END SEMESTER EXAMINATION
Duration: 2 hrs
Date: 21- April -2022 Maximum Marks: 20
Time: 14:00 to 16:00

Answer ALL questions; Assume

missing data, if any.

1/ Show that most of the values of an

exponentially distributed random variable are smaller than
the mean value.
[2 marks
2.)Given the system dependent Poisson arrival rate and departure rate, with suitable
assumptions,
derive the following:
aThe steady state probability of n customers in the
system of a general Poisson queuing
model.
[1 mark]
b. The expected number of customers in the system and the
expected waiting time in
queue of an (M/M/1): (GD/infinity/infinity) queuing model. (2 marks]
C.The expected number of customers in the system and the expected waiting time in the
system of an (M/M/1): (GD/N/infinity) queuing model. [2 marks
3An orthodontist schedules patient for a routine check-ups every 15 minutes and limits the total
number of patients to 10 a day. It takes 12 min to examine the first
patient, but because the
dentist tires quickly, each subsequent exam takes one minute
longer than the one before it.
Determine the average time that a patient spends in the dentist's office, both waiting and
being
examined, assuming that each patient arrives precisely when scheduled. 2 marks]
4 Describe the following: [5 marks
a Markovian process
b Queuing behavior: Renege, Balking and Jockeying
Qucue discipline: FIFO, LIFO, PRIORITY, RANDOM
d. Kendall's notation

C.The probability of n customers remaining after t time units in a pure death model

5.The state transition diagram given below
represents the transiion probabilifics of ai inventery
system. ASsume that the stochastic
process has the Markovian property. If the initial state is
1, determine the absolute
probabilities of the three states of the system after 4, and 8-time
intervals.

6. Solve the following queuing model problems: [4 marks]

a. The emergency section ofa hospital receives on an average 96 patients in 24 hours.
On an average a patient can be given 10 minutes of active attention and the section can
handle only one patient at a time. what is the average number of patients in the section
and those waiting for attention? Wha' is the average waiting time per patient and the
average time which could be devoted to a patient?

b. A railway station has three platforms. Trains stream in at an average rate of 6 per hour
and the station can handle them on n average of 12 per hour. Assuming Poisson
arrivals and exponential service distribution, what are the probabilities for various
numbers of trains in the system? What is the average number of trains in the
system?
What is the effective arrival rate? Wiat is the average waiting time for a train at the

station?
