Fuel ofl dilution check, Dear Sirs, The examination of the various engine operators reports hes shown that the dilution checks prescribed as a maintenance practice can be differently interpreted. The dilution of fuel into the oil is usually indicated by the increase in oil level tank and also by a particular smell of the oil. However, it is important to know the exect ratio of dilution so as to prevent the operation above the maximum Limit which could lead to seriovs troubles. The method of detection in 4 laboratory allows very accurate measure but is not alvays possible, at least with come of our operators. Therefore, a practicel means to detect the dilution ratio is very useful. This prectice should be quick, reliable end accurate en to detect the appearance of dilution, its progress and eventually the p missible Limit. vgh Among the devices meeting these requirements, we heve choosen a viscosity ball indicator mdnufactured by : STANHOPE - SETA LIMITED, Station Rod at CHERTSEY - Surrey - Great Britain The supply of this device is ensured by PROLABO, 12, rue Pelée ~ 75/ PARIS XI® - under the mark : comparateur de viscosité A chute de bille SETA, Type 10,270.00. ‘The operating instructions of this device form the subject of the technical note here attached. With such a way, ve hope to solve the problems of fvel oil dilution check met by sone of our operators, We remain, at your disposal for any further inquiry, Yours faithfully, TURBOMECA + SuiteN® 3,0 BORDES FUEL-OIL DILUTION RATIO CHECK WITH A VISCOSITY BALL INDICATOR GENERAL. ~ The device consists of three tubes with a metal. support used to keep the tubes parallel. ‘MATERIALS REQUIRED, ~ 1 ~ New oil of same specification than the oil to be checked. 2 ~ Fuel used for the engine. PREPARATION, = 1 = In a clean vessel, prepare 10 cm3 of the following mixture : 1 part of fuel 19 parte of new oil. This mixture represents a dilution of about 5 %. 2 ~ In another vessel, prepare 10 cm3 of the following mixture + 1 part of fuel 9 parts of new oil. This mixture represents a dilution of about 10 %. 3 - Take a sample of 10 cm3 of the oil to be checked. OPERATING PRINCIPLE, 1/ Fill the tubes of the viscosity indicator ; + the first with the 5 % iixture, = the second with oil to be checked, + the third with the 10 % mixture. Remove the gulps of air by filling tubes fully and then place the plastic seal provided with a capilarity orifice (3). Blank the tubes with the seal (2) and the threaded cap (1). 2/ Place the tubes on the indicator support (4). Wait for temperature balance (about 15 to 20 minutes). 3/ Place the indicator upside down and compare the fall of the balls The fall is directly proportional to the oil viscosity and is not affected by the way the indicator is hold (vertical or inclined) because-the three tubes are kept parallel. TURBOMECA BORDES The observation of the Suen? 4. fall of the balls allows to determine immediately the dilution ratio. The dilution ratio is comprised : = between 0 and 5 % when the ball of the rapidly than the one = between 5 and 10%: when the ball of the rapidly than the one rapidly than the one = above 10% : when the ball of the rapidly than the one NOTE. - tube n® 2 (oil to be checked) falls less of the tube n° 1 (mixture at 5%). tube n° 2 (oil to be checked) falls more pf the tube n° 1 (mixture at 5 % but less of the tube n° 3 (mixture at 10 %). tube n° 2 (oil to be checked) falls more of the tube n° 3 (mixture at 10 %). When ordering the device, it is necessary to mention the type of oil used (i.e. mineral or synthetic) in reason of the quality of the seals. TURBOMECA ROE BREVETS SZYDLOWSK! Filter. Dear Sirs, We draw your attention on the control troubles which can result from the clogging of the fuel filter due to operation with polluted fuel. Although located downstream of the airframe filter, the F.C.U, filter should be checked, and replaced if necessary, when these troubles appear or in case of by-pass of the airframe filter. It is then necessary to inspect the filter during each periodic inspection, or whenever troubles occur, if the F,C.U. is suspected, and prior to the removal of the control unit. In operation, the clogging of the F.C.U, filter can result in starting difficulties or possibly in a loss of RPM in stabilised conditions. Whereas it is