Prerequisites
Before jumping into the lessons in this book, make sure you have a working knowledge of your
computer and its operating system. Also make sure that your system is set up correctly and that
you’ve installed the required software and hardware, because the software must be purchased
separately from this book.
You need to install Lightroom CC, Photoshop CC, and the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw
for Photoshop CC. You’re welcome to follow along with versions of the programs as far back as
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 and Adobe Photoshop CS6, but in that case, some exercises in
the book will not work as written. For system requirements and support, visit
helpx.adobe.com/photoshop.html and helpx.adobe.com/lightroom.html.
This book was crafted specifically for using Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC together for
photographers. Although it includes enough information to get you up and running in both
programs, it’s not a comprehensive manual. When you’re ready to dive further into each
program, pick up Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic CC Classroom in a Book and Adobe
Photoshop CC Classroom in a Book.

written permission from Adobe Systems Inc. and the individual photographers who took the
pictures.
Note
You can think of layers as the ingredients on this delicious (not real) burger. The burger
composite is made up of many layers (different toppings, the patty, and the bread); you
see a single image. The Layers panel, on the right, shows you an exploded view. In fact,
while the burger shows you a top-to-bottom construction, the french fries are actually
behind the burger image. In this screen capture, you can see that the picture is not only a
construction of a series of images, but also a bird’s-eye view of a series of elements
arranged on a page.
Photoshop has a way to counteract this by using different types of layers—elements (or whole
pictures) that are stacked on top of one another, like layers in a sandwich. While layers offer
increased creativity and control, they also add to the overall complexity of the image, and the file
size just gets bigger and bigger.
