DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
(Regulations - R 2021)
Duration:90 Mins Maximum: 50 Marks
Answer ALL Questions.
PART – A (6 2=12 Marks)
1. Distinguish open and cross drive of a belt drive. (2) (BL4)(CO1)
2. What do you mean by chordal action of chain drive? (2) (BL1)(CO1)
3. How is a wire rope designated? (2)(BL1)(CO1)
4. What are the common forms of gear tooth profile? (2) (BL1)(CO2)
5. Where do we use skew helical gears? (2) (BL1)(CO2)
6. What is a herringbone gear? Where it is used? (2) (BL1)(CO2)
Part-B (2×13=26 Marks)
7. (a) Design a belt drive to transmit20kw at 720rpm aluminium rolling machine, the speed ratio being 3.
The distance between the pulleys is 3m. Diameter of rolling machine pulley is 1.2m. (13)(BL3) (CO1)
(OR)
(b) A centrifugal pump running at 340rpm is to be driven by a 100KW motor running at 1440 rpm. The
drive is to work for at least 20 hours every day. The centre distance between the motor shaft and the pump
shaft is 1200mm. suggest a suitable multiple v-belt drive for this application. Also calculate the actual
belt tensions and stress inducted. (13) (BL3)(CO1)
8. (a) A compressor is to be actuated from a 10KW electric motor. The motor shaft is 970 rpm and that of
the compressor is to be 330rpm. The compressor operating in two shifts. The minimum centre distance
should be 1000mm. Design a suitable chain drive. (13)(BL3)(CO1)
(OR)
(b) Design a bushed pin type of flexible coupling for connecting a motor and pump shaft for the following
dataPower = 20kW,Speed = 1000rpm,Shaft diameter = 50mm,Bearing pressure for rubber bush =
2N/mm2 (13) (BL3)(CO1)
Part-C (1×12=12 Marks)
9. (a) Design a spur gear drive required to transmit 45 kW at pinion speed of 800 rpm. The velocity ratio
3.5:1. The teeth are 20o full depth involute with 18 teeth on the pinion. Both the pinion and gear are made
of steel with a maximum safe static stress of 180N / [Link] medium shock load conditions.
(12)(BL3)(CO2)
(OR)
(b) A helical gear speed up drive is required to drive a centrifugal compressor running at 3000 rpm. The
helical gear speed up unit is driven by an electric motor running at 1000 rpm. The compressor requires a
nominal input power of 12.5 kW. The helix angle of 25 o may be assumed for the gears. Standard involute
profile 20o full depth system will be used for the gear teeth. The gear pair is required to last for at least
10,000 hrs. Design the gear drive for following gear materials. Pinion – Heat treated steel. Gear- High
grade cast iron. (12)(BL3)(CO2)