easy to notice the clogging when the deposit is important, it is sometimes difficult to be sure of it when the deposit is not clearly visible. In some cases, an alteration of the colour can be an indication of clogging, though it is not the sole symptom, so : WHEN THERE IS_A DOUBT, A VISUAL EXAMINATION WILL NOT BE SUFFICIENT, ‘PROCEED TO THE REPLACEMENT OF THIS FILTER. Besides, the necessary steps to be taken in case of by-pass of the airframe fuel filter should be stated in the flight manual or aircraft maintenance manual, Please refer to this document for the maintenance practices to be carried-out on the airframe, We are at your disposal for any further information and remain, yours faithfully, ~ TURBOMECA SI.GE SOCIVL, RUKEAUN EI USIN - BORDES - 64220 BIZANOS (Py, Atantigues) BREVEIS szvOLOWsK! Preventive maintenance. "Pitch feedback device microswitches check". Dear Sirs, We have just noticed on an engine returned for repair, the defective operation of a microswitch P/N 0265705140 of the pitch feedback device. The defective operation of this microswitch (PMV2) was due to an accidental jamming of its small wheel which was stuck and vorn. Consequently, the corresponding P.M.V.2 cam of the pitch feedback device couldn't actuate correctly this microswitch, and therefore the P.M.V. (FFP) valve on the propeller governor was left in "clased” position. This valve being closed, no oil circulation is possible and particularly the fine pitch action after take-off. As for now, we ask you : 1/ to test, before each flight, the flight fine pitch device as instructed in the operating manual or flight manual. 2/ to check precautionally the free rotation of all the small wheels actuating the microswitches on each pitch feedback device, on all your engines. We also ask you to incorporate these checks to the periodic inspection of your engines. Please inform us of any findings in operation concerning this subject. In this case, the propeller pitch can not be reduced below the value of this P.P.M.V. microswitch. C/ Description ~ - Fitting in series with microswitches P.M.V.1 and P.M.V.2 of two protecting flight fine pitch microswitches (P.P.M.V.1 and P.P.M.V.2). ~ The modification consists in replacing the four existing microswitches by 2 CEM blocks of small dimensions comprising 3 microcontacts each. D/ Adjustment procedure - = These blocks are pre-set in the factory and the only thing remaining to be done is the angular adjustment by the rotation of each cam corresponding to the microswitch. - Further, each microswitch is independent of the two others in the block. This allows replacement of a defective microswitch without disturbing the others. - We have also profited by this modification to make easier the inspection of P.M.V. and P.P.M.V. setting. In effect, we have seen that by putting a lamp on pin 3 (see enclosed sketch) on each line of P.M.V. - P.P.M.V. and starting from a pitch setting of about 15 degrees, the light goes out ; in passing 9 degrees, the P.P.M.V. tilts and the lamp comes on ; in passing 5 degrees, the P.M.V. tilts and the light goes out. Note : For this inspection, it is possible to also use P.M.V. box, part n° 881. 4.334.000. - The pitch repetition comprises 6 cams of which the designation, the setting and the sense of adjustment are set out below : Designation Setting Adjustment _sens ‘Twin jet microswitch + 25 degrees. from fine pitch towards coarse pitch. (5 or 5,5 degrees). This tests the P.M.V. microswitches. ‘The P.M.V. light will go out, eventually flashing, as the propeller regulates around P.M.V. microswitch. - Release the test button and the propeller goes into reverse. - The P.M.V. lamp comes on and the test is finished. IMPORTANT NOTE : e ~ If during this test, the propeller-pitch stops only at the P.P.M.V. setting value, namely 9 degrees, it is necessary to release the P.M.V. test button, bring back the pitch to starting position and stop the engine. ~ In this case, the P.M.V. microswitch is defective. F/ Advice in case of P.M.V. microswitch fault in flight - In this precise case, the pilot will not be able to reduce the Propeller pitch below the setting value of P.P.M.V. microswitch. ~ It is therefore necessary that the pilot cancels the feed to the P.M.V. security circuit in placing the selector ground/flight on