‫‪Prophetic Stories for Modern Age‬‬

‫‪Divine Help through Pious Deeds:‬‬

‫وعن أبي عبد الرحمن عبد اهلل بن عمر بن الخطاب‪ ،‬رضي اهلل عنهما قال‪ :‬سمعت رسول اهلل صلى‬
‫اهلل عليه وسلم يقول‪ :‬انطلق ثالثة نرف ممن كان قبلكم حتي آواهم المبيت إلى غار فدخلوه‪،‬‬
‫فانحدرت صرخة من الجبل فسدت عليهم الغار‪ ،‬فقالوا‪ :‬إنه ال ينجيكم من هذه الصرخة إال أن‬
‫تدعوا اهلل بصالح أعمالكم‪ .‬قال رجل منهم‪ :‬اللهم كان لي أبوان شيخان كبيران‪ ،‬وكنت ال أغبق‬
‫قبلهما أه ًال وال ما ًال‪ .‬فنأى بى طلب الشجر يوم ًا فلم أرح عليهما حتي ناما فحلبت لهما غبوقهما‬
‫فوجدتهما نائمين فركهت أن أوقظهما وأن أغبق قبلهما أه ًال أو ماالً‪ ،‬فلبثت‪ -‬والقدح على‬
‫يدى‪ -‬أنتظر استيقاظهما حتي برق الفجر والصبية يتضاغون عند قدمى‪ -‬فاستيقظا فرشبا‬
‫غبوقهما‪ .‬اللهم إن كنت فعلت ذلك ابتغاء وجهك فرفج عنا ما نحن فيه من هذه الصرخة‪،‬‬
‫فانرفجت شيئ ًا ال يستطيعون الرخوج منه‪ .‬قال اآلرخ‪ :‬اللهم إنه كانت لي ابنة عم كانت أحب‬
‫الناس إ ّلى وفى رواية‪ :‬كنت أحبها كأشد ما يحب الرجال النساء‪ ،‬فأردتها على نفسها فامتنعت‬
‫ألمت بها سنة من السنين فجاءتني فأعطيتها عرشين ومائة دينار على أن تخلى بيني‬
‫مني حتي ّ‬
‫وبين نفسها ففعلت‪ ،‬حتي إذا قدرت عليها وفى رواية‪ :‬فلما قعدت بين رجليها‪ ،‬قالت‪ :‬اتق‬
‫اهلل وال تفض الخاتم إال بحقه‪ ،‬فانرصفت عنها وهى أحب الناس إلى وتركت الذهب الذى‬
‫أعطيتها‪ ،‬اللهم إن كنت فعلت ذلك ابتغاء وجهك فارفج عنا ما نحن فيه‪ ،‬فانرفجت الصرخة‬
‫غير أنهم ال يستطيعون الرخوج منها‪ .‬وقال الثالث‪ :‬اللهم استأجرت أجراء وأعطيتهم أجرهم غير‬
:‫ فجاءنى بعد حين فقال‬،‫ فثمرت أجره حتي كثرت منه األموال‬،‫رجل واحد ترك الذى له وذهب‬
:‫ فقال‬.‫ من اإلبل والبرق والغنم والرقيق‬:‫ كل ما ترى من أجرك‬:‫ فقلت‬،‫يا عبد اهلل أ ّد إلى أجرى‬
،‫ فأخذه كله فاستاقه فلم يترك منه شيئ ًا‬،‫ ال أستهزئ بك‬:‫يا عبد اهلل ال تستهزئ بى! فقلت‬
‫ فانرفجت الصرخة فرخجوا‬،‫كنت فعلت ذلك ابتغاء وجهك فارفج عنا ما نحن فيه‬
ُ ‫اللهم إن‬
.))‫يمشون ((متفق عليه‬

Sayyiduna 'Abdullah bin 'Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be


pleased with them) narrated that:
He heard Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬as saying: "Three men,
amongst those who came before you, set out until night came
and they reached a cave, so they entered it. A rock fell down
from the mountain and blocked the entrance of the cave. They
said: 'Nothing will save you from this unless you supplicate to
Allah by virtue of a righteous deed you have done.'
Thereupon, one of them said: 'O Allah! I had parents who were
old, and I used to offer them milk before any of my children or
slaves. One day, I went far away in search of grazing and could
not come back until they had slept. When I milked as usual
and brought the drink I found them both asleep. I hated to
disturb them and also disliked to give milk to my children
before them. My children were crying out of hunger at my feet
but I awaited with the bowl in my hand for them to wake up.
When they awoke at dawn, they drank milk. O Allah! If I did so
to seek Your Pleasure, then deliver us from the distress
caused by the rock'. The rock moved slightly but they were
unable to escape.
The next said: 'O Allah! I had a cousin whom I loved more than
any one else (in another version he said: as a man can love a
woman). I wanted to have sexual intercourse with her but she
refused. Hard pressed in a year of famine, she approached
me. I gave her one hundred and twenty dinars on condition
that she would yield herself to me. She agreed and when we
got together (for sexual intercourse), she said: Fear Allah and
do not break the seal unlawfully. I moved away from her in
spite of the fact that I loved her most passionately; and I let
her keep the money I had given her. O Allah! If I did that to seek
Your Pleasure, then, remove the distress in which we are.' The
rock moved aside a bit further but they were still unable to get
out.
The third one said: 'O Allah! I hired some labourers and paid
them their wages except one of them departed without taking
his due. I invested his money in business and the business
prospered greatly. After a long time, he came to me and said:
O slave of Allah! Pay me my dues. I said: All that you see is
yours - camels, cattle, goats and slaves. He said: O slave of
Allah! Do not mock at me. I assured him that I was not joking.
So he took all the things and went away. He spared nothing. O
Allah! If I did so seeking Your Pleasure, then relieve us of our
distress.' The rock moved aside and they got out walking
freely".
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Lessons:
1. To present a pious deed or action in the Divine Court of
the Allah Almighty is a means of acceptance of ones
Du’a.
2. We should remember to make Du’a to Allah Almighty
even when we are in a comfortable state and not only
when we are in a difficult state. We should also never
lose hope in the Divine Mercy of the Allah Almighty.
3. Sincerity is a very noble and great trait as was proven
from the story of the three travellers in the cave.
4. Serving one’s parents is a means of success in both
worlds.
5. One should give one’s parents the highest position
compared to one’s wife, children and other relatives.
6. As much as we serve our parents, we can never truly
repay them.
7. To refrain from committing a sin even though one has the
power to sin simply because one has fear for Allah
Almighty is a very noble and great trait.
8. If one has the real wish to refrain from sin, Allah Almighty
would create means for that person to protect himself
from that sin.
9. Sincere deeds carry immediate effect and can even turn
solid rock into candle.
10. Returning a trust is a means of removing personal
calamity. One should make sure that one pays the
worker on time and properly. If the person has not come
to collect his wages, one should make sure that this is
kept aside so that it could be eventually given back to the
person.
11. To be kind and courteous to a poor person or worker
is indeed a very great and noble deed.

