Hello All.

I take back all I said last month about Spring being here. As I write this, it feels like Winter
again! The front cover however should brighten us all up, what a cheeky hare peeping out.
Thank you Julie you caught him(or her) brilliantly.

Best wishes

PARISHIONERS

Dear Friends,
Welcome to May, already into the fifth month of the year, summer is on its way.
We have two Bank Holidays this month, long weekends, a chance to relax or
have a holiday.
I have recently returned from Hong Kong, an opportunity for me to visit family. A
long flight, thirteen hours in the air! The flightpath now has to avoid Russia, Iran
and Israel, so it has been made even longer. The huge planes carrying around
300 passengers are always full and have facilities such as 'in‑flight entertainment'
on individual seats. After watching two movies, I get a little fidgety and have to
move around, up and down the aisles getting some extra drinks, anything to
distract me from the remaining nine hours left on the flight. To be fair though I like
flying, I love travelling to 'far off' places. I love tracking the flight on the screen
and seeing the places we are travelling over at 38,000 feet in the sky, Northern
China, the Gobi Desert, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary …
What a wonderful world we live in! There are so many different places, huge
diversities and natural phenomena creating geographical sights of wonder and
awe.
Hong Kong is a huge mega city, high rise buildings towering into the skies which,
during typhoons sway slightly (not visibly though!) as a means of safety. People's
lives are lived in close proximity both at work and in communities. Yet you don't
have to travel far to find beautiful beaches and hillsides covered with shrubs,
where hiking and walking are real fitness opportunities.
However far I travel though, I am always pleased to be home in Norfolk, my roots
are firmly in this place.
Our churches are a continuing presence in our villages, they have been here for
many hundreds of years, dating back to around the eleventh and twelfth
centuries. As you travel around our countryside you can see many of our church
towers, a visible presence of Christianity and a special place in our communities.
Many of our churches are open all day, so when you have a few minutes to spare
do come inside. They are places of rest and quiet, places where we can come
together to be with God. In our Christian year, at the beginning of May, we have
Ascension Day, when Jesus was taken back into heaven, after his resurrection at
Easter. What better news could we have that Jesus returned to show us the way
to eternal life.
May is a time to look forward with hope and confidence of summer days, green
shoots emerging and our own lives fulfilled in love and peace with all. Hope you
enjoy the Bank Holidays. Rev'd Sue Martin

GreenFingers Gardening Club

Hi again to all GreenFingers members. My report today is of our Spring Show combined with
the Hogg Roast.
I have taken on the role of reporting our meetings, as our previous reporter of many years,
Mrs Rosemary De Whalley said she would like to step down. So on behalf of all members,
past and present, we would like to thank her for all her time and dedication to the role.
We still need volunteers to help with the Sandringham Flower Show, our Chairperson
Cynthia can tell you what it requires if anyone is interested. Your reward for for helping will
give you a free pass to the show, and your handiwork will not only be seen by thousands of
visitors to the show but by our King himself.

Now to our Spring Show, despite a lot of flowers being past their best, due to flowering early
16 people entered. Daffodils were the hardest to come by, as you will have noticed the
wonderful displays around our villages were just beginning to fade. I couldn't find 3 decent
ones anywhere (only joking).

Putting my pestie hat on again, one of a gardener's worst pest, the Monkjac does not have
daffodils on its vast menu
.
Here is the list of of winners who entered.
3 Daffodils. Mrs Margaret Gladman
3 Tulips, one variety. Mrs Sandra Rowson
3 Tulips, mixed. Mrs Veronica Stephans
Vase of spring flowers. Mrs Anne Fendley

The winner of the annual plant of the month trophy, the silver tray, was once again won by
Mrs Margaret Gladman. Thank you all who took part for putting on a fantastic show of colour.
Now to the highlight of the evening, the hogg roast, once again our local butchers, the
Elsegoods gave us another culinary treat. The hogg roast and salads followed by huge
wedges of apple pie and fruit salad. In between courses, Phil was doing his usual thing of
tempting us all to have seconds, or even 3rds. Over 40 members and some guests enjoyed
the feast served up by Phil and his assistant Jane. Thank you both for a wonderful meal and
what good value.