ground. In this way, the propeller pitch can be brought to the value of the other engine for landing. We take the liberty to remind you that SAFT batteries are NICKEL~ CADMIUM batteries and that their mintenance is different fran the "Lead Batteries" maintenance, You will therefore find below some information given in the operating and maintenance manual ; that we think necessary to recall. ~ DEFINITION OF TRE BATTERIES ~ Nickel-Cadmium batteries, like all batteries, are normally rated by their nominal discharge voltage and their nominal capacity. Nickel-Cadmium cells have a nominal discharge voltage of 1.2 Volts. Therefore, the nominal battery voltage is 1.2 times the number of cells. Capacity is defined as the quantity of electricity, measured in ampere-hours, that the battery can deliver fron its completely charged state to its discharged state, The battery 1s considered to be discharged when its terminal voltage equals 1.0 Volt per cell times the number of cells (i.e., 20 Volts for a 20-cell battery). However, because the capacity depends on the current rate at which a battery is discharged, the discharge rate must be stated along with the ampere-hour capacity in order for the capacity rating to be meaningful. veel BUREAU OE ARS : 1 me ass @) - TEL 9241867 - TELEX 650347 USE A TARNOS 40220. This means that if the battery is discharged over 5 hours, it will have the stated capacity of 40 Ah. The discharge rate would be 8 amperes. Listing the capacity of 40 Ah without any qualifying discharge time would imply that the battery could be discharged at any rate, and the current multiplied by the time would equal 40 Ah. This is not true. The battery used in the example with a capacity of "40 Ah at the S-hour rate" could not deliver 40 amperes for one hour, or 20 amperes for two hours. At higher current drains, it would have less capacity. That same battery "at the one-hour rate" would have only a 34 Ah capacity. That is, with a 34 ampere current flow, it would reach the 1.0 V per cell average in one hour. All SAFT vented cell batteries are rated at the I-hour discharge rate. A SAFT type 4076, for example, discharged at 36 amperes will deliver 36 amperes for | hour before reaching the 1.0 V per cell average. At the S-hour rate, the capacity of the SAFT 4076 would be more than 40 Ah. In other words, if it were discharged at 8 amperes, it would provide that current flow for over 5 hours before its voltage dropped to the 1.0 V per cell average. Typical discharge curves for SAFT's type VP cells are given in figure IC. STATE OF CHARGE - Unlike lead-acid batteries, there is no way of determining the precise state of charge of nickel-cadmium batteries without discharging the battery at a known current rate, checking the time for the discharge and then calculating what the state of charge had been. Neither the specific gravity of the electrolyte, nor the terminal voltage of the battery or of its individual cells is an indication of the state of charge. Unlike lead-acid types, the electrolyte does not change its density or composition (hence specific gravity), with its state of charge. (The specific gravity of the electrolyte does change, however, with the addition or loss of water in the electrolyte solution. Since the potassium hydroxide has a higher density than water, the specific gravity will increase if water is lost and will decrease if too much water is added). Since terminal voltage will remain almost constant over a wide range of charge levels, its measurement will not provide a valid state-of- charge indication. Thus, the only positive method of determining state-of-charge is to discharge the battery at a fixed current flow and measure the time it takes for the voltage to drop to an average of 1.0 V per cell. The procedure is explained in Section 4.5.1. However, it is possible to determine the approximate state of charge. TURBOMECA BORDES - DETERMINING THE APPROXIMATE STATE OF CHARGE - It is possible to determine the approximate state of charge of the SAFT nickel-cadmium battery by discharging it at 0.2 Cl amperes (see Section 3.1 for explanation of 0.2 Cl) for about 10 seconds and then by measuring the terminal voltage with an accurate volt~ meter. If the reading is 1.25 V or more per cell, the battery is at least half charged. Ifthe cell