An arithmetic series has first term 120 and common difference −3.

(a) Show that the 11th term in the series is 90. [1]

The first term and the 11th term of the arithmetic series form the first two
terms of a geometric series.

(c) Find the sum of the first 10 terms of this geometric series. Give your answer [3]
to 4 significant figures.

Question 7

Function 𝑓(𝑥) is defined as 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 + 𝑝𝑥 2 + 𝑞𝑥 − 10.

When 𝑓(𝑥) is divided by (𝑥 + 2) the remainder is 12. When 𝑓(𝑥) is divided


by (𝑥 − 3) the remainder is 32.

(a) Write down two equations in 𝑝 and 𝑞. [2]

(b) Solve your equations.

(a) A curve is given by 𝑦 = 𝑥 3 + ℎ𝑥 2 + 𝑘𝑥 − 125.

You are given there is a stationary value at 𝑥=5 which is a point of


inflexion.