Before I sign off, may I just remind members if the forthcoming trip to Helminghall gardens
on June 11th. It's an all‑day event starting at 9.30am open to members and non‑members
£25 for coach and entrance to gardens. All meeting at Hudson Fen 9.30am. Ring Brian on
01485 600332 to book. Happy Gardening.

Gayton United Football Club
The first team unfortunately saw relegation be confirmed to division 3 at the in April for the
first time in 7 years. This was despite everyone involved's best effort. The reserves finished
3rd from bottom in their league as have the A team who are hopefully still in cup action by
the time of publication.

March's 100 club winner was Sam Barnes with April's yet to be drawn at the time of writing.

The club have gone under a massive reconstruction over the last two years with the club
rebuilding still after the previous regime. We are delighted to share that Holly Meadows FC
will continue to be a 'feeder' club for us as we create a pathway into our adults team. This
year we have seen a big rise in under 18s playing which we are delighted with ‑ this
includes 4 that have made first team appearances well done!

Off the pitch we continue to make progress, myself being promoted to joint first team
manager means that we'll have someone new come in and continue my work with the
reserves, a thankless task but we're hopeful of having the right person in to continue the
development of a young side.

We will be having a community day at Gayton Social club in the next couple of months. This
is an annual event which has live bands, food trucks and kids activities. A date is to be
confirmed which will be out in the next issue.

We are also reaching out to new potential sponsors to contact the club, we have a following
across all social media platform roughly 3k, with a reach of around 25k. Our packages start
from £75 with a renewal price of £25, arguably the best and cheapest price in local football.

Our 100 club continues to grow and we are thankful for all those that are in our club draw ‑
£5 per number for the chance to win £100, better odds than the lottery albeit a smaller prize

If you are interested in joining the family please drop myself or the club a message.

A View from Lankey Hill

In the April edition I concluded with my entry into Shuttleworth Agricultural

College. Since then, I have received an invitation to an old Students reunion on
Sunday 9th of June. This is just to spend the day at the college, along with old
friends, mainly to recall old memories and be remembered. I now relate some
here, if only to refresh my memory in time for Sunday 9th of June.

The National Diploma in Agriculture was a 2‑year course. I was there from
September 1967to July 1969. The first year was spoilt by a country wide
outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease. Being an Agricultural College strict
embargoes were placed on us. Many of our sporting fixtures were cancelled,
especially against other colleges. Wanting to continue my Rugby playing career,
I travelled back home to play for West Norfolk Rugby Club at Gatehouse Lane,
North Wootton. After this match, I had a quick drink (1 pint of beer) and a meal
of sausages and mash, and I drove back to college for the company of my new
college friends.

The second year at college was not hampered by any restrictions, and I was
elected Captain of the College Rugby team. This appointment coincided with
the arrival of a new College Principal, Mr John Scott. I'm afraid as the rugby side
I captained was unbeaten throughout the year, I was, as Captain to frequently be
called into Mr Scott's study to explain why he had received complaints of our bad
behaviour whilst outside the college, I now relate some of those events. Firstly,
the annual club dinner was held at an Hotel in Biggleswade. All went well until
near the end of the evening, some of us removed a weighing machine out of the
gents toilet, placed it on the pavement outside the hotel, and armed with plenty
of coins, invited people walking past to weigh themselves! Luckily Mr Scott
dismissed the complaints, but he was not so dismissive following the rugby trip
to Shropshire to play against another Agricultural College, named Harper
Adams. Beating them on the rugby field was followed by a long drinking session
in their college social bar. On the way out to get in to the that took us there was
long line of student's wellington boots. One of our side grabbed a nearby fire
extinguisher and filled the boots with foam. The next morning as Captain, I was
asked at lunchtime to visit Mr Scott's office. He promptly gave an invoice from
Harper Adams for the replacement of ten and one half of wellington boots. Mr
Scott was not amused when leaving his office I remarked that I didn't realise that
there was a one legged student at Harper Adams!

