The firste?fortsto developstandardsfor compressedgas cylinder

valve threadsfollowedimmediately afterWorld War 1, and were inspired
by the difficultiesencounteredboth by industryand the militaryservices
becauseof the multiplicityof connectionsthat were then in use.

‘hroughthe activityof the Gas CylinderValveThreadCommitteeof the

Co~ressed Gas Manufacturers’Association,Inc., materialprogresswas
mde throughthe years that follo.w$d,with the resultthat, when the
UnitedStatesbecame involvedin WorldWar II, the gas industriesthemselves
had materiallyimprovedthis situation.Severalof the compressedgas
industrieshad achievedvirtualstandardization at tremendouscost for
replacementof valveequipment. Their standards, however, were not completely

forc!alized
nor fullycoordinatedwith other relatedstandards.!!uchof the
progressbetweenWorld War I and WorldWar II was the resultof interestin
the problemby the FederalSpecifications Floard.

The circumstances surroundingindustrialand militaryusers of

campressedgasesduringWorld ?ar II broughtintoclear fecus the need
for accelerationof the standardizing pro,ject
for cylindervalve threads.
They creatednot only the necessitybut also a splendidopportunityfor the
compressedgas industry,the Militaryservices,and otherFederalagencies
to study cooperatively the standardizingproblemsof outlet.
valve threads.
These studiesresultedin closerdefinitionand appreciationof each
valve outlet and in a more balancedrelationshipbetweenthe many types
and sizes.

When the StandardsAssociationsrepresent ing GreatBritain,Canada,

● and the UnitedStatesmet in Ottawain October1945to considerunification
of screw threads,a fairlywell developedplan for standardization of
compressedgas cylindervalve threadswas presentedto the Conference
by the Valve ThreadStandardization Committeeof the CompressedGas
Manufacturers’ Association,Inc. (CGMA). These proposedstandards
representedthe experienceand knowledgeof compressed~s nmufacturers,
valve manufacturers, and the needs and requirements of variedusers of gas
cylindervalves,includingthe Militaryservicesand otherFederalagencies.
Approvalof these standardsto the extentto which they were then developed
was given by the U.S. Departmentof Commerce, the U.S. Army, and the U.S.
Navy throughthe Interdepartmental ScrewThreadCommitteefollowinga joint
,. meeting with the representatives of CGMA in August 1945. Much progresswas
made later in that year at the CanadianSectionMeetingof CGMA tending
to unifyUnitedStatesand Canadianpractices.

DuringJanuary1946,throughconferencebetweenrepresentatives of CGMA
Valve ThreadStandardizationCcmmitteeand the InterdepartmentalScrewThread
Committeein Washington,agreementswere reachedthat resultedin final
apprOVd of considerableadditionalgas cylindervalve threaddata. Thesedata
were includedin 1950supplementto HandbookH28. The 1957 issueof H28
includedmore detaileddata on outletand inletconnectionsthan were
previouslyshown.

The first issueof FED-STD-H28/9, in accordancewith GovernmentPO1icy,

removedthe detailsof the connections. These were replacedby reference

● to the Compressed-Gas

yoke types. For

Association(formerlyCGNA) Standardv-1-1977.
This standardincludednot only threadedconnect
medicalgas cylindervalve
ions but also unthreaded
connections,a pin index
systemfor the yoke type connect ions is used to preventcross-connections
betweengasses. Only when the pins in a yoke correspondto the holes
in a valve will a gas tight seal be possible. This systemwas submitted
to the InternationalOrganizationfor Standardization (ISO)Technical
Committee58 and was adoptedin the standard1S0 407-1983.

FED-STD-H28/9Awas preparedby the DefenseIndustrialSupplyCenter

(DLA-IS). It updatesFED-STD-H28/9 to be in consonancewith the Compressed
Gas Association(CGA) StandardV-1-1987. The followingsignificantchanges
in the threadedconnectipns include:

(1) Additionof designformulasfor NGO seriesthreads.

(2) Additionof data for sizes 1.040-14NcKI-RH/LH-LXT,
1.045-14NG&RH/LH-INT,1.103- 14NG0-RH/LH-EXT,1.108-14NG0-RH/LH-INT,
1..120-
14NG0-RH/LH-En, 1.125-14NG0-RH/LH-TJT
, and 3/4-14NGf(c1)-5s
Diameterdata for 3/4-14NGT (Cl)mastergageswere changedto agreewith
long threadsspecified.

3. Definitions.Screw threadtermsapplicableto this standardare

● definedin FED-STD-H28/l and as noted in this document. Exceptionsare

for taper threadswhere non-standardsymbolshave been used. Theseare
definedin Figure9.3.

