Battens for Aluminium and Perspex.

The substrate

This method is suitable for prints mounted onto thin metals such as stainless steel, aluminium,
Dibond or Perspex. The important thing to remember is that these materials are still quite heavy
even though they are thin so strong materials and fixings need to be used.

Walls

Walls and exhibition boards vary in construction and it would be wrong to assume that one type of
fixing will fit all needs, however the method described here has worked with all situations I have
encountered so far.

Battens

These are made from 10mm thick MDF. Boards of MDF are cut down into strips of 2 inch thickness.
This is divisible into the 4x8ft board which is a standard timber sheet size. If you buy the board from
a merchant that can cut this for you for transport, then at least 2x4 ft squares would be useful.

Only 1/3 rd of the finished strips will be straight cuts and 2/3 rds will have an angled cut. If your
merchant can do this too then all the better. You will however be introduced to the 3-d workshop on
the ground floor where you can cut board.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

MDF for battens (10mm)

Water-based varnish to seal the battens for the Velcro to stick

Drill and countersink bit

Wood screws, about 1inch

Rawlplugs for stone or brick walls

Heavy Duty Velcro, available from DIY stores by the metre. Cut into 30mm strips

Spirit level

Screwdriver- preferably a cordless one.
