies from
1530 MHz to 1559 MHz to locate and lock on to a satellite. The AES
measures the doppler shift of the GES signal and calculates the error

Transmit Operation
During transmit the SDU:
- Gets voice signals from the flight interphone system or data from
ACARS or CMCS.
- Digitizes voice and data signals.
- Converts the digital voice and data signals to RF signals and sends
the RF signals to the RFU.
- Gets navigation data from the IRUs.

SATCOM - FLIGHT DECK EFFECTS AND CMCS MESSAGES

Flight Deck Effects

There are no maintenance related flight deck effects for the SATCOM
system.

LRU Internal Fault Messages

When an LRU detects internal faults and reports them directly to the
central maintenance computer system (CMCS).

LRU Faults Reported by Other LRUs

When an LRU reports another component's status or when an LRU that
monitors other components detects and reports a fault or condition of
those components to the CMCS or EIUs.

Interface Fault Messages

The CMCS has logic to monitor the combination of interface faults
reported to the CMCS. This logic determines the message that shows.

SELCAL - GENERAL DESCRIPTION

General
Each airplane has a different SELCAL code. A ground station transmits
this code with a signal to contact an airplane. When the airplane
receives its SELCAL code, several flight deck indications come on to
alert the flight crew.

HF and VHF Transceivers

The HF and VHF communication transceivers send received audio to
the SELCAL decoder.

SELCAL Decoder
A SELCAL coding is in the wire integration unit (WIU) and gives each
airplane its SELCAL code.
The SELCAL decoder monitors for audio tones. If the tones are the
same as the code, the decoder sends a signal to the audio management
unit (AMU).

Indications
The modularized aural warning electronics assembly (MAWEA) makes
a chime signal and sends it to the aural warning speakers.
The AMU sends a signal to the audio control panels (ACPs). The ACPs
turn on the call light for the transceiver that received the SELCAL code.
To reset the indications, push the CALL light on the ACP or push the mic
switch for the related radio.

Power
The 28v dc bus 3 supplies power to the power supply in the selcal
decoder.

Audio
The selcal decoder gets audio from the VHF and HF transceivers.

Discretes
The selcal decoder sends a call set discrete for each of the five
communications radios to the audio management unit (AMU). The AMU
sends a call reset discrete to the selcal decoder for each radio.
The selcal decoder sends a chime request discrete to the modularized
avionics and warning electronics assembly (MAWEA).
A set of 16 program pins puts the airplane code into the selcal decoder.

Flight Interphone
The AMU sends call set data to each audio control panel (ACP) on a
digital bus. The ACPs send call reset data to the AMU on the same bus.
There are PTT inputs to the AMU from each ACP and from each crew
member's hand mic. A PTT can reset a selcal call.

ARINC COMMUNICATION ADDRESSING AND REPORTING

SYSTEM - INTRODUCTION
The ARINC communication addressing and reporting system (ACARS)
enhances air-ground communications and reduces flight crew work load
through the use of high-speed, digital data link messages. These
messages downlink from an airplane to airline operations facilities by
way of VHF radio, SATCOMM, land lines, and the ARINC data link
control station. Messages can uplink to an airplane through this same
network.
Voice communication between an airplane and ground telephone
circuits is also possible.
The network covers the continental United States, parts of Canada,
Australia, Mexico, Europe, and in many other countries around the
world. 23.27.0701 -001

ACARS - VHF/SATCOMM INTERFACE

The ACARS MU sends these outputs to the center VHF
communications transceiver:
- Voice/data annunciation output, this output goes to the center VHF as
the voice/data select
- Data tones (1200 Hz, 2400 Hz)
- Data keyline
- Port select discrete, the radio communication panels (RCPs) also get
the port select discrete output of the MU
- Frequency.
The ACARS MU gets data from the center VHF communications
transceiver.
The RCP transfer switch can override ACARS. The ACARS override
output is the remote voice/data select input to the MU.
The RCPs have a program pin for a dedicated ACARS installation. With
this pin grounded, ACARS always appears on the RCP display whether
active or not.

ACARS - RADIO COMMUNICATION PANEL

23.27.0717 -002

Purpose
The radio communication panel (RCP) sends tuning data to the
communication radios. It allows for selection of the active or standby
frequency for each radio.

General Description
When ACARS is active, the MU tunes the VHF communications
transceiver. When ACARS is not active, or in the voice mode, the RCP
tunes the VHF communications transceiver.

Controls and Indications

The active and standby frequency indicators are LED displays.
For the center VHF when ACARS is active:
- The active frequency display shows the word ACARS.
- The standby frequency display shows the last active frequency.
For the center VHF when ACARS is not used:
- The active frequency display shows the active frequency.
- The standby frequency display shows the word ACARS. (Thus the
center VHF active frequency can only be changed when ACARS is
used)
Push the transfer switch to override ACARS on the active frequency
indicator. The RCP then returns to voice operation. The word ACARS
shows in the standby window.

The emergency locator transmitter (ELT) is located in the aft section of

the airplane. The ELT provides an emergency locator signal to aid in
search and rescue operations. The ELT transmits on international
distress frequencies 121.5, 243.0, and 406.025 MHz.

A switch inside the ELT will cause the ELT to activate automatically in a
crash situation. The activation will only occur when the ELT is installed
in its tray. Automatic activation on the ELT will not occur during shipping
or if the ELT is dropped.

Manual operation of the ELT can be accomplished locally with a switch

on the ELT or remotely with a switch located on the ELT control panel
on the pilot's overhead panel, P5.

