correct answers (A, B, C, or D) for questions 21 and 22. (1.5 pts)
One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water. Having clean
drinking water is a basic human right. However, acid rain, industrial pollution and garbage have made many sources
of water undrinkable.
Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pools of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the largest
lakes in the world. It contains a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not exist
anywhere else in the world. Yet, they are being destroyed by the massive volumes of industrial effluent which pour
into the lake every day. Even though laws have been made, the governments do not have the power to enforce them.
Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the world's water surface, but it
is the dumping ground for 50% of all marine pollution. Almost sixteen countries regularly throw industrial wastes a
few miles offshore.
Water is free to everyone. A few years ago, people thought that the supply of clean water in the world was limitless.

Every one of us produces garbage of one kind or another. Some of the garbage is thrown into the
sea. Some is burnt or buried under the ground. Every year we need to find about 800,000 cubic
meters of empty land just to bury the garbage. This is the same as filling one football stadium with
garbage up to 20 meters high!
This garbage damages the environment. Although a lot of garbage is buried in the ground, some of
it gets blown about in the wind. Also, when garbage is burnt, poisonous gases are given off into the
air. The garbage thrown into the sea will pollute the water.
What can we do about these problems? Well, one very easy answer is to produce less garbage. We
can recycle things made from glass and paper as well as tin cans. People can refuse to take the
plastic bags from the shops and supermarkets by bringing with them their own bags or baskets when
they go shopping.
The government should tell people about the dangers of the pollution caused by garbage. Education
is perhaps the most important factor for keeping our environment healthy for the future.

Last Saturday evening I got home from work. I was happily making my tea when all of a sudden I was
surrounded by complete darkness. The lights went out! The oven stopped working and my phone was no longer
charging. I tried to fix it but I soon realised that I couldn’t. I sat down to eat my half-cooked dinner in the dark. And
then I wasn’t really sure what to do. My typical evening is spent watching the TV and scrolling through social media.
That night, this wasn’t possible. I couldn’t even read a book as I wasn’t prepared with candles and matches. I couldn’t

minute, for example when waiting for friends. I usually have my lights on, even in the middle of the day when I don’t