Hadrat Sayyiduna abu Abdur Rahman Abdullah bin ‘Umar bin


Khattab – may Allah be pleased with them – narrates that:
I heard Sayyiduna Rasoolullah – may Allah’s peace and
blessings be upon him – explain that, “In the past, three
people were travelling some where and when it became dark,
they sought refuge in a cave. Suddenly, a rock fell in front of
the cave entrance (and they were imprisoned inside). They
decided that there was only one way out of this and that they
should present (one of) their good deeds as a Wasila and
make Du’a in the Court of the Allah Almighty.
Consequently, one of them prayed, “O Allah! My parents have
become very old. Before giving them milk, I do not even feed
(this milk) to my own children or my own family and not even
my servants. (In other words, he always made sure that the
first people to drink this milk were his parents). One day, I went
out quiet far in search of wood and when I returned, my
parents had fallen asleep. When I went near them, (they were
in deep sleep). I did not think it proper to disturb them and I
also did not think it proper to give any member of my family
that milk before them. Even though my little children, out of
hunger, kept shaking my leg. I continued to stand next to my
parents (bed) with the bowl of milk. When morning arrived, I
gave them this bowl of milk to drink. O Allah! If I have done this
for the sake of Your Divine Pleasure, save us from this
calamity”. After this, the rock moved a little but not so much
(further) that they could leave the cave.
The second person then made Du’a, “O Allah! The daughter of
my uncle was the most beloved to me.”
In another narration, it is mentioned that this affection (which
he had) was the same affection which a male would have
towards a female. “When I intended to perform a sinful act
with her, she refused. (After a while) they suffered from severe
drought and she came to me for help. I (informed) her that I
would give her one hundred and twenty Dinaars on condition
that she satisfied my desire. She was helpless and acceded to
this. When I was alone with her and she was under my control,
she then cried out, ‘Fear Allah Almighty and do not break an
unjust Mehr,’ (meaning that I should refrain from this unjust
act). When I heard this, I left her alone and decided to refrain
from this evil deed even though I had an extreme desire for her.
I did not even take back the Dinaars which I had given her. O
Allah! If I have done this only for Your Divine Pleasure, then
save us from this calamity.” The rock moved a little but not as
much that they could leave the cave.
The third person then said, “O Allah, I used a few labourers to
do work and paid all of them except one who had already left
(before I could pay him). I used this same money in some
business and this money continued to increase. After a while,
he returned and asked me, ‘O slave of Allah! Please give me
my wages.’ I replied, ‘These camels, these cows, these goats
and these servants which you see, all of this belongs to you.’
He asked me whether I was joking and I said no. He then
returned with all of this and did not leave a single thing behind.
O Allah! If this action of mine was for the sake of Your Divine
Pleasure, then save us from this calamity.” The rock suddenly
moved away and they came out of the cave and continued to
where they were going. (Bukhari; Muslim Shareef)
To make Du’a using a pious deed as Wasila
Allama ibn Battaal – may Allah have mercy on him – explains
that, “If a person uses his good and pious deed as a Wasila
with sincere intention which he has performed strictly for the
Divine Pleasure of Allah Almighty, there is (great) hope that his
Du’a would be accepted. This is clearly seen in this Hadith
Shareef. Hence, pious and good deeds performed for the
Pleasure of Allah Almighty can certainly be used as a Wasila.”
(Sharah Bukhari Shareef)
Allama Abu Zakariyah bin Sharaf Nawawi – may Allah have
mercy on him – explains that, “In times of difficulty, sadness
and when one wishes for rain, (at these times), it is considered
as Mustahab that one uses his pious deeds as a Wasila. This
was done by the people in the cave and their Du’a was
accepted.”
This incident has been explained by the Holy Prophet – may
Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – as a sign of praise
for these people in the cave and as a mark of excellence for
them. It also explains the excellence of serving one’s parents,
to save oneself from a Haraam act even though one has the
power at that moment to perform this Haraam act and the
importance of returning a trust. It also proves that one needs
to be kind and the permissibility of Ijaarah as an instrument in
Islamic business. (Where one uses the finance of another). In
this Hadith Shareef, the miracle of the Saints are proven and
this is the true belief of the people of truth. (Sharah Muslim)
Allama Badrudeen Aini – may Allah have mercy on him –
further explains that:
1. To present the stories of previous people and to use some
of their pious stories, deeds and actions as a source of
inspiration is permissible. This was clearly shown by the
Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon
him – when he explained this incident.
2. To spend money in the upkeep of one’s parents, wife and
children is Waajib. They are more deserving than any
other family members.
3. It is considered as Mustahab to use one’s pious deeds
and actions in the Court of the Allah Almighty as a Wasila
or medium. This is also done while asking for rain.
4. If a person becomes guilty of committing a sin and then
busies himself with performing good deeds, it is hoped
that he would be forgiven.
5. If a person decides to commit a sin and then desists from
committing this sin with the sincere intention of pleasing
the Allah Almighty, he would be given immense reward.
(Umdatul Qari)
Three acts are part of Huququl Ibaad (or rights of other
people)
1. To be kind to one’s parents.
2. To protect oneself from committing adultery against an
innocent person even though one may have the power to
do so.
3. To fulfil the rights of one’s workers and labourers. To pay
them on time and not to take undue advantage over them.

Advice on being kind to ones parents


In Surah Asraa, verses 23,24, Allah Almighty declares:

‫ا ِ اما َي ْبلُ َغنا ع ِ ْن َد َك ا ْل ِكب َ َر‬-‫َو َق ٰضي َربُّ َك َا اال َت ْعبُ ُد ْۤوا ا ِ ا ۤال اِياا ُه َو بِا ْل َوال ِ َديْ ِن ا ِ ْح َسانًا‬
)23(‫َكيْ ًما‬ ِ َ ‫ُف او َال َت ْن َه ْره َُما َو ُق ْل ال ُه َما َق ْو ًال‬
ٍّ ّ ‫اَ َح ُده َُم ۤا اَ ْو كِل ٰ ُه َما ف ََال َت ُق ْل ال ُه َم ۤا ا‬

And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but
Him, and be kind to (your) parents; if one or both of
them reach old age in your presence, then do not even
say “Uff!” to them, and do not scold them, and speak to
them with courteous words.
)24(‫الذلِّ ِم َن ال ار ْح َم ِة َو ُق ْل ار ِّب ْار َح ْم ُه َما َك َما َربا ٰينِ ْي َصغِي ْ ًراﭤ‬ َ ‫َو ا ْخ ِف ْض َل ُه َما َج َن‬
ُّ ‫اح‬

And lower your wing of humility to them out of affection


and say, “O my Lord! Have mercy on them (both) as
they raised me when I was a child.”
Pertaining to these verses, Hadrat Sadrul Afaadil, Hadrat
Moulana Na’eemudeen Muradabadi – may Allah’s mercy be
upon him – explains that, “When your parents become weak
and old and they start to develop weakness in their joints and
bones, as you were helpless in front of them when you were
little, in the same manner they are now with you as you were
with them when little. At that time, never utter any words to
them which would hurt their feelings. Do no scold them and
do not speak in a rough manner. In fact you should speak to
them in such a manner as a servant speaks to his master.
Such is the amount of respect you should have. If you have to
spend on them, do not be stingy and spend your best wealth
on them. No matter how much of service you are to them, you
will never be able to fulfil the rights of your parents over you.
You should in fact make Du’a that since you cannot repay
them, Allah Almighty should shower His choicest blessing
upon them for this favour which they have done on you.”
Explaining the rights of ones parents under verse 83 of Surah
Baqarah, the eminent scholar explains that:
1. Love them with sincere affection.
2. Treat them with respect wherever they sit or awake.
3. Use words of respect when addressing or speaking to
them.
4. Strive to make them happy and joyous.
5. Spend your best and most valuable wealth on them.
6. Make sure that you fulfil their Waseeyat after they pass
away.
7. Perform Fatiha, Esaale Thawaab, recite the Qur’an on
their behalf regularly and give charity in their name
regularly.
8. Continue to make Du’a for them and visit their grave at
least once a week. If you feel that they are misled or
misguided on certain worldly or religious issue talk to
them and advise them in the most kind manner.

The reward for one complete Hajj


The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon
him – has declared that, “When a child looks at his parents
with mercy, for every time he looks (with mercy), Allah
Almighty rewards him with the reward of one complete and
accepted Hajj (Hajj-e-Mabrur)”. The blessed companions
asked, “Even if he sees them a hundred times a day (in this
manner)?” The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and
blessings be upon him – replied, “Allah Almighty is the
Greatest and the Most Pure.” (Shu’abul Imaan)

The injured finger of Hadrat Bayazid Bustami – may Allah


have mercy on him!
Hadrat Sayyiduna Bayazid Bustami – may Allah have mercy on
him – narrates that, “One extremely cold evening, my mother
asked me for water. When I returned with the water container,
she was already sleeping. I did not consider it proper to
disturb her and holding the water container, I decided to stand
next to her so that when she awoke I could give her the water.
I stood there quite long, in fact so long that some water fell on
my finger and turned into ice.
“When she finally awoke, I presented the water to her,
however, since my finger was stuck to the container. Due to
the ice, the skin came off and blood began to drip (from this
wound). When I mother asked what had happened, I
explained everything to her, after which she raised her hands
and made Du’a, ‘O Allah! I am pleased with him, You also be
pleased with him.’” (Nuzhatul Majaalis)
The Barakah of this Du’a has become apparent to the entire
world in the form of Hadrat Bayazid Bustami – may Allah have
mercy on him. There is hardly a book written on Sufism or any
other spiritual matter where the blessed name of Hadrat
Bayazid Bustami – may Allah have mercy on him – is not
mentioned.

To refrain from sin even though one has the power to


commit it, is indeed a meritorious act!
Highlighting the status of those people who protect
themselves from adultery and protect their private parts, Allah
Almighty declares in Surah Mo’mineen, verse 5 that:

ُ ُ ِ ‫َو اال ِذيْ َن ھُ ْم ل‬


‫رف ْو ِجہِ ْم َحافِظ ُْون‬
and those who protect their chastity,

In Surah Ar Rahman, verse 46, Allah Almighty declares:

‫اف َم َق َام َربِّ ٖہ َج انتٰ ِن‬


َ ‫َو ل ِ َم ْن َخ‬

And there are two paradises for the one who fears
standing before His Lord.
In Surah Naazi’aat, verse 40, 41, Allah Almighty declares that:

)40(‫اف َم َق َام َر ِّب ٖه َو ن َ َهى ال انف َْس َع ِن ا ْل َه ٰوى‬


َ ‫َو َا اما َم ْن َخ‬

As for he who feared standing before his Lord and


restrained the carnal self from ˹against˺ base desires;
)41(‫َفا ِ ان ا ْل َج ان َة ه ِ َي ا ْل َماْ ٰوىﭤ‬

indeed Paradise is his abode.

Allah Almighty clearly commands us to protect our gaze and


our private parts, in Surah Nur, verses 30.31, He declares
that:

َ ِ ‫ُق ْل ِّلل ُْم ْو ِمنِي ْ َن َي ُغ ُّض ْوا ِم ْن اَبْ َصارِھِ ْم َو َي ْح َفظ ُْوا رفُ ُ ْو َج ُھمط ذٰل‬
َ ‫ک اَ ْزک ٰي َل ُھ ْم ط ا ِ ان ا‬
‫هلل َخبِي ْ ٌر‬
‫ب ِ َما َي ْص َن ُع ْو َن َو ُق ْل ِّلل ُْم ْو ِم ٰنتِ َي ْغ ُض ْض َن ِم ْن اَ ْب َصارِ ھِنا َو َي ْحفَظْ َن رفُ ُ ْو َج ُھنا‬
Command the Muslim men to lower their gaze and
protect their concealed parts. This is purer for them—
Allah is aware of their deeds. Command the Muslim
women to lower their gaze, and protect their chastity.

