Sample Responses
1 Work with Student B/A to discuss some exhibitions and decide which to go to together.

Student A/B:

Expected Exchange:
Student A: Hi. Let’s go to the graphic novel exhibition at the library.
Student B: Really? I’m not sure I want to go.
Student A: I think you’ll like this one. We can learn how to design characters. You like drawing, don’t you?
Student B: Yes I do and I’ve never tried doing pictures for books.
Student A: And there’s a discussion with some authors. I’d love to meet them.
Student B: How much does it cost? Do we have to pay?
Student A: Only if you want to go to the discussions. It’s £5 for students. I don’t think that’s bad.
Student B: What do you mean, not bad?
Student A: I meant that £5 isn’t a lot of money, is it?
Student B: Yes, but I spent all my money on a new bike last month. I’d like to go to this art exhibition and it’s much
cheaper.
Student A: What art exhibition is that?
Student B: It’s contemporary watercolour paintings at the museum gallery. We do some painting ourselves too.
Student A: Personally I’m not very interested in watercolours.
Student B: But you also get to meet the artists. That would be interesting, wouldn’t it?
Student A: And how much does this all cost?
Student B: It’s cheaper than yours. It’s only £2.00 to go. That’s all.
Student A: Well, it sounds quite good. What do you think we should do, then?
Student B: Go to the art one, of course!
Student A: Look, if I pay for you, would you go the graphic novel one with me?
Student B: That’s very kind of you. I can pay you back next month, if that’s okay.
Student A: No worries. It’s a present from me and I don’t want to go alone.

Expected Answers to Questions:

1 I’d like to visit the graphic novel exhibition because I love books and think it would be very interesting.
2 Because they are interested in what is on show at the exhibition and it’s a way of learning more about the subject and
perhaps meeting other people with the same interests.
3 I went to see an exhibition of Paul Nash paintings at Tate Britain in London. It was very interesting.
4 I enjoy reading nineteenth-century novelists like Charles Dickens, the Bronte sisters and Thomas Hardy as I find it
fascinating to read about how life was back then.

2 Look at the photo and describe it to Student B/A.

Student A:

Expected Response:
I can see some people who seem to be waiting for a bus. They’re all standing and the first man is looking at his phone.
He’s got his hand in his pocket and is wearing a grey business suit, so he’s probably a businessman or works in an office.
The lady behind him is wearing a pink jumper and she’s got long blonde hair. She looks quite relaxed and is looking at
the bus. The man in the middle is wearing a T-shirt and I think he’s a student. I think he’s got headphones around his
neck. He’s looking up at something and is probably bored waiting for the bus. The lady behind him is looking down at
something and her posture tells me that she might be tired and bored waiting for the bus. None of them have got any
strong facial expressions so I think that they know that they have to be patient and wait.

Student B:

Expected Response:
My picture shows some people visiting an art gallery or museum. In the background there are five people: a woman with
a child to the left, two men in the middle and a man on the right. I can’t see their faces but they are all looking at
paintings but their body postures show that they are very focused. Everyone in the room seems to be very interested in
the paintings. We can see that the pictures show the sea or a lake and some trees. The pictures are black and white. I
think that this is gallery of modern art.

Student A/B:

Expected Answers to Questions:

1 It can be very important if someone is very angry or upset, for example. If you can understand from their body
language that they are upset then you can change your behaviour to improve the situation or help the person.
2 I give my best friends a hug when we meet as we feel like a family of friends, but I don’t usually hug other friends
because we’re not so close.
3 I have to wait for lots of things, for example the bus, lunch in the canteen, my parents to make dinner. I don’t mind
waiting in queues if it’s not too long and if I have my phone with me so I don’t get bored.
