II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

● Prefix is one or more syllables that can be added at the beginning


of a root word to form a new word.

● Suffix is added to the end of a word and can change a word from
one part of speech to another.

● A base or root word is a word that can stand on its own. It cannot
be divided into smaller parts and still retain its meaning.

Take a look at the chart below to see some of the most common affixes,
their meanings and some examples of word that use them:
