Van Brakel wist daar niets van. Hij at en dronk precies alsof hij thuis
was, en hij maakte boven aan dek een „fijn” partijtje met een
particulier en een inspecteerend ambtenaar, die zijn halven diensttijd
op en neer varende sleet tot heil van „den lande.” Het noodlot
vervolgde hem weder: zijn g u i g n e was in vollen gang, en reeds in
de eerste twee dagen slonk het beetje geld, dat hij voor zijn inboedel
had gekregen, tot op de helft. Maar hij voelde nog bankpapier in zijn
portefeuille en zoolang dàt maar het geval was, treurde hij niet.
Zij was dan ook geen „lieve verschijning” toen ze aan den wal stapte
op de plaats, van waar zij nog zeventig palen per reiswagen het
binnenland in moest. De m a g a n g van Van Brakel wist geen raad
van de drukte. In Indië geboren, had Lucie, schoon van
Europeesche ouders, enkele echt Indische eigenaardigheden, en
daartoe behoorde, als ze op reis ging, een ware zondvloed van
pakjes en b o e n k o e s s a n s ; behalve het groote aantal koffers,
waren er allerlei blikken en kartonnen doozen en doosjes,
trommeltjes, in doeken en oude sarongs geknoopte pakken en
pakjes, groote en kleine krandjangs, ja zelfs in pisangbladeren
gepakte zaken,—kortom de arme m a g a n g had geen handen
genoeg om te dragen en geen oogen genoeg om te waken dat de
koelies niets wegdroegen.
Met een kind op den arm en een aan de hand, stapte Lucie over de
plank aan wal, gevolgd door de baboe, die er [154]ook een droeg en
onder haar arm een groot pak, terwijl Van Brakel, ook belast en
beladen, den trein sloot.
Het was onder dat alles voor Lucie onmogelijk geweest niet met haar
man in gesprek te komen; daar zij van lieverlede er aan gewoon was
geraakt, was de eerst stroeve toon geweken, en thans spraken ze
heel gewoon weer met elkaar, ofschoon nog van de oude
verhouding geen quaestie was.
Toen de familie in het logement haar intrek nam en een paar ruime
kamers kreeg, was ieder voor zich in zijn schik. Tot zelfs de
tweelingen gaven luidruchtige bewijzen hunner tevredenheid en
kraaiden van pleizier, dat iemand hooren en zien verging.
Doch de vreugde duurde niet langer dan een etmaal. Toen stonden
twee oude, op allerlei manieren opgelapte, maar zeker nooit schoon
gemaakte rijtuigen voor de deur van het hotel, elk bespannen met
vier paarden. In het ééne ging Van Brakel met de oudste kinderen en
zijn m a g a n g op den bok, in het tweede Lucie met de tweelingen
en de baboe en voorts de ontelbare pakjes, nog vermeerderd met
eet- en drinkwaren voor „onderweg.”
En voort ging het, hobbel je niet, zoo heb je niet; nu eens in goeden
gang, dan weer wanhopig langzaam een hoogte opgetrokken door
karbouwen; hier in een razende vaart, zoodat alles rammelde en
rinkelde of de oude kast zou uitéénvliegen, terwijl de losse
rolsteenen onder de wielen uitschietend met geraas naar
weerszijden van den weg sprongen,—dáár minuten onbeweeglijk stil
staande, omdat een der paarden verkoos zich dwars in het gareel te
zetten en [155]door geen slagen, duwen of schreeuwen van zijn
plaats was te krijgen.
Zoo ging het voort den ganschen dag, door dorre bosschen van djati
langs nederige desa’s en rijk bloeiende sawa’s, over bergglooiingen
met een heerlijk uitzicht op het omliggend landschap, en langs
uitgegraven wegen tusschen hooge wanden van aarde en steen met
woekerplanten deels bedekt.
Van Brakel trof het dadelijk naar zijn zin. Terwijl zijn vrouw en
kinderen sliepen, ging hij baden, kleedde zich en deed zich te goed,
terwijl het hem zelfs gelukte een partijtje te vinden, waarbij hij tot
twee uren in den nacht stand hield. Wat hem ook in den steek liet,
zijn krachtige constitutie bleef hem getrouw!
Zij zouden geen eigen woning huren en meubelen, maar, ten minste
voorloopig, blijven wonen in het logement, dat wel niet groot was,
maar waarin ze toch twee vrij goede kamers konden krijgen, tegen
niet al te hoogen prijs.
Er viel overigens voor Van Brakel nogal wat te doen.
Het plaatsje was in zijn opkomst en breidde zich uit. Er moest een
school gebouwd worden, een nieuw kantoor voor den assistent-
resident f a c t o t u m , en over de kali moest een nieuwe brug
worden gelegd. [156]
Hij had het druk, en aan zijn ijver ontbrak niets, dat zag iedereen
duidelijk, terwijl zijn ondergeschikten de overtuiging kregen, dat zij
„achterna-gereden” werden door iemand, die zijn en hun zaken
kende.
Aan den eenen kant voelde hij zijn ambtelijk gewicht meer, en was
zijn zelfstandigheid grooter. En wat overigens „het leven” betreft, dat
was voor hem vrij wel ’t zelfde gebleven. Er was ook een sociëteit, al
was het zonder steenen muren en marmeren vloeren. Maar
homberen kon men er uitstekend en daar er zeer dikwijls landheeren
kwamen, was er p l e n t y gelegenheid voor „fijntjes,” welke
gelegenheden Van Brakel niet gaarne had verzuimd.
Voor Lucie vlood het leven eentonig heen. Bij gemis aan
huishoudelijke bezigheden, zat ze den halven dag te lezen, en werd
ze verbazend dik en vet.
Op een ochtend kwam de post wat later dan gewoonlijk aan. Van
Brakel was reeds naar zijn kantoor. Zij keek de adressen eens na:
een paar dienstbrieven en een particulieren, met het naamstempel
van een advocaat buitenop.
Wat zou dat zijn? Vroeger had ze er niet aan gedacht zijn brieven te
openen; de inhoud interesseerde haar niet. Nu, bij den velen ledigen
tijd, dien ze had, en de onaangename verhouding tot Herman, was
ze nieuwsgieriger geworden. Waarom zou ze dien brief ook niet
kunnen openen? Eigenlijk waren het toch even goed haar zaken als
de zijne!
Onder het lezen drukte haar gezicht de grootste verbazing uit. Wat
was dat? Een aanmaning tot terugbetaling van [157]door mevrouw Du
Roy geleende gelden met de rente en de rente van de rente? Nu
begreep zij er in het geheel niets meer van. Hoe ze ook pikirde, het
gelukte haar niet dáár een touw aan vast te maken.
Den geheelen ochtend was die brief haar niet uit de gedachte; het
maakte haar zoo zenuwachtig, dat ze moeite had om de komst van
Van Brakel af te wachten.
Met vragenden blik legde zij hem den brief van den advocaat voor,
die zeer onaangenaam gesteld was, waarin een korte termijn van
betaling was gesteld en waarbij gedreigd werd met een nieuwe
aanvraag om beslag op zijn traktement.
Op het eerste gezicht van den geopenden brief was hij bleek
geworden. Niet, dat het hem onverwacht op het lijf viel,—hij had wel
begrepen dat t’ avond of morgen zoo iets hem boven het hoofd hing;
dan er waren een paar weken overheengegaan, en hij, die zich zoo
licht wiegde in een rustige rust, dacht er in de laatste dagen volstrekt
niet meer aan.
Het was zoo gemakkelijk niet en hij was ook de man [158]niet voor
het ontwerpen eener eenigszins romantische conceptie; er een
geschikte novelle van te maken was zijn werk evenmin, en hij
biechtte als iemand, die niet geheel op de hoogte is van de geboden
en dus niet precies weet, waar het zwaartepunt ligt zijner
overtredingen; maar hij deed het eerlijk, zonder achterhoudendheid,
en wanneer hij liet uitkomen, dat hij ondanks alles geen oogenblik
had opgehouden veel te houden van Lucie, terwijl de andere hem
onverschillig was, dan behoorde er luttele menschenkennis toe om
den indruk te krijgen, dat wat hij zei de waarheid was.
Hij voelde dat het hem opluchtte, alsof hem een pak van het hart
werd genomen.
Lucie zat er bij met een strak gelaat. Och, ze wist wel dat hij niet
loog, en ze w i l d e het hem wel vergeven, maar zij behoorde tot die
vrouwen, die niets willen missen en niets gunnen aan een ander, ook
niet als ze er zelf hoegenaamd geen genoegen van beleven.
„Ik weet het nog niet; ik wil er mijn best toe doen; maar eerst moet
dat wijf haar geld hebben; vóór dien tijd heb ik rust noch duur. Al
moesten we er ons laatste stuk kleeren voor verkoopen, ze moet en
ze zal het geld hebben, dat zwijn!”