In these verses, the vision and gaze of people are being


explained and highlighted. There is no doubt that everything
starts when one sees something. Therefore, the cause of this
sin is being restricted so that it goes no further. Once you
lower your gaze, you cannot be overtaken by desire and when
there is no desire, there is no encouragement to commit sin.
An arrow of the Satan steeped in poison!
Hadrat Sayyiduna ibn Masud – may Allah be pleased with him
– narrates from the Holy Prophet, – may Allah’s peace and
blessings be upon him – who reports the Words of Allah
Almighty Who has declared that, “An evil gaze is an arrow of
the Satan which is steeped in poison. Whosoever refrains
from this evil gaze due to his fear for Me, I will bestow upon
him such Imaan (faith), whose sweetness he will feel in his
heart.” (Mo’jim Kabeer)
This same evil gaze robbed a Mu’azzin of his faith!
It is reported that there was once a Mu’azzin who had given
Azaan for forty years. Once while giving Azaan, his eyes fell
upon a pretty lady who happened to be a Christian. He then
felt completely desirous for her and lost all his common
sense. He left the Azaan and asked the lady to marry him. She
replied that her Mehr would indeed be very heavy on him.
When he asked what Mehr she wanted, she replied that he
would have to become a Christian. He agreed to this and
accepted Christianity. She also advised him that her father
was on the lower floor of the house and that he should
approach her father to marry her. As he was walking down the
stairs of the house, he fell and died and departed from this
world in the state of kufr.” (Ar Roudul Faa’iq)
Three amazing eyes!
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon
him – has stated that three eyes would never see the fire of
Hell.
1. The eyes (which stood) as look out in the Path of Allah.
2. The eyes which shed tears in fear of Almighty Allah.
3. The eyes which stopped from seeing those things which
Allah Almighty had made Haraam. (Mo’jim Kabeer)
How to achieve joy in Ibadah (worship)?

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Umaamah – may Allah be pleased with


him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and
blessings be upon him – has declared that, “When the gaze of
a Muslim falls on a pretty woman and he lowers his gaze, Allah
Almighty will instil joy in his heart for (acts) of Ibadah
(worship).” (Musnad Imam Ahmed)
A guarantee of Jannah from the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s
peace and blessings be upon him
Hadrat Sayyiduna Ubaadah bin Thaamit – may Allah be
pleased with him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may
Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – has declared that,
“Whosoever can give me a guarantee of six things, I will give
him a guarantee of (entering) Jannah. They are:
1. When he speaks, he should speak the truth.
2. When he promises, he should keep his promise.
3. When a trust is placed with you, you should return it.
4. Protect your private parts.
5. Lower your gaze.
6. Refrain your hands (meaning do not cause trouble for
others). (Mustadrak – Haakim)
How easy is it for a women to enter Jannah!
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with
him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and
blessings be upon him – has declared that, “When a female
performs her five Salaah, protects her private parts and obeys
her husband, she may enter Jannah through whichever door
she wishes.” (Al Ihsaan)
He will enjoy the shadow of the Divine Throne (Arsh)!
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah – may Allah be pleased with
him – narrates that the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and
blessings be upon him – has declared that, “There are seven
people who will be blessed by the Allah Almighty with being
under the Shadow of the Divine Arsh at that time when
besides the shadow of the Arsh, no other shadow will exist.”
He then mentioned these seven people and (among them), he
also mentioned that person who will be invited by a beautiful
female with influence (and power) to commit a sin (in other
words adultery) and he will reply, “I fear my Creator!” (Bukhari
Shareef)
Kifli has been forgiven!
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Abdur Rahman bin ‘Umar – may Allah
be pleased with them – explains that if he did not hear this
Hadith Shareef nearly seven times from the Holy Prophet –
may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – he would not
have mentioned it. However, he admits that he heard this
Hadith Shareef even more times than this.
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon
him – explains that, “There was once a person among the Bani
Israel named Kifli who was a great sinner. Once a helpless
female asked him for some money and he gave her one
hundred Dinaars with the condition that she commits a sin
with him. However, when he approached this female, she
began to tremble severely and also cried out. When he asked
her why she was crying, she replied, ‘I have never done this
before and today this desperation has made me helpless.’
“When he heard this, Kifli moved away from this female and
declared, ‘If this is your state because of the fear you have for
the Allah Almighty, then I am more entitled than you to fear
Him. Leave and whatever money I have given you, it belongs
to you and I swear by Allah that after this, I will never disobey
my Lord.’
“It so happened that he passed away that same night. In the
morning, the people found a notice on his door which read,
‘Without doubt, Almighty Allah has forgiven Kifli.’ The people
were very surprised when they saw this.” (Tirmidi Shareef)
An extremely intelligent female
It is said that once a farmer fell desirous towards the wife of
one of his workers. He then made some excuse to send that
worker away for the day and invited this lady to his house.
When she came, he instructed her to close all the doors. After
she did this, he asked her whether all the doors had been
closed and she replied, “Yes, all the doors have been closed,
however, there is one door which I could not close and which
still remains open”. He asked her which door that was and she
replied, “It is the door between us and the Creator, Allah
Almighty”. When he heard this reply, it was like a lightning had
hit him. He immediately made Taubah and promised that he
will never do this again. (Oyunul Hikaayah)
He saw Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him – his grave!
Hadrat Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam – may
Allah’s mercy be upon him – narrates: Hadrat Sayyiduna Atta
bin Yasaar and Hadrat Sayyiduna Sulayman bin Yasaar – may
Allah’s mercy be upon them – with a few companions were on
a journey to perform the Hajj. At a place called “Abwa” the
caravan stopped and all the travellers left to busy themselves
with their own activities. However, Sayyiduna Ataa bin
Yasaar – may Allah’s mercy be upon him – remained behind
and began to perform his Salaah near the goods which were
placed nearby. A few minutes later, a very beautiful female
appeared from a nearby village and invited him to commit
adultery with her. However, he instructed her to go away, yet
this female continued to force him and he kept chasing her
away.
He then began to weep and when she saw his sincere humility
and honesty, she also began to weep with him. At that
moment, Hadrat Sayyiduna Sulayman bin Yasaar – may
Allah’s mercy be upon him – also arrived and when he saw
them weeping, he also began to weep! And surprisingly, even
the returning travellers began to weep when they say this. The
female then returned to her village and everyone busied
themselves with their own preparations. Due to the immense
awe and power which was seen in the features of Hadrat
Sayyiduna Ataa bin Yasaar – may Allah’s mercy be upon him
– no one dared question him about what had happened and
why he was weeping.”
Hadrat Sayyiduna Sulayman bin Yasaar – may Allah’s mercy
be upon him – further narrates:
One day I gathered some strength and approached him and
asked, “O my brother! What was the (background story)
behind that female on that day?” He replied, “I will relate the
whole story to you but on condition, you will never reveal this
to anyone as long as I am alive!”
He then revealed that, “On the same night, I saw Nabi Yusuf
– peace be upon him – in a dream and when I saw him, I began
to weep.” Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him – asked me the
reason for weeping and I explained, “O Prophet of Allah! My
parents be sacrificed for you. I am weeping when I think of the
time you were imprisoned, the time when you were tragically
separated from your father, Nabi Yaqub – peace be upon him,
and the time when you were tested by the wife of the advisor
of Egypt. I am also surprised at the effort you made to remain
pure, when you displayed immense patience and showed
gratitude in the (court) of the Allah Almighty (after all of this).”
After listening to me, Nabi Yusuf – peace be upon him –
replied, “Are you not surprised by the person who was
confronted by the incident of a lady from a village.” When, I
heard this, I immediately understood to which incident he was
indicating to.”
It is further said that Hadrat Sayyiduna Sulayman bin Yasaar –
may Allah’s mercy be upon him – never revealed this incident
to anyone while Hadrat Sayyiduna Ataa bin Yasaar – may
Allah’s mercy be upon him – was alive. However, when he
passed away, this incident was revealed to his family and it
became famous around the village thereafter. (Oyunul
Hikaayah)
The Barakah (blessing) of a Wasila or medium!
If a Muslim presents one of his sincere and pious deeds as a
Wasila in the Divine Court of the Allah Almighty and makes
Du’a, there is a high probability that his Du’a would be
accepted. We see from the story of the three people in the
cave who each presented his own good deed as a Wasila
while making Du’a. In like manner, we can also use the sincere
and pious deeds of the special slaves of the Allah Almighty as
a Wasila when we make Du’a.
Since there are various Hadith Shareef which explains the
idea of “Wasila”, hence, it is important that we explain what
this is. “Wasila” means to achieve the Barakah of mentioning
the special slaves of the Allah Almighty in His Divine Court and
their actions because mentioning them in His Court, is a
source of Divine Mercy. There is no doubt that the special
servants of the Allah Almighty have a special place in His
Divine Court and when we use their names in our Du’a, there
is a greater chance of our Du’a being accepted. (Al Aqaa’id wal
Masaa’il)
Imam Taqeeudeen Subki Shafi – may Allah’s mercy be upon
him – explains that, “A person in need should use the status
and the Barakah of the position of the Holy Prophet – may
Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in the Court of the
Allah Almighty (when seeking anything). This is permissible in
all conditions. In other words, this was permissible before his
blessed birth, while he was in this world and even after he has
left this world. In all conditions and state, there are (many)
Ahadith which proves the permissibility of this”. (Shifa us
Siqaam)
The blessed name of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace
and blessings be upon him – on the Divine Throne!
It is reported that when Nabi Adam – peace be upon him –
made Du’a to the Allah Almighty, he used the name of the Holy
Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – as
Wasila. When the Allah Almighty asked where he had seen
this, he replied that he had seen this blessed name written on
the Divine Throne.
In other words, he had seen the following words written on the
Divine Throne which was – “There is no deity (worthy of
worship) except Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”
– and because of this, he understood that this was a special
creation of the Allah Almighty whose name was recorded next
to the Divine Name of the Allah Almighty. The Allah Almighty
then declared, “O Adam! You have spoken the truth! Without
doubt, Muhammad is the most closest to me than any other
creation and since you have made Du’a to Me seeking
forgiveness using the truth of his name, therefore, I have
forgiven you and if Muhammad did not exist, I would not have
created even you.” (Mustadrak – Haakim)
Revelation to Nabi ‘Isa – peace be upon him
It is mentioned that the Allah Almighty sent revelation to Nabi
‘Isa – peace be upon him , “O ‘Isa! Bring faith on Muhammad –
may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and inform
your Ummah that whosoever meets him, they should certainly
believe in him. If Muhammad did not exist, I would not have
created Adam. If he did not exist, I would not have created
Paradise and Hell. I created the Throne on water and it began
to tremble and when “La ilaaha illal laahu Muohammadur
Rasoolullah” appeared on it, it stopped
trembling.” (Mustadrak -Haakim)
Using the Wasila of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace
and blessings be upon him – in his lifetime!
Imam Taqeeudeen Subki Shafi – may Allah have mercy on
him – explains, “Using the Wasila of the Holy Prophet – may
Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – was permissible
during his life time in this world. Sufficient proof for this is that
narration in which the eyes of a certain person regained its
vision.” (Shifa us Siqaam)
His eyes regained its vision
Hadrat Sayyiduna Uthman bin Hunaif – may Allah be pleased
with him – narrates that a blind companion approached the
Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him
– and pleaded, “O Prophet of Allah! Please make Du’a to Allah
Almighty that he removes the veil from my eyes (so that I may
see clearly)”.
The Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon
him – replied, “If you wish, I can make Du’a for you and if you
wish, you can have patience and patience is better for you”.
He then requested that Du’a be made for him. The Holy
Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – then
asked him to make proper Wudu, and make Du’a in the
following words:
“O Allah! I implore you and I turn to You through the Wasila of
the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon
him. O Prophet of Allah! I turn to Allah Almighty through your
Wasila for this need so that this need is granted. O Allah!
Accept the intercession of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s
peace and blessings be upon him – on my behalf”.
The narrator further explains that, “By Allah! Only a few
moments had passed when that person arrived and he was
writing in such a manner as if he had never been blind”.

