Hello All.
Dare I say it, but I don’t think we have had so much rain in the last week or two. The
evenings are drawing the the daffodils look lovely, everywhere, as do the lambs on our
cover picture, so Spring must here at last!
Best wishes

TO ALL
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
PARISHIONERS
Dear Friends,
April has arrived! I'm hoping for blue skies and sunshine, in fact anything other
than more rain. Apparently, we had more than 200% of our normal rainfall in
February. Our villages have seen many problems and water, water everywhere is
probably an apt saying for many of us.
Spring does arrive though and daffodils now out in bloom make a wonderful sign
of spring, new life for us all. The hedgerows are already starting to show signs of
green and the birds are building their nests. How wonderful to hear the birds
singing! What joy there will be in sowing seeds and planting in the gardens. Our
own garden will need a lot of replanting as much of it has been under water since
December!
Our churches across the benefice (that's ten parishes) are all working amazingly
well. We have a wonderful team of people who give of their time in so many ways
including helping in services, making teas and cakes, creating flower
arrangements, opening the churches, planning activities for us all in our
communities, raising funds and creating and distribution of the parish magazines.
Our ten churches are Ashwicken, Congham, East Walton, Gayton, Gayton
Thorpe, Grimston, Great Massingham, Harpley, Little Massingham and Roydon.
This message goes into three magazines which are distributed to all our parishes.
If you would also like to help do please get in touch.
Easter has been early this year but the message for us all at this time is of hope
and new beginnings.
Hope gives us the promise of future blessings. In faith we know that God is
always with us. As we journey through our lives, there are times when we all need
hope for tomorrow. Easter brings us that hope. Jesus came back! He spent time
with his disciples and friends. He spent time on earth showing there is a life
beyond where we are.
What good news that is! Time to jump for joy! Time to look ahead with
confidence. Time for us to enjoy all that we have, looking forward to the future.
And for now, let's enjoy the Spring weather with new life and beginnings all
around us.

Grimston Cricket Club
As the season rapidly approaches we are now hitting our stride, with indoor net
practice, youth, and ladies cricket all taking place ‑ so much for cricket being only
a summer sport!! All of these sessions have been well attended, with almost 20
women and girls regularly coming down for ladies training ‑ full credit for this goes
to our amazing ladies captains C. Nichols and M. Shackcloth who have made
sure the club is a welcoming environment for new, returning, and current players.
February 16th saw us host our second annual bingo night ‑ with over 60 people in
attendance we raised £790 for the club; these are essential funds as our number
of teams continues to expand at pace ‑ we will be spending almost £1000 on
cricket balls alone this year (we need a new ball for every match) so the support
of our community is key if we want to continue offering good value cricket.
We are very aware that ours is an expensive sport with bats, pads, gloves etc to
buy, so it's very important to us to keep membership and match/training fees as
low as possible to attract new players. As such, new sponsors would be very
welcome and we have a number of opportunities from advertising boards (£100
banner included) and match day sponsorship (£30); please get in touch with the
club for more information.
The other big news for us is that we have signed a Strength and Conditioning
Coach in Jamie Hornigold. Jamie is owner of Norfolk coast Health and Fitness,
and is a local man himself having grown up in the village ‑ Jamie will be running
his circuit training sessions on Thursday evenings for the club, with a focus on fun
and building strength/fitness together. We couldn't be happier to have Jamie
onboard and recognise that as we look to grow it's important we have key people
in place to help us.
The final ask from the club is that our amazing community continue to support us
‑ we have lots of volunteering opportunities from running the bar to
umpiring/scoring and flipping burgers on the BBQ. Any help is hugely appreciated,
everyone at the club is a volunteer and every penny we raise goes straight back
into our cricket offering.
We look forward to seeing lots of you at the ground in the coming months ‑ roll on
summer!!