Dáárin stemde hij toe. Wel wist hij niet op welke wijze de goocheltoer
te verrichten, zelfs niet als ’t laatste stuk kleeren er aan te pas kwam,
doch zóó slim was hij wel, dat hij haar niet tegensprak, maar in alles
gelijk gaf. Zij kon zich er op verlaten, dat hij het middel zou vinden,
dat bezwoer hij bij kris en kras; als z i j maar weer wel met hem
wilde zijn, gelijk [159]voorheen, dan zou die ongelukkige zaak spoedig
uit de wereld komen; daartoe wilde hij alles doen, a l l e s .
Hij kuste haar; zij liet hem begaan, nog bezig met haar eigen
gedachten en vóór hem pleitend tegen zichzelve. Alles
bijeengenomen, was hij toch nog veel beter dan menigeen;
bovendien, alle mannen deden wel eens iets wat niet goed was, en
hij was bij slot van rekening er ook maar „ingeloopen”, zonder booze
voornemens; zij had wel eens meer gehoord en gelezen van dat
soort vrouwen, die knappe, jonge mannen verleiden.… Zuchtend gaf
zij hem zijn kus terug.
Geweten, dat hij door een oud ambtenaar, die wel onder zijn bevelen
stond, maar toch een goede positie bekleedde, zeer nauwlettend
werd bespionneerd in al zijn doen en laten! Dat deed hem de
hoofdingenieur Willert, en die meende, dat hij daartoe zedelijk
verplicht was! Van Brakel was een speler; Van Brakel zat diep in
schulden; Van Brakel had niet alleen geldelijke verantwoordelijkheid,
maar hij kon gemakkelijk knoeien ten nadeele van „den lande,”—
zoo’n man mocht niet zonder scherpe contrôle zijn, en wanneer hij
die niet officiëel over hem kon uitoefenen, dan moest het maar
officieus wezen. [160]
Als hij, Willert, daartoe zijn maatregelen niet nam, dan achtte hij zich
zedelijk niet verantwoord tegenover de Regeering.
Lucie liep, toen haar man weg was, ongeduldig en zenuwachtig het
galerijtje op en neer. Hun kamers waren in de bijgebouwen; langs
een slordig schoongemaakte goot, die voor het roodsteenen
galerijtje liep, stond een rij boompjes geplant, de afgevallene
bladeren lagen in die goot te rotten; er heerschte altijd een
zoetachtige, vochtige humuslucht, en het was, nu de invallende
Westmousson zware plasregens omlaagzond, erg vochtig. Maar dat
deed geen kwaad. ’t Plaatsje lag vrij hoog; ’t was er koel, en de
vochtigheid was niet zoo kwaadaardig als in de heete kustplaatsen,
waar zij miasmen kweekt bij milliarden.
En nu moest papa van het land af, omdat een l u i s .… Ajakkes! Het
was, vond ze, verschrikkelijk, dat zulk een nietig ongedierte zulke
rampen kon teweegbrengen; het was meer dan erg! Waarom ook
stelde het Gouvernement geen ambtenaren aan om die luizen te
vangen! Die arme oudeheer! Wat moest hij beginnen? Als zij hem nu
nog maar onder dak kon nemen, maar dat ging ook niet; ze zaten
zelf in een logement en nog tot overmaat van ramp erg in schulden.
Weder peinsde ze op een middel om die gemeene slet Du Roy dat
geld terug te geven, doch altijd bleef dat middel ontbreken.
Van Brakel vond, toen hij ging kijken naar het metselen van de
landhoofden, waaraan was begonnen, een pas aangekomen prauw
en een reusachtig houtvlot, beide vastgemeerd.
„Wel, heb je nogal een goede reis gehad?” vroeg de ingenieur, terwijl
hij van den hoogen oever den blik liet gaan over ’t vaartuig en het
houtvlot.
Al pratende liepen zij den dijk op; Van Brakel moest naar het in
aanbouw zijnde schoolgebouw; de Chinees liep maar mee. Hij
praatte veel over al de r o e g i e , welke hij bij deze leverantie nu
weer zou hebben, en waardoor hij met een bankroet werd bedreigd,
alles om den ingenieur gunstig te stemmen, maar dat lukte niet.
„Nu ja, man,” zei Van Brakel met een slim gezicht, „daar weten we
alles van; jullie wordt allemaal rijk van de r o e g i e , die je hebt in
Indië, en wij, Europeanen, worden straatarm van de o e n t o e n g !