voltage is less than 1.25 V, the battery should be recharged. - PLACING THE BATTERY IN SERVICE ~ Before the initial charge, remove the battery cover and Joosen the vent valve of each cell, using the plastic wrench provided in the SAFT tool kit. It is NOT recommended that the vent valve be removed during charging. Charge the battery at a constant current according to one of the procedures for a completely discharged battery as described in Section 3.2.1. During the first charge, the voltage at the battery terminals is not important. It is important, however, to keep the current constant. During the last half hour of charging, and without interrupting the flow of current, remove the vent valves and check the level of the electrolyte in each cell. If necessary, correct the level by adding distilled (or de-mineralized) water as instructed in Section 3.5, Electrolyte Level Adjustment. Replace the vent valves, but do not tighten them. NOTE : The electrolyte level changes considerably whith state of charge. Even with a fully charged cell, it varies according to the time elapsed between the end of the charge and the time of measure~ ment. No water should be added under any condition other than those described herein or under Section 3.5. When the charge cycle has been completed, tighten the vent valves with the plastic tool provided in the SAFT tool kit. Avoid overtigh~ tening, use only the upper knurled part of the special plastic Allen Head wrench ; the lower section of the wrench is used to loosen the vent valve. Replace the battery cover. = CHARGING AT CONSTANT CURRENT - - Completely Discharged Battery A/ Charge at 0.1 Cl amperes until the battery voltage reaches an average of 1.5 volts per cell (30 volts for a 20-cell battery). ‘Then continue charging at this same current rate for 4 additio- nal hours, When following this method, the total charge time must be at least 14 hours, but no more than 15 hours cee, TURBOMECA BORDES Suen? = B/ Charge at 0.5 Ci amperes for at least 2 hours. If after this time the battery voltage has not yet reached an average of 1,55 volts per cell (31 volts for a 20-cell battery), continue to charge at this current rate until the voltage rises to this level. However, do not charge at this rate for more than 2 hours and 30 minutes. Then charge at 0,1 Cl for 4 additional hours. C/ Charge at Cl amperes for at least 1 hour. If after this time the battery voltage has not yet reached an average of 1.57 Volts per cell (31.4 volts for a 20-cell battery), continue to charge at this current rate until the voltage rises to this level. However, do not charge at this rate for more than | hour and 15 minutes. Then charge at 0.1 Cl for 4 additional hours. - Partially Discharged Battery : If a charged battery has remained inactive for more than 2 weeks, and less than 2 months, before putting it into service, it should be charged at a rate of 0.1 Cl amps until the battery voltage reaches an average of 1.50 volts per cell (30 volts for a 20-cell battery). If a charged battery has remained inactive for more than 2 months, or if its exact state of charge is unknown, the battery must be discharged at a rate not exceeding 0.85 C1 amperes to a terminal voltage of I volt per cell average (20 volts for a 20-cell battery). It should then be recharged following one of the methods indicated. - Rapid Partial Charge : A/ Charge at 0.5 Cl amperes until the battery voltage reaches an average of 1.55 volts per cell (31 volts for 20-cell battery), but not for longer than 2 hours 15 minutes or B/ Charge at Cl amperes until the battery voltage reaches an average of 1.57 volts per cell (31.4 volts for a 20-cell battery), but for no longer than 1 hour 15 minutes. Either of these two methods will charge the battery to about 80 % of its capacity. In an emergency, the battery can be placed in the aircraft in this condition where it will be fully charged in flight. This charge should not be used during maintenance of the battery. We hope that the information above will be found useful, and we ask you to kindly refer to the manufacturer's documentation to obtain the best Tesults with the batteries. Please also note that the manufacturer issues a log-book and operating instructions with each battery. We remain at your disposal for any further information.