At the annual meeting in February Pat Watts was re‑elected as President for the
next year. This was followed by some social time together. In March, Mark Dye came
to talk about the Gaywood River and surrounding area.
A calendar of our monthly meetings is on the WI notice board in Grimston village hall.
Do look and see what is happening, new members are always welcome. We usually
meet on the third Monday of the month at 7.30pm except for December.

A View from Lanky Hill
I'm writing the edition on Sunday 17th March, which is every year St. Patrick's Day,
much beloved of t he Irish. Especially so as at the Cheltenham Horse Festival,
an Irish trained horse won the Cheltenham Gold Cup, presented by Anne, the
Princess Royal. A day later she was in Dublin to see the Irish rugby team lift the
Six Nations Trophy for the second year running.
Scotland, England's old nemesis, came second and England's chances of a place
went begging as with the last game of the tournament they lost to the French by a
point. This left Wales in bottom place, the dreaded wooden spoon! I played my
best Rugby at Bedford (Goldinton Road) and often played in Wales. This was in
the 1970” s when such Welsh stars as Gareth Edwards and J.P.R. Williams wee
winning everything. This year to lose their final game to Italy would embarrass
them immensely.
Turning away from sport, I hear that Mr. Putin in Russia is putting himself up for
the umpteenth time to be re‑elected as President. He is a virtual dictator; history
recalls the fate of several dictators. Not so long‑ago Hitler tried to conquer the
whole of Europe and we all know how he finished up, suicide in the Spring of
1945 was his just deserts. Going back much further to the beginning of the
nineteenth century a Frenchman by the name of Napoleon Bonaparte tried and
failed to become dictator of the whole of Europe. The centre of King's Lynn has a
street name which tells of his eventual defeat. On the one‑way system, drive
across from Morrison's supermarket and one is in Wellesley Street, further, down
opposite the Railway Station another one‑way street is called Waterloo Street.
Another name for Wellesley the great soldier and eventual Prime Minister was the
Duke of Wellington. He of course fought several battles against Napoleon
Bonaparte, eventually in 1815 defeating him at the battle of Waterloo, and
Bonaparte was sent to spend the rest of his life in exile on a small island in the
middle of the Atlantic Ocean, called St. Helena. The only battle he won there was
by cheating at cards against his rather old Mother!
Failing to get good enough grades at “A” level to go to University, I elected to go
to local Agricultural College and take the National Diploma in Agriculture. I chose
Shuttleworh. College on the A1 near Biggleswade in Bedfordshire. They required
all students to spend 12 months working on a farm, with both crops and
Livestock. Living with my family in North Wootton I joined Church Farm at North
Wootton, owned, and managed by Henry Towler.
12 | Village Link
The farm had a dairy cow herd of about 50 Friesian milking cows, look after by a
young man called Jimmy Plowright who lived with his young wife in a cottage
next to the Village Hall.
I never milked the cows but spent the year on the arable part of the farm. The
senior tractor driver was a man called Ted, Henry had just bought a white David
Brown 990 tractor, nicknamed Snowy! I joined the two other General Land
workers, both nearing retirement age, one called Frank Fiddaman, who lived
adjacent to Roythorne's garage. Now Frank was a daily drinker and every
evening cycled to the House on the Green pub on the Ling Common Road to
Castle Rising, working on Saturday mornings, Frank I'm afraid drank too many
pints of mild ale on Friday evening's, his contribution to work on Saturday
mornings was usually interrupted by frequent visits to nearest hedge or dyke!!
The other worker was called Owen Plume who drove the ten tonne Bedford
Lorry. In the winter months Owen took sugar to the King's Lynn sugar beet
factory. Now long gone it was situated close the River Great Ouse where the
Palm Paper factory is now situated.
Of course, in a way year as that was, a single row harvester dropped the lifted
beet back into the earth, and me, Frank and Owen with pitchforks loaded them
onto the lorry.
Time and space do not allow me to describe my two years at Shuttleworth
Agricultural Colle, except to say in July 1969, I drove up to Leeds University and
achieved a second‑class National Diploma in Agriculture. During those two
years, either before or after since, I've never played so much sport or drank so
much beer, but at only 1shiling and 11pence a pint, this was affordable.
Next month will be the May edition and Spring will have Sprung!