The ELT is mounted on a tray that is installed against the airplane

fuselage. Four screws hold the tray to the airplane. The ELT is held in
the tray by an end cap which attaches to the tray by two thumb-screws.

The ELT contains a self-contained battery pack for its power. When it is
necessary to replace the batteries, replace the battery pack as a unit.

The ELT transmits through a dedicated antenna located on the top of

the fuselage forward of the vertical fin. Two coaxial cables connect the
antenna to the connectors on the ELT.

COMPONENT DETAILS
Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT)
The ELT rests in a mounting tray that is installed to the fuselage of the
airplane. An end cap with two thumb-screws attaches the ELT to the
mounting tray.
The ELT consists of a these components:
The ELT contains a non-rechargeable battery pack assembly for its
power. The battery pack is replaced as a unit.
A printed circuit assembly (PCA) which contains all the electronics and
the "G"-switch (gravity switch). The "G"-switch activates under high
gravitational force such as experienced in a crash.
The "G"-switch is only enabled when the ELT is installed in its mounting
tray. When the ELT is removed from the tray, it is safe from accidental
activation if it is dropped or during shipping, assuming the ON/OFF
switch remains OFF.
A plastic shield between the PCA and the battery pack protects the
electronics from possible battery leakage.
An end cap contains the coaxial connectors for the antenna, a Molex

The ELT remote control switch is a guarded, three position toggle switch
located on pilots overhead panel P5.
The switch allows for testing, resetting, or manually activating the ELT
from the flight compartment, provided the ON-OFF switch on the ELT is
set to "OFF".
The ELT remote switch allows deactivation of the ELT after it has been
activated, but it does not allow disarming or disabling the ELT.
The ELT will begin transmitting when the ELT switch is set to "ON".
The ELT can be reset or deactivated by momentarily switching the
remote switch to "RESET" and then allowing it to return to the "ARMED"
position.
The switch is spring loaded from "RESET" back to "ARMED". With the
switch set to "ARMED", the ELT is set to be automatically activated.
With the guard closed, the switch will be in the "ARMED" position.

External Antenna
The external antenna is a blade type antenna mounted on the top of the
fuselage along centerline. The antenna is connected to the ELT by two
coaxial cables, the length of which is very important. The antenna is
impedance matched to the coaxial cables.

OPERATION

Functional Description
(1) The ELT has a non-rechargeable battery pack as its power supply.
(2) When properly installed on the airplane, the ELT will start
automatically in a crash. It can also be operated by setting the switch on
the ELT to "ON" or the remote switch on the ELT control panel to "ON"
For normal operation, the switch on the ELT is set to "OFF" and the
switch on the control panel is set to "ARMED". The ELT light will be off.

CONTROL
(1) For normal operation, set the switch on the ELT to "OFF" and the
control panel switch to "ARMED".
(2) When testing the ELT, set the switch on the control panel to "ON"
and monitor 121.5 MHz on a VHF radio. Do not keep this switch in the
"ON" position for more than 15 seconds at a time. This will prevent
emergency search operations that are not necessary.
(3) If the ELT is accidentally activated, reset it by setting the local switch
to "ON" and immediately back to "OFF", or by setting the remote switch
momentarily to "RESET" and allowing it to return to the "ARMED"
position.

VOICE RECORDER SYSTEM

The voice recorder system consists of a:
- Voice recorder control panel
- Microphone monitor panel
- Four-track cockpit voice recorder (CVR)
The voice recorder system records inputs from the:
- Audio management unit (AMU)
- Microphone monitor panel
The AMU audio outputs from all three channels (captain, first officer and
first observer) are routed directly to the cockpit voice recorder. The
microphone monitor panel picks up flight compartment ambient sounds
such as voices and aural warnings. The audio goes through the control
panel to the cockpit voice recorder. The recorded audio can be
monitored at jacks on the cockpit voice recorder or the control panel. An
underwater locating device is attached to the front panel of the cockpit
voice recorder. It activates automatically when immersed in water.
An erase switch allows bulk erasure of the recording while on the ground
and with the parking brake set.
Press the test switch on the control panel to do a test of the voice
recorder system.
The meter on the control panel shows the results of the test. 23.71.0702 -001

VOICE RECORDER SYSTEM - POWER INTERFACE

General Description
The voice recorder system gets power when any of the following is true:
- Any engine is in run.
- It is less than five minutes after the last engine shuts down.
- The voice recorder switch is in the ON position.

Operation
When any engine fuel cutoff switch is in the RUN position, it sends a
ground discrete to the voice recorder engine cutoff relay. This turns on
the voice recorder. When the last engine shuts down, the discrete to the
voice recorder engine cutoff relay goes to an open condition. A circuit in
the relay makes the relay stay on for 5 minutes after the discrete goes
to an open condition. Thus, this relay sends power to the voice recorder
whenever any engine is running and for 5 minutes after all engines shut
down.
When all engines are off, the fuel cutoff relays for the four engines send
a ground discrete to the voice recorder switch. When this discrete is a
ground, and when a person puts the voice recorder switch into the ON
position, the voice recorder switch stays in the ON position. The
solenoid-held voice recorder switch sends 115v ac from ac bus 1 to the
voice recorder when the switch is on.
When any engine is running, the switch does not stay in the ON position,
because the discrete to the switch is open.
When the cockpit voice recorder gets 115v ac, it supplies:
- 18v dc to the audio amplifier in the control panel.
- 30v dc, routed externally, to its own bias generator.
