Project Definition:
A project is a set of tasks which must be completed in order to arrive at
a particular goal or outcome.

A complex, non routine, one-time effort limited by time, budget, resources,


and performance specifications designed to meet customer needs.

Major Characteristics of a Project


– Hasan established objective.
– Has a defined life span with a beginning and an end.
– Requires across-the-organizational participation.
– Has specific time, cost, and performance requirements.

Depending on the size and scope of the project, these tasks may be
simple or elaborate, but all projects can be broken down into objectives
and what needs to be done to achieve them
• A project is “a temporary endeavor undertaken to accomplish a
unique product or service”
(PMBOK® Guide 2000, p. 4)

• Attributes of projects
– unique purpose
– temporary
– require resources, often from various areas
– should have a primary sponsor and/or customer
– involve uncertainty
Project management Definition:
The coordination of people, funds and resources, tasks, and approvals
required to accomplish an objective.

It includes developing project plans and providing oversight in their execution


to assure resources are used as planned, timelines are met, and the desired
outcomes are achieved.”

Project management is “the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and


techniques to project activities in order to meet project requirements” (PMI*,
Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), 2000, p. 6)

The art of organizing, leading, reporting and completing a project through


people .

The project management team is responsible for determining what ideas and
practices are appropriate for any given project

• Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and


techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements.

• Project management is accomplished through the appropriate


application and integration of the project management processes

effectively and efficiently.
Benefits of an Integrative Approach to Project Management

Integration (or centralization) of project management provides senior


management with:

– An overview of all project management activities

– A big picture of how organizational resources are used

– A risk assessment of their portfolio of projects

– A rough metric of the firm’s improvement in managing projects


relative to others in the industry.

A program is defined as a group of related projects, managed in a coordinated way
to obtain benefits not available from managing them individually.

• Portfolio Management
A portfolio refers to projects, programs, subsidiary portfolios, and operations
managed as a group to achieve strategic objectives.