Enough now of my time at Shuttleworth College, but I must say my time there was most
enjoyable. Often going into Bedford I didn't realise at that time, the river running through the
town was the same one river that enters the Wash at Kings Lynn, the river Great Ouse.
From Lynn it flows due south until just before Ely it turns south‑west passing through
Huntingdon and St Neots, then flowing under the A1 motorway at the Black roundabout on
to Bedford.
As I write this it is Wednesday the 17th of April, and we are now experiencing one of the
latest Springs I can remember. Records of mine prove that the arrival of House Martins has
never been later, but I understand a few are appearing in Grimston. There has been very
little Sugar Beet drilled around here as Sugar Beed must be planted in good soil conditions,
drilling is done by very accurate planters, spacing the individual seeds several inches apart
(the days of 'chipping out' seedlings has long gone).

No doubt as soon as I take the May edition to the Editor, conditions will change. Talking
about the month of May, I shall be another year older.

We have reached the point in the year when we are ready to get planting and growing.
Thank you so much for your blue token votes at Tesco's and were delighted to be awarded
the £1500 grant towards developing the interior of our polytunnel!

We now have several raised beds within this fantastic space which will be enjoyed by our
children during playtimes, after‑school gardening club. We are also developing more
seating and workstations which will be helpful when we use the facility for our Science
lessons.
This term, children in Key Stage 1 will be comparing a range of flowering plants and
learning about their structure as well as observing how seeds and bulbs grow and mature.
The polytunnel will provide an ideal growing environment for a range of plants, allowing us
to demonstrate how plant need water, light and a suitable temperature to stay healthy.
Children will also be encouraged to make comparisons with contrasting environments and
discover the importance of water to life.

If you have any spare seeds seedlings or plants and you would like to donate them, do get
in touch by 01485 600241 or emailing office@hollymeadows.norfolk.sch.uk. we would be
very grateful!

Smiling is infectious
You catch it like the flu
When someone smiled at me today
I started smiling too
I walked around the corner
And someone saw me grin
When he smiled I realised
I had passed it on to him
I thought about the smile
And then realised its worth
A single smile like mine
Could travel round the earth
So if you feel a smile begin
Don't leave it undetected
Start an epidemic
And get the world infected.

May 26th ‑ service arranged by the Chapel regulars

Our coffee morning is on May 9th, like our services, it starts at 10.30am. All are welcome! And

Grimston CC Chairmans Report

As Chairman for over ten years now it is my pleasure to serve the club and be a part of a
very exciting time for us.
The club continues to grow at a phenomenal rate, with our adult's cricket provision
increasing by 300% ‑ we now have teams on Saturday, Sunday, and a Ladies Team. The
youth cricket offering has also increased so we are now fielding teams at U9, U11, and U13
– not to mention the fantastic ECB All Stars programme we are proud to deliver for 5‑8 Year
Olds.
Once again local businesses have stepped up to help us, with The Three Horseshoes
sponsoring the whole club for this season – we are proud to see every team turning out
each week in their Three Horseshoes kit, and would encourage the whole village to get
behind this fantastic local business.
We are also very lucky to have CB Gardens as primary sponsor for the Ladies Team –
Charlie is a local man and has thrown his support behind the burgeoning ladies section.
We are always looking for new sponsors, volunteers, and players, so please get in touch if
you would like to be involved, whether running the BBQ or playing on a weekend!
Once again, I would ask you to join me in getting behind the players and volunteers who are
making it all possible.
We are proud to be a community club, and look forward to seeing lots of you at the cricket
ground during the summer.
Kind regards,
Tim.

At our April meeting we had a very interesting visit from members of The Norfolk Writers'
Exchange who meet every month in Pott Row. Founded in 2016, the group acts as a place for
members to share their work in a supportive environment as well as offer tips to each other in the
process. Tim and friends read us examples of their work and explained the process they went
through in editing and publishing the anthology of their work.

Our next meeting is the annual discussion and voting for the latest national resolution to be
promoted by the WI. This year it is entitled 'Dental Health Matters'. We are all aware of the
chronic shortages of NHS dentists and the NFWI may campaign on this issue.

The voting will be followed by our usual 'Pudding Evening' where we are able to sample many
delicious puddings made by our members.