Neen, ouwe heer, die mopjes behoef je mij niet te vertellen hoor;
jullie, Chineezen, kunnen verduiveld [164]goed rekenen; beter dan
wij. En als je inschrijft, dan weet je drommels goed wat je doet.”
„S o e n g o e m a t i .….”
Van Brakel klemde de lippen stijf op één, alsof hij bang was, dat hij
tegen wil en dank op die manier spreken zou; hij trok de
wenkbrauwen samen, en zijn geheele wezen teekende verzet;
onwillekeurig verhaastte hij zijn tred, als wilde hij iets ontloopen, en
al voortgaande ranselde hij met zijn stok het gebladerte van den
pagger, die langs den weg liep, alsof daarin iets moest
doodgeslagen worden.
Van Brakel’s verbeelding, zoo weinig als hij die had, begon te
werken; hij zag de vreugde op ’t gezicht van Lucie, als hij haar kon
zeggen, dat het hem was gelukt een middel te vinden om mevrouw
Du Roy te betalen; hij stelde zich voor, hoe gelukkig haar dat zou
maken en welke aangename dagen er dan voor hen beiden zouden
volgen; hij drong dat alles in gedachten op den voorgrond, en de
gemoedsbezwaren naar achteren.
„Ik zal je een acceptatie er voor geven,” zei Van Brakel driftig; „ik wil
het niet cadeau hebben.”
Met een gebaar alsof dàt de quaestie niet was, haalde de Chinees
de schouders op, en het viel Van Brakel mee, toen de man volstrekt
niet schrok van het bedrag.
„Ik kan het u niet in eens geven; ik heb zooveel contanten niet.” [166]
„Vandaag?”
„Anders is niets noodig. Als de ingenieur maar een beetje wil helpen.
Daar heeft niemand last van, en wij allebei hebben er genoegen
van.”
„Ja, ingenieur. Ik zal vast laten beginnen met lossen. Mijn mandoor
zocht koelies en het is nu droog weer.”
Van het werk zag hij niet veel; het ging hem dien dag alles
machinaal af; zijn gedachten waren er niet bij; hij had haast om thuis
te komen.
Lucie zat bij ’t portfleschje; zij had hem nog in lang niet verwacht.
„Hoe jij zoo vroeg?”
„Heb je …?”
„Ja.”
Van Brakel nam een stoel, ging aan den anderen kant van de tafel
zitten en zond zijn bediende naar binnen om een bittertje. Zij vroeg
niets en hij zei niets; ze zag wel aan zijn gezicht, dat er iets was, dat
hem geweldig hinderde, en ze begreep wel half en half wat het was.
„Wees vooral voorzichtig, Herman, en zorg, dat jij hem en niet hij jou
aan het lijntje krijgt. Sta hem niet te veel toe.”
Verrast keek hij haar aan. Het bleek uit haar woorden, dat ze alles
reeds overdacht had, en het idee zich te laten „smeren” reeds met al
zijn gevolgen bij haar was overwogen en gerijpt. [168]
Maar hij bleef zwijgen, en dat hinderde haar en maakte haar boos.
Daar zat hij nu te kijken, gelijk een uil in doodsnood! En wat had hij
niet gedaan, vroeger, om aan geld te komen bij mevrouw Du Roy?
Dat was, meende zij, dan toch heel wat anders. Toen had hij h a a r
verraderlijk bedrogen; toen had hij zijn huwelijkstrouw geschonden,
en hij had er, voor zoover zij zich herinnerde, altijd een vroolijk
gezicht bij weten te trekken. Nu, nu hij deed wat zoo velen deden,
zonder dat iemand er persoonlijk nadeel of verdriet van had, zat hij
voor zich uit te kijken, met een gezicht alsof hij een moord had
gedaan.
„Je bent gek.…. Je hebt al heel fraaie ideeën.…. Mij heb je niet
ontzien.…. Nu er niets slechts is gebeurd, stel je je aan.…. Iedereen
doet het hier in Indië.…. Ze hebben gelijk ook.…. Als de een ’t niet
doet, doet het de ander.…. Ik wed dat Willert.….”
En toen dit was afgeloopen, was de zaak in orde, zóó goed, dat ze
beiden weldra zeer gerust insliepen en niet wakker werden voordat
de zon ten ondergang neigde, terwijl de meiden reeds weer met de
kinderen uit waren gegaan.