The Prophet’s special Du’a for Sayyidah Fatimah binte
Asad – may Allah be pleased with her!
It is reported that when the blessed mother of the Hadrat
Sayyiduna Ali – may Allah be pleased with him – passed away,
then the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be
upon him – made a special Du’a for her in the following words,
“O Allah! Please forgive my mother Fatimah binte Asad – may
Allah be pleased with her. And through me and through the
truth of the previous Prophets (using this Wasila) please make
her grave expansive.” (Mo’jim Kabeer)
Using the Awliya as Wasila
Hadrat Imam Taqeeudeen Subki Shafi – may Allah’s mercy be
upon him – explains that, “As it is permissible to use the
blessed personality of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace
and blessings be upon him – as a Wasila, in like manner, it is
permissible to use the Wasila of those blessed people who
have a special connection with the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s
peace and blessings be upon him.” (Shifa us Siqaam)
Hadrat ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – used the
Prophets uncle as a Wasila
Imam Mohammed bin Ismail Bukhaari – may Allah’s mercy be
upon him – narrates that when there was severe drought,
Hadrat ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – used to make
Du’a to the Allah Almighty using the Wasila of Hadrat
Sayyiduna Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him. After a few
moments, it used to rain! (Bukhaari Shareef)
Question: If Hadrat ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him
– thought it permissible to use the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s
peace and blessings be upon him – as a Wasila, why did he
use the Prophet’s uncle’s name instead?
Answer: Hadrat ‘Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – was
merely proving to us that besides the Holy Prophet – may
Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – one can also use
other pious peoples name as a Wasila and that there is no
harm in this. It must also be remembered that there have been
many other instances where people used the blessed name
of the Holy Prophet – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon
him – as a Wasila.

Obstacles on the path of Repentance:

ِ ‫فَا ْخ َت َص َم ْت ف ِيهِ َمالَئ ِ َك ُة ال ار ْح َم ِة َو َمالَئ ِ َك ُة ال َْع َذ‬
ُ ِ ‫ فَأ َ َتاه ُْم َمل ٌَك فِي ُص َورة ِآ َدم ٍِّّي َف َج َعلُو ُه بَ ْي َن ُه ْم َف َقا َل ق‬. ‫اب إِن ا ُه ل َْم َي ْع َم ْل َخي ْ ًرا ق َُّط‬
‫يسوا َما بَي ْ َن األَ ْر َضي ْ ِن َفإِل َى‬ ِ ‫َمالَئ ِ َك ُة ال َْع َذ‬
‫ قَا َل َق َتا َدةُ َف َقا َل ا ْل َح َس ُن‬. ‫ض االتِي أَ َرا َد َف َق َب َض ْت ُه َمالَئ ِ َك ُة ال ار ْح َم ِة‬
ِ ‫ َف َقا ُسو ُه ف ََو َج ُدو ُه أَ ْدنَى إلِ َى األَ ْر‬. ‫ان أَ ْدنَى َف ُه َو َل ُه‬
َ َ ‫أَياتِه ِ َما ك‬
.ِ ‫َُك َل َنا أَن ا ُه َل اما أَ َتا ُه ال َْم ْوتُ نَأَى بِ َص ْدرِه‬َ ِ‫ذ‬
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported Allah's Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬as saying:

There was a person before you who had killed ninety-nine persons
and then made an inquiry about the learned persons of the world
(who could show him the way to salvation). He was directed to a
monk.
He came to him and told him that he had killed ninety-nine persons
and asked him whether there was any scope for his repentance to be
accepted. He said: No. He killed him also and thus completed one
hundred.
He then asked about the learned persons of the earth and he was
directed to a scholar, and he told him that he had killed one hundred
persons and asked him whether there was any scope for his
repentance to be accepted. He said: Yes; what stands between you
and the repentance? You better go to such and such land; there are
people devoted to prayer and worship and you also worship along
with them and do not come to the land of yours since it was an evil
land (for you).
So he went away and he had hardly covered half the distance when
death came to him and there was a dispute between the angels of
mercy and the angels of punishment.
The angels of mercy said: This man has come as a repentant (taa’ib)
and remorseful to Allah and the angels of punishment said: He has
done no good at all. Then there came another angel in the form of a
human being in order to decide between them. He said: You measure
the land to which he has drawn near. They measured it and found him
nearer to the land where he intended to go (the land of piety), and so
the angels of mercy took possession of it.
Sayyiduna Qatadah said that Sayyiduna Hasan told him: it was said
to them that as death approached him, he crawled upon his chest
(and managed) to slip in the land of mercy.

Lessons:
1. Determination to reform
He was sincere in his intention to repent and reform after having committed
so many murders and sins, about which the beloved Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬says:

ِ ‫ إن ّ َما األَ ْع َما ُل بال ِّن ّيا‬: ‫ َسمِ ْع ُت َر ُس ْو َل اهللِ َي ُق ْو ُل‬: ‫ َقا َل‬،‫اب َرض َِي اهللُ َع ْن ُہ‬
‫ َوإِن ا َما‬،‫ت‬ ِ ‫َع ْن عُ َم َر بْ ِن ا ْل َخ اط‬
‫ َو َم ْن كَان َ ْت‬،‫ فَه ِ ْج َرتُ ٗه إل َى اهللِ َو َر ُس ْول ِ ٖه‬،‫ ف ََم ْن كَان َ ْت هِ ْج َرتُ ٗه إل َى اهلل َو َر ُس ْول ِ ٖه‬،‫لِكُلِّ امر ِ ٍّئ َما ن َ ٰوى‬
‫ فَه ِ ْج َرتُ ُه إلِٰى َما َها َج َر إِل َْيه‬،‫هِ ْج َرتُ ُه ل ِ ُدن ْ َيا ي ُِص ْيبُ َها أَ ْو ا ِ ْم َرأَة ٍّ َي ْن َك ُح َها‬
Hazrat Umar bin Al-Khattab ‫ رضی ہللا عنہ‬is reported to have said: The
Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬stated, “The deeds are considered by the
intentions, and a person will get the reward according to his
intention. So whoever emigrates for Allah and His Messenger, his
emigration will be for Allah and His Messenger, and whoever
emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman whom he wants to
marry, his emigration would be for what he emigrated for.”
[Bukhari and Muslim].