4. Genera1 requirements.
..
4.1 Outlet connections. Valve outlet connect
ionsand their threadsare
listedin Table 1X.1. Connectionsare detailedin ANSI/CSA/CGAStandardV-1.
Thread requirements
appear in subsection5.1.

4.1.1 The threadson the outletsare separatedinto four basic divisions-

internaland external(INT and EXT), as well as right-handand left-hand
(RH and LH). h!ithineach of the four divisions, furtherseparationis made
by varyingthe pitch and diameterof the threads. The diameterswithin
each divisionare so spacedthat adjoiningsizeseitherwill not enteror
will not,engage.

4.1.2 As far as practicable, the designof connectionsand assignmentof

the connectionsto gaseshas been made so as to preventthe“interchangeof
connectionswhichmay result in a hazard. l,liththe exceptionof outlets
havingtaperpipe threadswhich seal at the threads, each outletprovides
for screw threadswhich do not seal but merelyholdthe nippleagainstits
seat. These screw threadshave the Unifiedform but are not in the
regularseries.

4.1.3 Past practicehas firmlyestablishedmany outletconnections

● for specificgasesor groupsof gasesand in many cases theseconnections
were retained. Sma11 differencesin the threadsand otherelementsof the
same connect
ion were reconciled intoone form and size, properlyrecorded
and defined. By adheringto existingoutletswherepracticable,it was
possibleto put the new standardsystemintoeffectwithoutthe
inconvenienceand expenseof a cumbersomeand costlychangeover.
Alternateand co-standardshave been establishedfor some gases.

4.1.4 Keepingthe establishedpracticein mind when classifyingand

assigningthe gases to their outlets,an effortwas made to followa plan
wherebyright-handthreadswould be used for non-fuelgasesand for
water-pumpedgases,whereasleft-handthreadswould be used for ~el gases
and for oil-pumpedgases. These left-handthreadsare identifiedby a
grooveon the hexagonnut. An externa1 threadis used on the valve in
most cases, but some importantgroupsof gaseshave an internalthreadon
the valve.

FED.STD.H28/9A

4.1.5 In the standardization of compressedgas valve outlet

connections, more than one outlet is providedfor some gases. To provide
interchangeabilityof equipmentfor the same gas, adaptersmay be required.
See ANSI/CSA/CGA
StandardV-1.

U.1.6 The maximumradiusof any part of the valve from its centerline
has been specifiedto insureclearancefor the smallest(3 l/8-in. )
standardcylindervalve protecting cap.

4.2 Inletconnections. Valve inletconnect ion”threadseriesare listed

in Table 1X.2. Threadrequirementsfor these seriesappearin subsection5.2.
Other generalinformationappearsin ANSI/CSA/CGAStandardV-1.

4.3 Safetydevicethreads. The safetydeviceson high pressuregas

cylindervalvesare providedwith righthand threadsof the Unifiedform,
19 threadsper inch. Threadrequirementsappear in subsect,
ion 5.3.

5. Detailed requirements.

For the NGO threadan allowance(minimumclearance)of from 0.0020to
0.0050 in. betweenthe matingparts is establishedto providethe desired
loosenessof fit at the threads, and to assureinterchangeabilitybetween
. productsof differentmanufacturers. The tolerancesare in the directionof
greaterloosenessand are determinedon the basisof NS-3 data,exCePtfor
the major diameterof the externalthreadsfor which the toleranceis limited
to 0.0050 in. insteadof 0.0098in. Table 1X.4 liststhe calculationformulas
used for determiningsize limitsof threadcharacteristics.Table 1X.5

5.2.9 Gaqinq of internalthreadpitch diameter.

5.2.9.1 Gaq rmeration. lb check the pitch diameterof the internal

thread, the thr~dd plug gage shown in figure9.10 is used. ‘lhisgage is
known as a primarygage since the readingtakenon the r.anp
will be needed
for use when additionalgaging is done.

a. Both heads are screwedin simultaneously, with the precaution

that the ~ sectionadvanceswith sane clearanceaheadof the L1
sectionto preventlocking. Both sectionsshouldbe screwedin to about
the same tightness. For the pitch di.a.mter
taperof the taPPedhole to be
acceptable, the upperband shouldnot be aboveor below the edge of the
leek sleeve.

b. To measure the effectivepitchdiameterof the threadat the

5.2.9.2 Gaqe settinqad checkinq.

a. ‘Ibset the ramp scale, the precedureof 5.2.9.la is followedwith

rq scale is set to zero.
b. After the ~ plug ramp scale is set in “a” above, the depth
scale for the ~ plug is rotatedso that the witnesslinesare al.igned
at the upper edge of the tileranceband. If We @ edge of the band does
not coincideexactlywith the edge of the lock sleevewhen both witness
linesare aligned,it is evidentthatone of the PW sectionshas Wrn
