You are the secretary in the Ministry of Social Welfare in Cameroon and you
attended a seminar which highlighted the plight of children in the Far North Region. You to
give a report on the plight of children. Selecting relevant material from the passage below,
write a report in two paragraphs of 150 words stating the plight of children in the Far North
Region of Cameroon. Express yourself in such a away as to arouse sympathy for these
children. Pay attention to grammar, spelling , punctuation and handwriting.
Far North is a predominantly Muslim region with over 80 percent of the population
following Islam, 15 percent Christians and a small percentage belonging to religious minorities .
Children in the age group of 1-15 years form almost 39 percent of the population. Far North is a
society that is patriarchal where children are gendered from a very young age. The class system is
also very rigid and strong, determining the ways in which children belonging to different classes
experience childhood.
A number of beliefs and practices that are both harmful for children and highly sexist continue to
be practiced. Child marriage is a major problem with over 65 percent of the girls getting married
before they are 18years old. These children are given out in marriage, irrespective of their consent .
according to their culture, girls even at the age of 15 as long as they have a well-developed bosom,
can get married. Some of these girls also have no choice than to go ahead with the desire of their
parents because of poverty that abounds in their home. Poverty remains the single most influential
factor for the degraded state of children in the Far North. Poverty affects children the most. Children
are denied basic rights to survival and to childhood due to economic hardships. Migration due to
poverty and war, is another major factor that adds to the already degraded status of the children.
Children in these situations are vulnerable to physical and sexual exploitation especially for young
girls who involuntarily engage into acts of prostitution, just to remedy the situation in their families ,
when they find themselves in a new environment.
The infant Mortality Rate[IMR] is 51, with the Under Five Mortality Rate [U5MR] being
pegged at 77. The region continues to have ne of the highest rates of malnutrition in Cameroon, with
nine out ten children malnourished to some degree. Between 35 and 50 of every 100 newborns,
suffer from low- birth weight. Approximately 70 percent of mothers are afflicted by nutritional
deficiency and anaemia. The female disadvantage in child mortality has remained persistent, while
the female/male gap in acute malnutrition has increased over the past decade. On average the
incidence of severe malnutrition among girls under five is 2-4 percent higher than among boys.
The Far North Region invests only 15.7percent of their revenue in education. The enrolment rates
in primary schools are merely and the gender gap in primary education has reduced considerably.
However, the dropout rate especially among girls is a cause for concern. Although approximately
45 percent girls and 60 percent boys are enrolled in primary school, only35 percent girls and 30
percent boys are enrolled in secondary school .Most of the boys drop out to go into cattle rearing and
business while child marriages force many girls to drop out of school.
Child labour is one of the most important children’s issues in the Far North Region. A vast
majority of children contribute partially to the household income or are the sole bread earners in the
family. Most the children work in the agricultural sector, within the family or outside. Others work in
deplorable and hazardous working conditions in the unorganized sector. Cattle rearing is also a large
sector employing children. The weaving industry also employs children where many children work
as bonded labourer. Child trafficking is another issue of concern. Trafficking within the country and
across international borders is rampant. Children are lured away either into commercial sex work or
into domestic work. To crown all these, the children’s needs are neglected. Some dress shabbily and
they look white like little devils.