’s Avonds echter kreeg Van Brakel het weer te kwaad. In de donkere
slaapkamer lei hij lang wakker. Lucie sliep rustig; haar regelmatige
ademhaling bewees het. Hem maalden allerlei dingen door het
hoofd; de traditie der eerlijke Nederlandsche Van Brakels zat hem in
den weg. Welk een klank had die naam altijd gehad! Nog hoorde hij
zijn ouden vader, die zoo bang was toen hij, Herman, naar Indië zou
gaan. De goede trouw, de onkreukbare eerlijkheid, waarmee in geen
enkel opzicht viel te transigeeren, was hun erfdeel geweest van
vader op zoon; het waren denkbeelden, overgegaan als
eigenschappen: „Nooit geld nemen, dat u niet toekomt,” was een
familie-spreuk, die van ziel tot ziel overging, als lichamelijke
hoedanigheden van lichaam tot lichaam.
Hij kon het in bed niet uithouden. Zacht schoof hij er uit naar buiten.
Het was pas elf uren, en er was nog leven in [170]het logement. In de
achtergalerij verschenen een paar breedgeschouderde
mannenfiguren. Van Brakel stond op en ging naar hen toe.
„Bonsoir!”
„Kom, ben je gek: laat ons hier een speeltafeltje zetten, en dan
maken we nog een prettig partijtje.”
Er werd vrij hoog gespeeld en tot laat in den nacht. Het resultaat
was, dat Van Brakel opstond, stil in zijn kamer ging, zachtjes den
sleutel wegnam onder het hoofdkussen van Lucie, de kast opende
en uit een chub-trommeltje tweehonderd gulden nam; tweehonderd
gulden, een deel van ’t bedrag, door hem van den Chineeschen
aannemer ontvangen. Daarna ging hij terug en betaalde zijn
medespelers.
Zij lachten. Licht, zeiden ze, dat zij er hun reisgeld uitklopten. En Van
Brakel lachte ook. Hij zou hun wel krijgen, een ander maal; hij had
dien avond weer gruwelijk d é v e i n e gehad; geen enkel spel; en
a l s hij eens uit wanhoop een s a n s p r e n d r e waagde, dan zat
alles op één hand tegen en was het: c o d i l l e , m a f i l l e ! Maar
het was niets; als zij weer kwamen, zou hij bloedig revanche nemen.
De planters zaten nog een oogenblik te praten in hun kamer—daar
was er in ’t logementje slechts één voor hen beiden disponibel[171]—
toen Van Brakel reeds naar bed was, waar hij dadelijk insliep.
Des morgens, toen Lucie hem wekte, vertelde hij het haar. Hij dacht,
dat ze het zou opvatten als een gewone zaak; ’t was immers het
spel!
„’t Was om mijn speelbeer te betalen. Het is immers niets, ik win het
toch weer terug.”
Zij zat op den rand van het bed, met de handen saamgevouwen in
den schoot, en ze keek met verslagenheid voor zich uit. Voor het
eerst begreep ze, dat het spel een ongeluk kon wezen, zelfs waar
het niet werkte als een verscheurend dier, maar knagend, als een
worm. Zij had niets aan, dan haar sarong en haar k o e t a n g ; en dat
stond haar goed; hoe minder ze aan had, des te beter was ze, als
welgevormde, goed ontwikkelde vrouw, gekleed. Van Brakel vond
dat ook, en hij glimlachte met welgevallen. Zijn Lucie zag er toch
maar goed uit, zooals ze daar zat; ’t was een lief gezicht, die zacht
golvende lijnen van hals, schouders en armen, door de fluweelen
blanke huid afgeteekend tegen de neteldoeksche [172]klamboe. Het
deed hem weer aan. Hij had bij haar al zijn vroegere viriliteit
teruggevonden; er ging voor hem, dacht hij, toch niets boven zijn
eigen vrouw. Buiten de deur vond men het ware niet, dat had hij aan
mevrouw Du Roy gezien; men zocht ten slotte wat men toch niet
vinden kon.
„Dat is het eenige excuus; maar nu zorg je ook, dat het vóór
hedenmiddag er weer is, hoor!”
„Nu, maak je maar niet boos, kind; ik zal het van middag
meebrengen. Straks ga ik even bij den architect aan om het te
halen.”
Met Willert was hij samen als opzichter in dienst getreden, en met
den hem sedert zoo ver voorbij gestreefden oud-collega hield hij nog
steeds een vriendschappelijke briefwisseling, die ook wel eens