2. Do not disregard a sinner

ِ‫ْرص َع اما أَن ْ َت ف ِيه‬
ْ ِ ‫ أَق‬:‫ ُم ْذن ِ ٌب َف َج َع َل َي ُقو ُل‬:‫رخ َي ُقو ُل‬ َ َ‫ْسائ ِي َل ُم َت َحاباي ْ ِن أ‬
ُ َ ‫حدهما ُم ْج َتهد ل ِ ْلع َِبا َدة ِ َو ْاآل‬ َ ْ ِ‫إ‬
ِْ ‫ أَق‬:‫ف ََي ُقو ُل َخ ِّلنِي َو َربِّي َحتاي َو َج َد ُه َي ْو ًما َعل َى َذن ْبٍّ ا ْس َت ْعظَ َم ُه َف َقا َل‬
‫ َخ ِّلنِي َو َرب ِّ َي أَبُ ِع ْث َت َعل َ اي‬:‫ْرص َف َقا َل‬
‫رف اهللُ َلكَ أَبَ ًدا َو َال يُ ْدخِلُكَ ا ْل َج ان َة ف ََب َع َث اهللُ إِل َْيه ِ َما َم َلكًا َف َق َب َض أَ ْر َوا َح ُه َما‬
ُ ِ ‫ َواهللِ َال َي ْغ‬:‫َرقِي ًبا؟ َف َقا َل‬
‫ أَ َت ْس َت ِطي ُع أَ ْن َت ْحظ َِر َعل َى َع ْبدِي‬:‫رخ‬
ِ َ ‫ ا ْد ُخ ِل ا ْل َج ان َة ب ِ َر ْح َمتِي َو َقا َل ل ِ ْْل‬:‫فَا ْج َت َم َعا ع ِ ْن َد ُه َف َقا َل لِل ُْم ْذن ِ ِب‬
‫ َر َوا ُه أَ ْحمد‬. ‫ اذْ َهبُوا بِهِ إلِ َى ال انار‬:‫ َال َيا َر ِّب َقا َل‬:‫َر ْح َمتِي؟ َف َقا َل‬

Abu Huraira reported God’s messenger as saying, “There were two


men among the B. Israil who loved one another, 'one of whom
engaged ardently in worship while the other called himself a sinner.
The former began to say, "Refrain from what you are doing," and the
other would reply, “Let me alone with my Lord.”
One day he found him committing a sin which he considered
serious and said, “Refrain;" to which he replied, “Let me alone with
my Lord. Were you sent to watch over me?”
He then said, "I swear by God that God will never pardon you, nor
will He bring you into paradise."
Allah then sent to them an angel who took their spirits, and they
came together into His presence To the sinner He said, “Enter
paradise by my mercy;” and to the other He said, “Can you forbid
my mercy to my servant?” He replied, “No, my Lord.” Then He said,
“Take him away to hell.”

3. Be the solution, not the problem (‫(بشروا وال تنفروا‬


As much as encouraging and reassuring others is the positive
approach to tackling problems, discouragement only ever has an
adverse impact and inflicts social and psychological harms such as
hopelessness, inferiority complex, depression, anxiety, stress, and
fear of failure. The environment of the home, office, institute, and
classroom is also negatively affected as a result.

The one you discourage will be reluctant to approach you in the


future and will not share his problems with you.

ُ ِّ ‫ِّسوا َو َس ِّكنُوا َو َال تُ َن‬


»‫رفوا‬ ُ ِّ ‫ « َي‬:‫ َقا َل َر ُسو ُل اهللِ َصلاى اهلل َعل َْيهِ َوسلم‬:‫َو َع ْن أَن َ ٍّس َقا َل‬
ُ ِّ ‫ِّسوا َو َال ُت َع‬
Anas reported God’s Messenger as saying, “Make things easy and do not
make them difficult; make people calm and do not scare them.’’ (Bukhari
and Muslim.)
4. Don’t judge

‫ َقا َل َقا َل‬،َ‫ َع ْن أَبِي ه َُريْ َرة‬،ِ‫ َع ْن أَبِيه‬،‫س‬


ٍّ ‫ َح ادثَ َنا ابْ ُن طَا ُو‬،‫ َح ادثَ َنا ُو َه ْي ٌب‬،‫وسي بْ ُن إ ِ ْس َماع ِي َل‬
َ ‫َح ادثَ َنا ُم‬
‫الظنا َفإ ِ ان ا‬
،‫ َوالَ َت َج اس ُسوا‬،‫ َوالَ َت َح اس ُسوا‬، ِ‫الظنا أَ ْك َذ ُب ا ْل َحدِيث‬ ‫َر ُسو ُل اهللِ صلى اهلل عليه وسلم إِياا ُك ْم َو ا‬
‫ َو ُكون ُوا ع َِبا َد اهللِ إ ِ ْخ َوانًا‬،‫ َوالَ َت َدابَرُوا‬،‫َوالَ َت َباغ َُضوا‬
Allah's Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬said, 'Beware of suspicion, for it is the worst
of false tales and don't look for the other's faults and don't spy and
don't hate each other, and don't desert (cut your relations with) one
another O Allah's slaves, be brothers!" (Bukhari)

5. Not losing hope


Even when Sayyiduna Wahshi was on the verge of losing hope, the
beloved Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬gave him hope and forgave him.
Sayyiduna Wahshi, who martyred Sayyiduna Hamzah ُ‫ َرض َِى الـلّٰـهُ َعـ ْنه‬in the
Expedition of Uhud, also fled to Taif on the day that Makkah was
conquered. Later, he visited the Holy Prophet ‫ َصلَّى الـلّٰـهُ َع َل ْيهِ َوٰال ِ ٖه َو َس َّلم‬and accepted
Islam with a delegation from Taif. The Honourable Prophet ‫َصلَّى الـلّٰـ ُه َع َل ْيهِ َوٰال ِ ٖه‬
‫ َو َس َّلم‬accepted his repentance as well, despite the severity of what he had
done in Uhud. During the reign of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq ُ‫ َرض َِى الـلّٰـهُ َعـ ْنه‬,
Sayyiduna Wahshi ُ‫ َرض َِى الـلّٰـهُ َعـ ْنه‬killed Musaylamah Al-Kadh-dhab in the
Expedition of Yamamah, (Subul-ul-Huda war Rashad, vol. 4, p. 217).
6. Allah’s men lead us to Allah
Ghaus Paak ka dhobi… story
Chor turns into Abdaal… Tere daaman me chupe chor niraala tera…
7. Traveler of the path
He was in the path to Allah…
The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said, "Allah says: 'I am just as My slave thinks I am,
(i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am
with him if He remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too,
remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people,
I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one
span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one
cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to
him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.' "
8. ّ ٰ ّ ‫من کان‬
‫لِل کان ہللاہ لہ‬
9. He crawled to the land of Mercy…….Destination paradise!

The Quran and Sunnah not only encourage us to repent but


command it. Also, not only does Allah Almighty accept the
repentance of those who repent, He loves them. Allah Almighty
states:

َّ ‫ب‬
‫الت َّوابِیۡ َّن‬ ُ ‫اِ َّن اللّٰ َّہ ُی ِح‬

“Indeed, Allah loves those who repent abundantly.”]1[


They have been referred to as the best of people in the hadith. Just
as the Messenger of Allah ‫ َصلَّى الـلّٰـهُ َعل َْيهِ َوٰال ِ ٖه َو َس َّلم‬said, “All humans make
mistakes, and the best of those who make mistakes are those who
repent.”]2[
The Beloved Rasool ‫صلَّى ەّٰللاُ تَ َع ٰالى َعلَ ْي ِه َو ٰا ِل ٖه َو َسلَّم‬
َ said, ‘The one who
makes repentance is like the one who has not committed a
sin.’ (Ibn Majah, vol. 4, pp. 491, Hadees 4250)
Sayyidi A’la Hadrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan ‫ّٰللا تَعَ ٰالی‬ ِ ‫َرحْ َمةُ ە‬
َ said, ‘There is no sin even including [the act of]
‫علَيْه‬
polytheism and disbelief which exists after true
repentance.’ (Fatawa Razawiyyah, vol. 21, pp. 121)
We should try our best to refrain ourselves from committing
sins, if it is committed even then, one should not delay in
making repentance. One method of repentance has been
mentioned in the following blessed Hadees:
Salat-ut-Taubah
The Beloved Rasool ‫صلَّى ەّٰللاُ تَ َع ٰالى َعلَ ْي ِه َو ٰا ِل ٖه َو َسلَّم‬
َ said, ‘The person
who commits any sin then performs two Rak’aat [Salah]
after making Wudu properly and repents of his sins,
Allah ‫ َع َّز َو َج َّل‬forgives his sins.’ (Sunan Kubra, vol. 6, pp. 109,
Hadees 10247)
Remember! The complete repentance of a person is that he
is ashamed of his past sins and at present he stops
committing those sins and pledges not to commit them in
the future (when repenting of the acts of violating the rights
of Allah ‫ َع َّز َو َج َّل‬and the rights of people), he should also fulfil
the rights. (Tafseer Na’eemi, vol. 1, pp. 266)
The above-mentioned Salah is mentioned in the blessed
Hadees and is called ‘Salat-ut-Taubah’. While persuading
people to perform Salat-ut-Taubah, Ameer-e-Ahl-e-Sunnat
‘Allamah Muhammad Ilyas Attar Qaadiri ‫ دَا َم ْت َب َر َكاتُـ ُه ُم ْال َعا ِل َيـه‬has
stated in Madani In’aam no. 16:
“Today, did you offer Salat-ut-Taubah at least once (preferably
before going to bed) and repent of the sins committed today as well
as in the past? Further, in case some sin gets committed ‫ّٰللا‬ ‫ َم َعاذَ ە‬,
did you repent instantly and vow never to commit that sin again
in future?”
Dear Islamic brothers! Make the practice of acting upon the
Madani In’amaat bestowed by Shaykh-e-Tareeqat, Ameer-
e-Ahl-e-Sunnat ‫ دَا َم ْت بَ َر َكاتُـ ُه ُم ْال َعا ِليَـه‬as part of your life, ‫ا ِْن شَـا ٓ َء‬
‫ ە‬you will receive great help in repenting of your sins and
‫ّٰللا‬
becoming a virtuous person.
‫‪Our blessings are a test from Allah:‬‬
‫عن أبي هريرة رضي اهلل عنه أنه سمع النبي صلى اهلل عليه وسلم يقول‪ :‬إن ثالثة من بني إْسائيل ‪ :‬أبرص ‪ ،‬وأرقع‪،‬‬
‫وأعمى‪ ،‬أراد اهلل أن يبتليهم فبعث إليهم ملك ًا‪ ،‬فأتى األبرص فقال‪ :‬أي شيء أحب إليك؟ قال ‪ :‬لون حسن‪ ،‬وجلد‬
‫حسن ‪ ،‬ويذهب عني الذى قد قذرني الناس؛ فمسحه فذهب عنه قذره وأعطي لونا حسن ًا‪ .‬قال‪ :‬فأي المال أحب‬
‫إليك؟ قال‪ :‬اإلبل‪-‬أو قال البرق‪-‬شك الرواي‪ -‬فأعطي ناقة عرشاء‪ ،‬فقال‪ :‬بارك اهلل لك فيها‪.‬‬

