3.0 GEORADAR SURVEY

3.1. Objective and Scope of Work

The purpose of this georadar measurement activity is to obtain information about

objects below the surface, whether it pipes or other obstacles. The depth can be
measured up to 10m. The location of georadar survey is in the Pertamina RU-V
Balikpapan. At the refinery, georadar survey carried out on an area of
approximately 75.5 hectares corresponding to the limits on the figure below.

3.2. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

3.2.1. GPR Methodology

GPR is one of Geophysics methods which studies subsurface condition based on

electromagnetic properties by using radio wave with the frequency of 30 – 1000
MHz and can detect electrical permittivity parameters (ε), conductivity (σ) and
magnetic permeability (μ). GPR can be referred to as electromagnetic reflection
method for utilizing the properties of electromagnetic radiation similar to the
reflection on seismic wave method. GPR is used in various applications, including
soil stratigraphy, bedrock fracture mapping, subsurface utility search and
exploration of minerals such as coal.
The working principle of the GPR device is by transmitting the RADAR waves
(Radio Detection and Ranging) into the targeted medium and then the waves will
be reflected back to the surface and received by the receiver, the result then
shows various objects which can be detected and recorded in the radargram. The
working mechanism of GPR and recording radargram example is shown in Figure
below.

Figure 3.2 GPR working mechanism

In georadar data acquisition, there are several types of antenna configurations, i.e.
Continuous Reflection Profiling (CRP), Common Midpoint (CMP) and Radar
Tomography. Each has a function and purpose, adjusted to the target
acquisitiondata. In this project we use Continuous Reflection Profiling (CRP)
antenna configuration for our georadar survey, where the transmitter and receiver
antenna mounted at a fixed distance with continuous data sampling.

Figure 3.3 GPR antenna configuration types

Detecting an object requires differences in electrical parameters from the medium

which is passed by the radar wave. The differences are electric permittivity,
conductivity and magnetic permeability.
The electromagnetic properties of some material depend on its composition and
water content where both of them are the main influence on radar wave velocity
propagation and the attenuation of electromagnetic wave in the material. Radar
wave velocity in some medium depends on speed of light in vacuum (c = 0.3
m/ns), relative dielectric constant of the medium (εr) and relative magnetic
permeability (μr).The electromagnetic waves can be explained by Maxwell’s
equations which mathematically explain electromagnetism principles and
constitutive equations relations that is an equation which links Maxwell’s equations
with Earth medium.
In understanding the working principle of electromagnetic waves, the first thing we
need to know is the four Maxwell’s Equations. These Maxwell’s equations
describe the physical relationships in electromagnetic waves. The four equations
are:

4.0 CONCLUSION

4.1. Georadar Data Acquisition

At data acquisition stage, the georadar survey in RU-V Balikpapan area for Area
2, Area 3, Area 4, Area 5, New Pipe Rack Route, Pipe Sleeper nearby Wax Plant,
Jetty 7, and CDU V is carried out using a georadar equipment with 200 MHz and
300 MHz frequency. The 200 MHz and 300 MHz frequency are targeted to
produce detailed image onshore such as pipes, concretes and obstacles with
penetration up to 10 m depth.
The result of the survey line in all area is not entirely according to survey plan due
to some obstruction on the survey location such as concretes, scrap, mound, and
pipe sleeper.

4.2. Data Processing

After data acquisition we acquired raw data in *.dt format for georadar instrument
with 200 MHz frequency and *.sgy format for Zond. Later, both data format will be
processed in data proccesing using ReflexW software.
At data processing stage we used frequency filt
ering in order to obtain data corresponding to the target frequency of the operated
device. Noise removal is also used to clean up the data from unwanted signals,
and singal amplification to clarify the anomaly signal so we can read and interpret
easily.

Here are the data processing stages that we do to the georadar data:

Figure 4.1 Flowchart of georadar data processing

From the results of georadar data processing that has been done, the data is
ready to read and interpreted.

4.3. Georadar Data Interpretation

The result from georadar data that have been processed then carried to
interpretation stage. The interpretation process is based on phenomenon and
anomaly that appear on the image of georadar data. The parameters we used to
indentify georadar data in this interpretation are:
1. Amplitude uniformity
2. The speed of propagation
3. Wave continuity
4. Form of response wave (reflection, refraction and diffraction)
5. Color on the radargram
We already compare the georadar result to as-built drawing from WIKA (Doc.
RDMP-WKA-DWG-50-0027-A3: Layout Demolish Bangunan Rev.3 sheet 13). We
found that there are some mismatched result between LAPI drawing result and
WIKA as-built drawing(Fig. 4.2).

