Compared to its naked MT07 sibling,
the Tracer’s chassis has fractionally slower
steering (caster angle increases by 0.5mm)
and the wheelbase stretches 60mm to 1460.
This increase in stability is appropriate for
touring (but not for an urban specialist like
the MT07). That said, with a short 90mm of
trail, the Tracer should remain relatively sharp
and light steering. The frame is steel tube with
an aluminium swingarm. This is noteworthy
— most bikes at this end of the market make
do with a steel swingarm. A couple of kilos of
unsprung weight saved there.

the arms and shoulders. The pessimist in me
notes they do look a bit vulnerable to tip-over

An easily adjustable screen is always a
welcome feature. In the Tracer’s case, there’s
a comfortable setting for most riders and

gearchange is so slick.
Fuelling is spot on, with predictable on/
off transition and excellent low-speed/low-
rpm engine stability. It runs to the redline with
enthusiasm, but not with dedicated sports
engine enthusiasm. Changing up 7000rpm
rather than persevering all the way to the 9000
redline doesn’t reduce acceleration that much.
This confirms Yamaha has prioritised midrange
and fuel economy over maximum power.
Exactly what we’d do for this type of bike.
One thing we’ve noticed with CP2 engines, at
highway speeds some are smoother than others.
This could be a function of kilometres travelled,
how they were run-in, and/or bar and footpeg
design. Our 2500km test Tracer was smooth
enough at 110km/h, but we have ridden others
that are exceptional. If it’s an issue for owners,
we’d suggest trying some high-mass bar end
weights. An extra tooth on the countershaft is
another option as the bike has enough punch
to get away with it. This would noticeably calm
things on the open road, and owners looking to
do long trips should consider this.
The all-round design of the bike is apparent
in the chassis settings. As expected, the steering
is light, the bike tips in and turns easily, and the
rate of turn is pretty quick. The wheelbase isn’t

version of the Tracer, stepping up its
touring ability. Additional equipment

7 hits its sales targets in Australia, then
perhaps the GT variant might get a

a GT equivalent can be built from the

better and cheaper if it was offered as a

OUR RIDE
I was astride a loaned Honda NT1100
for this story, the model which has
become a best-seller for the company,
especially in Europe. Australian Road
Rider ran a full test of the bike back in
issue 170, but if you don’t have it, you’ll
find that article on roadrider.com.au.
For this trip I found the bike to
be excellent. The twin-pot motor
the bike shares with the Africa Twin
makes a relatively modest (by today’s
standards) 75kW and 104Nm, but I
never found myself wanting for more,
even when overtaking on highways.
The cruise control was excellent,
the fairing and screen protective,
the heated grips welcome and the
riding position — quite upright — very
comfortable.
I found the NT1100’s seat height to be
reasonable at 820mm, making it easier
to cope with than adventure bikes (often
with seat heights north of 850mm) and
even other “crossover” machines.
The test bike was a 6-speed
manual, but there’s also a Dual Clutch
Transmission model available (+$1000)
which gives you automatic shifting
and button-shift manual override. The
editor tested the NT’s cruiser sibling,
the CMX1100, with a DCT and loved it.
The test bike came with the Honda
“slimfit” panniers (33 litres left, 32
right) which are designed for urban
compatibility… they won’t swallow a
full-face helmet, but do allow for some
lane filtering. There’s a large top-box
available if you want one and an array of
other accessories.
Fuel consumption is excellent, with
the 20-litre tank capable of taking the
bike 400km in the right conditions.
Since our test ride, the MY24
NT1100 has been announced, with
the bike receiving two new vivid paint
schemes: Matt Jeans Blue Metallic
and Candy Chromosphere Red.
Other than the paint choices, the bike
remains the same.

WHO’S IT FOR?
The Royal Enfield Bullet 350 is not really a
learner’s bike. The capacity points to being
a learner’s bike, the horsepower, the torque,
all point to being a learner’s bike. However,
the seat height, the old-school clutch and
gear box, the style of the seating, the vintage
looks and the vintage riding position don’t
make it perfect for learners. Not bad if you’re
tall, but not particularly great if you’re short.
Something like the Meteor or Hunter (which
is quite a lot lighter) would be much better.
I actually think the Bullet 350 suits the
more experienced rider. If you’ve been riding

Seventeen complete strangers had set off

It was so much fun most of the group
continued to meet up and ride overseas for
many years afterward, but by this trip only the
three of the original ‘Band of Brothers’ are
still travelling together.
Luckily, Dave managed to round up another
six riders, including his daughter Emily and
her partner Chris, to make up the numbers
required for a free support vehicle. And what a
great crew it turned out to be!
The ride was arranged through Cuong’s
Motorbike Adventures based in Hanoi. Four
support staff accompanied us — Mr Phu,
the lead rider, Mr Tap, the sweep rider and
mechanic, Mr Anh, the support vehicle driver
and Ms Yen, the general support person.
Coincidentally, Phu who had also worked as a
support rider with the 2013 Ho Chi Minh Trail
ride, recognised the three original “brothers”
and greeted us warmly. An experienced guide

MOTORRAD GARAGE DIGITAL TYRE PRESSURE GAUGE WHATZ NEW

Motorrad Garage has sent Australian Road

Rider one of its digital tyre pressure gauges, a
compact, easy-to-use tool with a backlit display
which is so cheap — just $12.95 — you should
have one under the seat of all your bikes.
Its compact shape means we’ve had no
trouble manoeuvring it around discs or chains
to get onto a valve, it reads out in PSI, Bar, kpa
or kg/cm² and holds the reading for 10 seconds.
The unit arrives ready to use, complete
with batteries, and will shut itself off after
30 seconds… so we suspect the replaceable
batteries will last for years and years.
Having the right tyre pressures will keep
your bike handling like it should and is the best
way to keep tyres lasting as long as they can.