Our local group, OWLS, had a very enjoyable lunch at Brothers in Arms on
Valentines day. Both the service and the food was good. Our next meet up will be
on March 13th at Worzals, followed by April 10th at the Feathers Dersingham and
May 15th at “The Gate “ Fairgreen.
If you would like to join our small but dedicated group of Wednesday lunchers

Flooding and Drainage Issues Meeting
"Everest –
Our Village Link magazine is such an important part of the community in our
villages and we have so many people to thank for getting it together and out to
everyone every month.
Due to the retirement of one of our amazing deliverers, after doing it for many
years, we need someone to take over their round once a month (well, 10 months
a year).
The round is door‑to‑door delivery of 56 magazines to The Grove, Nursery Way
and Nursery Close.
If you can help with this I would be very grateful. Please contact me either by
email (janh.willson@gmail.com) or phoning me on 01553 630129.
Many thanks

APRIL MONTHLY BULLETIN FROM ROYDON PARISH
COUNCIL
Surface Water Flooding꞉ Householders are responsible for the surface water
drainage within their plot, including roof run‑off and infrastructure connecting to
the wider network in the village i.e. ditches, drains, culverts etc bordering or
running through plots. Regular maintenance/clearance of any drainage
infrastructure is essential, to help protect both you and your neighbours.
Hopefully, we are through the worst of the rain now, and the various authorities
are working in the background to address the issues longer term, however, if
you experience flooding internally, please report this immediately to the Lead
Local Flood Authority (Norfolk County Council) via their Flooding Hotline on
0344 800 8013. (If there is an immediate danger to people or property, call
999). You can also use the Norfolk County Council website to report flooding
via an on‑line form. Please also let Roydon Parish Council know, in case we
can offer support or help with reporting etc. (Use
https꞉//www.norfolk.gov.uk/safety/floods/report‑a‑flood. This webpage also
provides useful advice to protect yourselves from flooding, and what to do
during and after flooding. Information is also available on the Borough Council
of King's Lynn & West Norfolk's website. Use https꞉//www.west‑
norfolk.gov.uk/info/20098/ water_management_and_ flooding/173/
surface_water_flooding).
Roydon Parish Council regularly report issues and request clearance of drains
etc. Sometimes we are unaware of issues, so please, if you note a blocked or
damaged drain etc, please log on to the Norfolk County Council website and
report this (and advise our clerk via email, please, so we can monitor this/chase
it up if required). Search Norfolk County Council (https꞉//www.norfolk.gov.uk),
select 'Roads and Transport', select 'Roads', select 'Report a Highways
Problem', then select from the numerous pictures categorising the various areas
NCC cover.
Hedges꞉ Just a reminder that front hedges, trees and shrubs should be cut
back away from the roads and pavements (bird nesting season has now
started). Consider how much growth could occur during the Spring and
Summer and allow for this, to prevent overhanging of pavements etc when
continued on page 23

Road Safety꞉ Speeding and inconsiderate driving is still occurring. Almost all
roads in Roydon are 30MPH. Please note the 2022 Highway Code changes and
drive slowly and carefully past pedestrians etc, particularly when there are
puddles and allow plenty of space.
Dog Fouling꞉ It is an offence not to pick up after your dog, whenever and
wherever it defecates out and about. Take the full poo bag home and dispose of
in your black bin, or dispose of it in a bin, NOT a bush!
Litter꞉ Please bin your litter or recycle it – don't throw it out the window of your
vehicle!
Grass Verges꞉ Please avoid parking on grass verges, as this causes damage,
loss of visibility for others and restrictions to the width of the road. Please utilise
your own plot for any additional parking i.e. a front garden, if your driveway is not
enough. In some instances, the damaged verges have added to the flooding of
the roads, as the dislodged soil has washed into drains causing them to silt up.
Where vehicles are forced to mount the verges to pass parked cars, this is risking
damage to the kerb drains.
Next Council Meetings꞉ Meetings are on Thursdays, starting at 7pm in Pott Row
Village Hall, on 9 May, 4 July, 5 September and 7 November 2024, unless
otherwise advised.
We had a busy morning on March 2nd and look forward to our next Coffee and
Cake session on Saturday 6th April. Spring is here!