‫فأتى األرقع فقال‪ :‬أي شيء أحب إليك؟ قال‪ :‬شعر حسن‪ ،‬ويذهب عني هذا الذى قذرني الناس ‪ ،‬فمسحه فذهب‬
‫عنه وأعطي شعر ًا حسن ًا‪ .‬قال‪ :‬فأي المال أحب إليك؟ قال‪ :‬البرق‪ ،‬فأعطي برقة حامالً‪،‬وقال بارك اهلل لك فيها‪.‬‬

‫فأتي األعمى فقال‪ :‬أي شيء أحب إليك؟ قال‪ :‬أن يرد اهلل إلي برصي فأبرص الناس‪ ،‬فمسحه رفد اهلل إليه برصه‪ .‬قال‪:‬‬
‫فأي المال أحب إليك؟ قال‪ :‬الغنم‪ ،‬فأعطي شاة والد ًا‪ .‬فأنتج هذان وولد هذا‪ ،‬فكان لهذا واد من اإلبل‪ ،‬ولهذا‬
‫واد من البرق‪ ،‬ولهذا واد من الغنم‪.‬‬

‫ثم إنه أتى األبرص في صورته وهيئته‪ ،‬فقال له‪ :‬رجل مسكين وابن سبيل قد انقطعت بي الحبال في سرفي‪ ،‬فال بالغ‬
‫لي اليوم إال باهلل ثم بك‪ ،‬أسألك بالذي أعطاك اللون الحسن‪ ،‬والجلد الحسن‪ ،‬والمال‪ ،‬بعير ًا أتبلغ به في سرفي‪،‬‬
‫فقال‪ :‬الحقوق كثيرة‪ .‬فقال ‪ :‬كأني أرعفك‪ ،‬ألم تكن أبرص يقذرك الناس فقيراً‪ ،‬فأعطاك اهلل ؟! فقال ‪ :‬إنما ورثت‬
‫هذا المال كابر ًا عن كابر‪ ،‬فقال‪ :‬إن كنت كاذب ًا فصيرك اهلل إلى ما كنت‪.‬‬

‫وأتى األرقع‪ ،‬فقال له مثل ما قال لهذا‪ ،‬ورد عليه مثل ما ر ّد هذا‪ ،‬فقال إن كنت كاذبا فصيرك اهلل إلى ما كنت ‪.‬‬

‫وأتى األعمى في صورته وهيئته‪ ،‬فقال‪ :‬رجل مسكين وابن سبيل انقطعت بي الحبال في سرفي‪ ،‬فال بالغ لي اليوم إال‬
‫باهلل ثم بك‪ ،‬أسألك بالذي رد عليك برصك شاة أتبلغ بها في سرفي؟ فقال‪ :‬قد كنت أعمى رفد اهلل برصي‪ ،‬فخذ‬
‫ما شئت ودع ما شئت‪ ،‬فواهلل ما أجهدك اليوم بشيء أخذته هلل عز وجل فقال‪ :‬أمسك عليك مالك فإنما‬
‫ابتليتم‪ ،‬فقد رضي اهلل عنك‪ ،‬وسخط على صاحبيك ((متفق عليه)) ‪.‬‬
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said that:
He heard the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said: "There were three men among the Banu Israel,
one leper, one bald and one blind. Allah wanted to test them.
He therefore, sent to them an angel who came to the leper and asked him
what he would like best. He replied: "A good colour, a good skin and to be rid
of what makes me loathsome to people". He (the angel) rubbed him and his
loathsomeness vanished and he was given a good colour and a good skin. He
then asked him what type of property he would like best. The leper replied that
he would like camels - [or perhaps he said cattle, for Ishaq (one of the
subnarrator of the Hadith) was uncertain, either said: 'Camels,' or: 'Cattle'].
He was given a pregnant she-camel. The angel invoked for Allah's Blessing on
it.
The angel then went to the bald man and asked him what he would like best
and he replied: "Good hair and to be rid of what makes me loathsome to
people". The angel ran his hand over him and he was given good hair. He then
asked him what property he would like best. He replied that he would like
cattle, so he was given a pregnant cow. The angel invoked Allah's Blessing on
it.
The angel then went to the blind man and asked him what he would like best,
and he replied: "I wish that Allah restore my sight to me so that I may see
people." Thereupon the angel ran his hand over him and Allah restored his
sight. The angel then asked what property he would like best. He replied that
he would like sheep, so he was given a pregnant ewe.
Flocks and herds were produced for the three men, the first having a valley
full of camels, the second one, a valley full of cows and the third one full of
sheep.
Then the angel came in the form of a leper, to the one who had been a leper,
and said: "I am a poor man and my resources have been exhausted in my
journey, and my only means of reaching my destination are dependent on
Allah and then on you, so I ask you by Him Who gave you the good colour, the
good skin and the property, for a camel by which I may get to my destination".
He replied: "I have many dues to pay." The angel then said: "I think I recognize
you. Were you not a leper whom people found loathsome and a poor man to
whom Allah gave property?" He replied: "I inherited this property through
generations". The angel said: "If you are telling a lie, may Allah return you to
your former condition".
The angel went in the form of a bald man to the one who had been bald, and
said the same as he had said to the former and received a similar reply. So he
said: "If you are telling a lie, may Allah return you to your former condition".
The angel then went to the one who had been blind and said: "I am a poor
traveller and my resources have been exhausted in my journey. My only
means of reaching my destination are dependant on Allah and then on you,
so I ask you by Him Who restored your eyesight for a sheep by which I may get
to the end of my journey". He replied: "Yes, I was blind. Allah restored my
eyesight, so take what you wish and leave what you wish. I swear by Allah that
I shall not argue with you today to return anything you take, as I give it for
Allah's sake". The angel said: "Keep your property. You have all simply been
put to a test, and Allah is pleased with you and displeased with both of your
companions".

‫دیےئگےھتانںیمنیتاسمِلاوراکیوٹاٹوہااھت۔اہّٰلل َعزَّ َو َج َّلےنرہاکیےکدبےلدسدساطعرفامےئ۔اسملےک‬‫وجاڈنے ی‬
‘‘ ‫وعضاسملاوروٹےٹوہےئےکدبےلوٹےٹوہےئ۔‬

Lesson:
1. This Hadith tells us that abundance of property and wealth is
also a trial. He alone succeeds in this trial who, in the midst of
his riches does not forget about Allah’s Grace and his own
status.
2. False sense of pride and miserliness provokes the displeasure
of Allah.
3. Continue to make Du’a for protection against the evil of greed
and evil desires.
4. Try your level best to control your carnal desires or Nafs.
5. Spend in a controlled manner, while not being miserly.
6. Trust in Allah azza wa jall all the time.
7. Refrain from having prolonged hopes and desires.
8. Remember death all the time.
9. Always remember the manner in which the rich would have
to account for every cent on the Day of Judgement.
10. Try to become more generous.
11. Ponder on the dangers of having excessive wealth and riches.
12. Remember the ultimate punishment of those who lived in
this world, who had immense greed for wealth and money
and what finally what happened to them.

