ASSIGNMENT III: Structural Design of Masonry Structures to EC6

QUESTION 1
(All Equations, Tables and Charts MUST be referenced and reproduced in your report)

A reinforced concrete roof slab is supported on two single-leaf walls, as shown in Figure below,
determine the minimum normalised compressive strength of the units, fb.

• Group1 clay masonry unit and M4 general purpose mortar

• Manufacturing control of the units is Category II and the execution control is Class 1
• Ignore the weight of wall

QUESTION 2
(All Equations, Tables and Charts should be referenced and reproduced in your report)

The cladding panel shown in Figure below is supported by columns A, B and C vertically, and by a
strip foundation at the bottom, and by the beam AB at the top-lef (while the top-right edge between
columns B and C is free).
The panel consists of brick masonry, 215 mm thick, made of:
• Clay units of group 2, having a water absorption of 12%;
• M6 general-purpose mortar.
Assuming:
• 20 kN/m3 for the laid density of the brickwork;
• Class 2 of execution control;
• Category II of attestation of conformity (i.e. manufacturing level of confidence),

(a) calculate the ultimate horizontal wind pressure wEd that the panel may withstand according
to EC6 and its UK NA.

(b) What would the ultimate horizontal wind pressure be if the internal column B and the top
beam AB were removed?