Gayton United Football Club
As we approach the tail end of the of the season, the three teams have started to
pick up some vital points.
The firsts beat Buxton away and held on for an impressive point at home to North
Walsham. The firsts are still in the relegation zone but the upturn in form will give
them confidence in avoiding the drop in a highly competitive league this year.
The reserves have gained 6 points out of 12 losing two games very narrowly to
N.Walsham and Martham's reserve sides respectively. The performances
especially the work rate has been fantastic.
The A's won impressively at home to Shouldham and came from behind to beat
West Winch 3‑1, the A's look to finish as high as they can after a difficult start.
April means as a club we will be speaking to our current sponsors for their
continued support ‑ a big thanks to BTP Electrical, Direct Plants and TL Repairs
for their support in their first season supporting us.
In May we'll be releasing out sponsorship packages for the upcoming year and
we'd love any company or individual who wants to be part of the club to get in
touch with us to discuss joining our family.
In Mays addition we hope to have further positive details around results and our
community day.
Norfolk creative arts in Grimston is hosting its annual exhibition in Church hill
school, 71 Gayton Road from the 30th April to the 6th May ‑ 10am till 4pm daily.
The exhibition is a great opportunity to view a diverse range of art, all by local
talented artists, amateur and professional alike.
All the art is for sale and there is free parking and a cafe selling home made
cakes.

Not everyone can compost their garden waste, but for those who can a lot of
advice was given. The brown bin is the choice for non‑composters, and most of
what you put in that, is what goes on a compost heap.
Being an ex pest controller, one good piece of advice given, was to visit your
compost heap/bin on a regular basis, once a day if possible to avoid Rattus
norvegicus. Ratty the brown rat setting up home in the compost does not like to
be disturbed.
After our experts finished, they chose our Plant of the Month winners. This
month's winners were 1st Mr Steve Williamson. 2nd Sabina Root. 3rd Mrs Margaret
Gladman
.
Our next. Meeting is the Spring Show, which is when, who have grown Spring
Bulbs will bring them along to be judged.
A little tip to to try to slow them down if they are in pots, is to place them in a cool
shady place.
Finally, the Hog Roast, which we are looking forward to. Just to remind those who
are coming to this feast, to bring cutlery, a glass and something to put in the glass!

All start at 10.30am, as does our regular monthly coffee morning which will be
held in the Chapel on April 11th.
Our coffee morning and cake sale for Tapping House raised over £300, with
many thanks to all those who baked cakes, bought cakes and gave donations.
Now we are thinking ahead to FenFest where we will have more cakes for sale,
this time aiming to raise money for the charity Action for Children. We look
forward to seeing people there!
We are trying to stop the use of plastic flowers in the graveyard in recognition of
the urgent environmental crisis and the efforts being made by Christian
organisations and communities, churches and church schools, of all
denominations, to care for creation. We are therefore asking that plastic flowers,
or indeed anything plastic, are not put on graves. Fresh and silk flowers may be
placed on graves but we may remove dead flowers.
"Wreaths or cut flowers may be laid direct on any grave or in any vase authorised
by these regulations.
No artificial flowers (other than “silk” flowers i.e. having a mixture of
polyester/cotton) may be placed in the churchyard.
The PCC may remove flowers of whatever kind and wreaths at their discretion if
such flowers and wreaths have wilted or died or otherwise having regard to their
state."