Figure 4.2 Comparison between A. LAPI Drawing Result and B. As-Built Drawing by
WIKA

We interpreted the radargram based on their response in reflecting wave to

the receiver. In georadar method, there are many kinds of object that give
similar response. Therefore we need secondary data to verify the object
(excavation by manual digging).
The interpretation result is presented in form of image drawing contained in
the appendix of this report. For better resolution, please refer to 26070-203-
CG00-J9330: Book 2 Part 2B Object Mapping Drawing.
Here is the conclusion of the georadar data that have been interpreted:

4.3.1. Data Interpretation Result at Area 1 RU-V Pertamina Balikpapan

Figure 4.3 Layout of Area 1

According to data processing results. In Area 1, there are many anomalies shown
in difraction, pull up, and pull down form on radargram. First category for the 0-6 m
depth, there is a sight of dominant pipeline distribution, this anomaly shown
diffraction form in radargram. The pipeline position found in the certain location
and mostly found in the north side where there are so many installations of some
equipment. The pipe has a diameter of ± 20-28 inches with average long of ± 48
meters. The depth of the pipeline around 1-4 meters. For the detail position and
dimension will be explained as following figure and table.
In Area 1 part 1 for the obstacle category with 0-6 meters in depth, there is a sight
of dominant obstacles, this interpretation based on pull up anomaly form on
radargram. Those obstacles consist of metal scrap. The obstacles position found
in the certain location and mostly found in the west side which is there are so
many installation of some equipments. The obstacle has a variative in volume .The
depth of the obstacles around 1-4 meters

4.3.5. Data interpretation result at Area 5 RU-V Balikpapan

Figure 4.14 Distribution map of Pipelines and Scrap Metal in Area 4

This is the largest Area in GPR Plan Survey. Based on the results of georadar
survey. The obstacle in this Area is dominated by pipelines, metal obstacle, and
concrete in various directions. This interpretation based on the radargram showing
so many diffraction waves, pull up, and pull down anomaly. There are few parts of
area 5 that has wood obstacle, which is located along line USL-01 to USL-07, at
around 20-30m from the West start of the line, at depths ranging from 1-4m. For
concrete, there is a huge slab suspected lying underneath the soil layer in shallow
depth, spreading all the way from line USL-01 to USL-10 length 30 to 75m, with
thickness reaching up to 1,5m The picture below shows the area where obstacles
were located.

In this Area, the survey plan is designed by crossing pipe rack direction with
interval between lines 50 meters. Georadar equipment frequently received strong
wave responses at depth ±2 meters. This response we interpreted as active cable
because the strong difraction has been detected. This response is frequently
detected nearby Area 2, HCC, and Wax Plant. In addition, there are few pipes
detected at nearby HSE Office. Between existing building and existing pipe
sleeper. These are following figure and table in order to give the details about the
anomalies.

4.3.7. Data interpretation result at CWI Route RU-V Balikpapan

In this area, there were two pipelines whose direction is east-west. These two
pipes are intersected by instalation of sheetpile. By using fourty megaheartz
frequency we could detect these two pipes in radargram which are shown as
strong difraction at depth five meters in subsurface. This following figure and table
will give the details of the pipes.

Balikpapan

This area is one the location where new piperack will be built here. We designed
the survey lines crossing and parallel with the pipe sleeper. By seeing the strong
difraction and some of them are shown as pull up anomaly, so we interpret the
pipelines, metal obstacles, and active electrical cable burried along this pipe
sleeper area. The following figure and table will give the details of them.

5.0 RECOMMENDATION

Based on our research of object mapping by using ground penetrating radar and
microgravity, we can get mapping of obstacle position and depth around refinery
area RU-V PT. Pertamina Balikpapan. This result could be one of reference for
civil engineer in building any construction by taking notice to shallow subsurface
circumstances.
GPR results only show active cable. Need further verification to identify passive
cable (verification should refer to As-Built Drawing issued by RU-V). As for pipe,
GPR couldn’t detect whether the pipe is still in service or not (need verification by
manual digging with RU-V supervision).
Need further study to determine pipeline and cable relocation.