‫ےنوپاھچ‪’’ :‬ایکےھجماچہپےتنوہ؟ ‘‘ڑلےکےنیفنںیموجابدایوتاُسےناہک‪’’ :‬ںیمویہوہںسجےنےھجتالفںالفںابت‬

‫ُ َرقيْ ٌش َف َقالُوا‪َ :‬ص َب ْو َت‪َ ،‬ف َقا َل‪َ :‬ال َواهللِ َما َص َب ْو ُت‪َ ،‬لك ِْن َرأَيْ ُت َع ْن َيمِينِهِ َو َع ْن َي َسارِه ِ َ ْ‬
‫َحبَ ًة خِف ُْت إ ِ ْن ل َْم‬
‫أ ُ ِج ْب ُه َي ْط َع ْن َها ف ِ اي‬
‫‪Imam Mawaradi – may Allah be pleased with him – has narrated that it‬‬
‫‪was revealed about Abu Jahl.‬‬
He was the guardian of orphans. An orphan child came to him naked,
asking him for some money for himself, so he chased him away with
utter disregard. The child became sad. The elders of Quraish told him,
“Tell Muhammad (may Allah send peace and blessings upon him) to
intercede for you.” They said that to ridicule him, but the child did not
realize it and came to the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and
blessings upon him – and begged him. The Holy Prophet – may Allah
send peace and blessings upon him – never drove a needy away. So,
he went to Abu Jahl with him. He welcomed him and gave money to
the orphan. The Quraish made him feel ashamed and said, “Did you
give in?” He replied, “No, by God, I did not, but I saw spears on his right
and left. I feared that if I do not give, he will pierce them through my
mouth.”

Another narration:

‫ان َجال ِ ًسا فجاءه عثمان بعذق من ثمر ف ََو َض َع ُه بَي ْ َن َي َديْهِ فَأ َ َرا َد أَ ْن َيأْك ُ َل‬ ‫َو ا‬

Once he was seated and Sayyiduna ‘Uthman – may Allah
be pleased with him – visited him with a bunch of fruits and
placed it before him. He wanted to eat it but a beggar
stood at the entrance and said, “May Allah have mercy on
the servants who has mercy upon us!” He then
commanded to give it to the beggar but Sayyiduna
‘Uthman – may Allah be pleased with him – disliked it and
wished that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and
blessings upon him – eats it, so he went out and bought it
back from the beggar. The beggar then returned and he
did the same three times and the Holy Prophet – may Allah
send peace and blessings upon him – had been giving him
all these times but then he said to him, “Are you a beggar
or a trader?” This verse was then revealed.

3. Don’t forget your past


One shouldn’t forget his past… it keeps you humble.

4. Miserliness leads to destruction


Man, by nature is a miser and always desirous of more money!
Allamah Mulla Ali Qari – may Allah be pleased with him – writes as follows:

In Surah Bani Israel, verse 100, Allah azza wa jall declares:


‫‪“This Qur’anic verse clearly indicates that the miserly behaviour of‬‬
‫‪Bani Adam and mankind in general. As a matter of fact, mankind is‬‬
‫‪more greedy than even that bird that stops at a river bank and‬‬
‫‪refuses to drink fearing that by drinking this water, she might finish‬‬
‫‪the water or that worm which consumes sand and stops eating sand‬‬
‫‪and then dies, fearing that by eating this sand, she might finish the‬‬
‫”‪sand.‬‬

‫‪The Pitiful State of a Miser who Lets the Offer of Paradise Slip through his‬‬
‫‪Hand in Exchange of a Bunch of Dates:‬‬

‫َوأرخج ابْن أبي َحات ِم بِ َس َند َضعِيف َعن ابْن َعبااس‪ :‬أَن رجال كَانَت َل ُه ن َ ْخلَة رفعها فِي َدار رجل‬

‫َف َقا َل َل ُه الرجل‪َ :‬ولست بِأ َ َحق ح ِين أَعطيتك أَ ْر َبعِي َن ن َ ْخلَة بنخلتك المائلة‬

‫َف َقا َل َل ُه‪ :‬أ ُ ْع ِطيك على أَن ُت ْع ِطينِي َك َما أُرِيد تعطينها على َساق‬

‫فَسكت َعن ُه ث ام َقا َل‪ :‬ه ِ َي لَك على َساق‬

‫َقا َل‪ :‬ث ام ذهب إلِ َى ال ان ِبي صلى اهلل َعل َْيهِ َوسلم َف َقا َل َل ُه‪َ :‬يا َر ُسول اهلل إِن ال ان ْخلَة قد َص َارت لي َفه ِ َي‬
‫لَك‬

‫فَذهب َر ُسول اهلل صلى اهلل َعل َْيهِ َوسلم إلِ َى َصاحب ا‬
‫الدار َف َقا َل‪ :‬ال ان ْخلَة لَك ولعيالك‬
‫‪Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – reported:‬‬
A man had a date tree whose branches were hanging into a poor
man’s house who was living there with his family. Sometimes as this
man entered his house, he would climb the tree to pluck some dates
from it but it used to fall and the poor man’s children used to take it
but he would then come down from the tree and take the dates from
their hands, and if they ate it, he would insert his finger into their
mouth and take the date out. The poor man then complained to the
Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – about
him, so the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon
him – told him, “You may leave.” He approached the owner of the
date tree and told him, “Give me your date tree that hangs into the
poor man’s house and in lieu of that, there will be a date tree for you
in Paradise.”

The man replied, “I would have given it to you, because although I


have so many trees but the dates from this tree seem to be the
tastiest to me.”

The man then left and there was another man who was listening to
the conversation of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and
blessings upon him – with the owner of the date tree. That man came
to the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him –
and said to him, “Would you offer me the same what you had offered
the man if I manage to take the tree from him?”

He replied, “Yes.” The man left and met the owner of the tree, and
since both of them owned trees, he said to the owner, “Do you have
an idea that Sayyiduna Muhammad – may Allah send peace and
blessings upon him – has granted me paradise in exchange for the
tree that hangs in this person’s house?” He responded, “I would have
given it to you, because although I have so many trees but the dates
from this tree seem to be the tastiest to me.” He then asked him, “Do
you want to sell it?” He said, “No, unless you offer me what I demand,
and I don’t think you would offer what I have in mind.”

He said, “How much do have in mind?” He replied, “40 date


trees.” The other man said, “You demand too much for a bent
tree.” He paused for a little and then said, “I give you 40 date
trees.” He said to him to testify if he is speaking the truth, so he
testified to give 40 date trees in exchange for his bent tree. He stayed
there for a moment then the man (owner) said, “There is no deal
between you and I, because we haven’t parted ways yet.”

The man (buyer) said to him, “Do I not have more rights for
purchasing your bent tree for 40 date trees?!”

The owner said, “I will give it to you on one condition, if you give me
what I want (the 40 trees) in a single row.” He kept quiet and then
replied, “I give it to you all in a row.”

The narrator says, “He went to the Holy Prophet – may Allah send
peace and blessing upon him – and said to him, “Ya RasoolAllah, the
date tree now belongs to me and I make you its owner.”

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him –
then visited the poor man’s house and said to him, “The tree now
belongs to you and your children.”

The Dreadful End of Korah (Qaroon)


Korah (Qaroon in Arabic) was a very poor man from the nation of
Sayyiduna Moosa – peace be upon him. Feeling sorry on his pitiful
state, Sayyiduna Moosa – peace be upon him – taught him the science
of alchemy. He used it to his full potential and hoarded abundance of
gold and silver. Allah Almighty states:

(Al-Qasas 28, Verse 76)

When the believing men advised Korah to be grateful for Allah’s


bounties and spend in His path by giving Zakaat and Sadaqah, so that
he may attain salvation on the Day of Judgment.

(Al-Qasas 28, Verse 77)

ۡ ۡ ْ ‫ۤ ۡ ۡ ٗ ی‬
‫ال ِان َ َّ َما اُو ِتیتہ عٰل ِعل ٍم ِعن ِدی‬
َ َ‫ق‬
َ ُ
(Al-Qasas 28, Verse 78)

Instead of showing appreciation to the blessings of Allah upon him, he


rather bragged about how knowledgeable he was and that whatever
he owned was in fact through his knowledge alone.

Hazrat Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with him
– says that when Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon him – summoned
Korah to pay Zakaat, he refused and told people that Sayyinda Moosa
– peace be upon him – had the intention to snatch his belongings. He
conspired against him with a prostitute upon which Sayyiduna Moosa
– peace be upon him – cursed him to be doomed. As a result of this
Allah Almighty buried Korah and his treasures deep down the
earth. It has been mentioned in a narration that he and his treasures
will continue to sink till the Day of Judgment.

The Reality of Dunya!

Hadrat Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah Radi Allahu ‘Anhu narrates:

“One day the Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam said to me,
‘Shall I not show you the reality of this world and what is in it?’

“The Holy Prophet Sallal Laahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam then took my hand
and continued to lead me to a dump site. At that place, at that
moment, there was a skull laying on one side, the mess of people, old
and torn clothes and many pieces of bones. He then said to me, ‘O
Abu Hurayrah! This skull which you see, this is also someone like you
people who had many desires and many hopes and today, only the
bones have remained. And these bones also, very soon will crumble
and become sand. And this mess (of people) that you see is also
those different types of food which the person used to acquire with
great effort. But today, people stay away from it (because of its foul
smell). These torn and tattered clothes used to be stylish clothes but
today, the wind throws it from side to side. These bones are the
bones of those animals which these people used to ride travelling
around the world. This is the reality of the world. Those who can
weep about the world, should weep. Thereafter, we also weep.’”

A Miser withholds Wealth:


During the blessed era of the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace
and blessings upon him. Tha’labah ibn Abi Haatib did not pay Zakaat
and was therefore doomed. Hazrat Abu Umaamah Baahili – may
Allah be pleased with him – narrated that Tha’labah ibn Haatib – may
Allah be pleased with him – requested the beloved Prophet – may
Allah send peace and blessings upon him – to pray for him to have
abundance of wealth. Our beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace
and blessings upon him – replied, “Little wealth is better than more
wealth, for it is easier being grateful to Allah on little wealth than it is
on more.”

Tha’labah listen to him and returned but the love of wealth forced him
to appear again. He came and said, “Ya RasoolAllah, please pray in
Allah’s Court that He makes him wealthy with His abundance. I swear
by the One who has appointed you as the true Messenger that if He
blesses me with wealth, I will spend it in His path and will pay
everyone who has the right over it.” Upon hearing this the beloved
Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – lifted his
hands up for Du’a and recited:
‫َال ّل ُہ ام ْارزُ ْق َث ْعل ََب َة َم ًاال‬
O Allah, grant Tha’labah wealth.

His Du’a was answered. He bought some goats with his money and
then there was a rapid increase in his herd and it grew so much that
he did not have enough space to contain in the city of Madinah
Munawwarah. He took his herd outside the city to a remote
location. He used to offer five times Salah with congregation in the
Masjid but as his wealth grew more, he would only come to offer Zohr
and Asr Salah with the congregation in the Masjid. When he got
completely drowned in wealth, he abandoned all five prayers with
congregation and did not even show up for Jumuah in the
Masjid. When the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and
blessings upon him – realized that he was missing in five times Salah
and even stopped coming for Jumuah, he asked the Sahaba – may
Allah be pleased with them, “What happened to Tha’labah?” They
reported, “His wealth grew so much that he has abandoned the city
and living in a remote location.” The Holy Prophet – may Allah send
peace and blessings upon him – reacted to it and said, “I feel sorry
you, Tha’labah! I feel sorry you, Tha’labah!”

There came a day when the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace
and blessings upon him – sent out his Sahaba to collect Zakaat from
the wealthy. Whoever they approached to collect Zakaat, they all
adhered to the code except Tha’labah. When they asked him for his
Zakaat, he refused and said, “It’s tax. You can leave now. I will sleep
over it and then decide about the payment.” They came back empty
handed, and they haven’t yet narrated the incident to the beloved
Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – but he
began to say, “It’s a pity, Tha’labah! It’s a pity, Tha’labah! You have
refused to pay Zakaat!”
When the Sahaba – may Allah be pleased with them – reported back
to the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon
him – what Tha’labah had to say, he expressed great
disappointment. It was at that time that Allah Almighty revealed the
following verse concerning Tha’labah:

(Al-Taubah 9, Verse 75-76)

When Tha’labah became aware that Allah Almighty became angry and
He revealed a Quranic verse about his betrayal, he got worried and
said, “Now people will call me a miser etc.” Due to the fear of
blasphemy, he calculated the Zakaat and brought it in the court of the
beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him –
and requested him to accept it but our beloved Prophet – may Allah
send peace and blessings upon him – told him, “Take your Zakaat
away, for Allah Almighty has denied the acceptance of your
Zakaat.” Hearing this Tha’labah went back and put sand in his hair
(customary expression of extreme regret and grief).

There came a time when the beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace
and blessings upon him – passed away and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr
Siddeeque – may Allah be pleased with him – became the first
Caliph. Tha’labah saw it as an opportunity and tried to entice him to
accept his Zakaat. He refused to accept it saying, “If my beloved
Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him – had
refused to accept your Zakaat then who am I to accept it?!” And then
during the time of Sayyinduna Umar – may Allah be pleased with him
– again, he lured him into accepting his Zakaat but he too, refused it
saying, “If my beloved Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings
upon him – and Abu Bakr – may Allah be pleased with him – had
refused to accept your Zakaat then how can I accept it?!”

He died during the caliphate of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman al Ghani – may


Allah be pleased with him.

‫َ‬ ‫ا‬
‫ْسا ًعا َحتي إِذَا أَتَى َعل َى ح ِْص ٍّن َح ِصي ٍّن فَأ ْ َ‬
‫َح َز‬ ‫رخ َج ا ْل َع ُد ُّو فِي أَثَرِه ِ ِ َ‬
‫اهللَ َفإ ِ ان َم َث َل ذَلِكَ َك َم َث ِل َر ُج ٍّل َ َ‬
‫َك اهللِ ‪َ .‬قا َل ال ان ِب ُّي صلى اهلل عليه‬ ‫الش ْي َطا ِن إِالا ب ِ ِذ ْ ِ‬‫ْح ُز َنف َْس ُه ِم َن ا‬ ‫َنف َْس ُه ِم ْن ُه ْم َك َذلِكَ ا ْل َع ْب ُد الَ يُ ْ ِ‬
‫الطا َع ُة َوا ْلجِ َها ُد َوا ْله ِ ْج َرةُ َوا ْل َج َما َع ُة َفإِن ا ُه َم ْن‬ ‫وسلم َوأَنَا آ ُمرُ ُك ْم ب ِ َخ ْم ٍّس اهللُ أَ َم َرنِي بِهِنا ا‬
‫الس ْم ُع َو ا‬
‫يد ِشبْر ٍّ َف َق ْد َخ َل َع رِ ْب َق َة اإل ِ ْسالَم ِ ِم ْن عُنُقِهِ إِالا أَ ْن َي ْر ِج َع َو َم ِن ا ادع َى َد ْع َوى‬

‫ َف َقا َل َر ُج ٌل َيا َر ُسو َل اهللِ َوإ ِ ْن َصلاى َو َص َام َقا َل َوإ ِ ْن َصلاى َو َص َام‬. ‫ا ْل َجاهِل ِ اي ِة َفإِن ا ُه ِم ْن ُج َثا َج َه ان َم‬

ٌ ‫ِيث َح َس ٌن َص ِح‬ ٌ ‫ َه َذا َحد‬. ِ‫فَا ْدعُوا ب ِ َد ْع َوى اهللِ اال ِذي َس اما ُك ُم ا ْل ُم ْسلِمِي َن ا ْل ُم ْْو ِمنِي َن ع َِبا َد اهلل‬
. ِ‫ َقا َل ُم َح ام ُد بْ ُن إ ِ ْس َماع ِي َل ا ْل َحار ُِث األَ ْش َعر ِ ُّي َل ُه ُص ْح َب ٌة َو َل ُه غَيْرُ َه َذا ا ْل َحدِيث‬. ‫يب‬

Narrated Al-Harith Al-Ash'ari:

that the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said: "Indeed Allah


commanded Sayyiduna Yahya bin Zakariyya ‫علیہما السالم‬
with five commandments to abide by, and to command
the Bani Isra'il to abide by them. But he was slow in doing
so.

So 'Eisa alaihis Salam said: 'Indeed Allah commanded you


with five commandments to abide by and to command
the Bani Isra'il to abide by them. Either you command
them, or I shall command them.'

So Sayyiduna Yahya alaihis Salam said: 'I fear that if you


precede me in this, then the earth may swallow me, or I
shall be punished.'

So he gathered the people in Jerusalem, and they filled


the Masjid and sat upon its balconies. So he said: 'Indeed
Allah has commanded me with five commandments to
abide by, and to command you to abide by them:

1. The first of them is that you worship Allah and do


not associate anything with him. The example of
the one who associates others with Allah is that of
a man who buys a servant with his own gold or
silver, then he says to him: "This is my home and
this is my business, so take care of it and give me
the profits." So he takes care of it and gives the
profits to someone other than his master. Which of
you would live to have a servant like that?

2. And Allah commands you to perform Salah, and


when you perform Salah then do not turn away, for
Allah focuses on His worshipers as long as he does
not turn away.

3. And He commands you with fasting. For indeed the


example of fasting, is that of a man in a group with
a sachet containing musk. All of them enjoy its
fragrance. Indeed the breath of the fasting person
is more pleasant to Allah than the scent of musk.

4. And He commands you to give charity. The


example of that, is a man captured by his enemies,
tying his hands to his neck, and they come to him
to beat his neck. Then he said: "I can ransom myself
from you with a little or a lot" so he ransoms
himself from them.
5. And He commands you to remember Allah. For
indeed the example of that is like that of a man
whose enemy quickly tracks him until he reaches
an impermeable fortress in which he protects
himself from them. This is how the worshiper is; he
does not protect himself from Shaitan except by
the remembrance of Allah.'"

The Holy Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said: "And I command you with five


that Allah has commanded me: 1) Listening and 2)
obeying, 3) Jihad, 4) Hijrah, and the 5) Jama'ah. For indeed
whoever parts from the Jama'ah the measure of a hand-
span, then he has cast off the yoke of Islam from his neck,
unless he returns. And whoever calls with the call of
Jahiliyyah then he is from the coals of Hell."

Someone said: "O Messenger of Allah! Even if he


performs Salah and fasts?"

So he (‫ )ﷺ‬said: "Even if he performs Salah and fasts. So


call (each other) with the names that Allah gave you:
Muslims, believers, worshipers of Allah."
