1.2 Purpose of Geotechnical Investigation

Purpose of Geotechnical investigation is to conduct soil investigation for the site

where building construction needs to take place.

The activity comprises of soil exploration and determining suitability of the site for

proposed construction. It mainly helps in estimating which type of foundation is

required or what safety measures should be taken. The effort and detail of

geotechnical site investigation is to obtain sufficient and correct site information so as

to select and design the depth and diameter of piles in this case.

In general, geotechnical investigations provide the following:

1. Information to determine the type of foundation required (shallow or deep).

2. Information to allow the geotechnical consultant to make a recommendation on the

allowable bearing capacity of the soil.

3. Sufficient data/ laboratory tests to make settlement and swelling predictions.

4. Location of the groundwater level.

5. Information so that the identification and solution of excavation problems can be

made.

6. Recommendation regarding soil improvement if required.

CHAPTER NO. 2

FIELD INVESTIGATION & LAB TESTING

2.1 General

This chapter mainly deals with the activities performed in the field to acquire the

subsurface information of existing soils / rock present at the proposed project site and

lab activities for computation of different soil parameters.

2.2 Field Exploration

2.2.1 Drilling of Borehole:

Exploration of site subsurface conditions was conducted at site through drilling of (03)

boreholes up to 100ft depth, below existing ground level at location marked in

borehole layout plan.

Drilling was carried out utilizing motorized percussion with the possibility of continuous

sampling at different depths and at each litho-logical change of the strata.

2.3 Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs)

Standard penetration test was carried out on site in each borehole. The split spoon

was driven with the 140 lb hammer falling from 30 in height and the number of blows

was counted, applied in each increment until the full penetration of 18 in (450 mm)

was achieved.

Flat No. 205 & 206, Afzal Tower, Behind Shahab Ortho-Hospital, Phase III Chowk,
Peshawar. Email: gsk.engineerz@gmail.com, 0333-912-6118, 091-584-1515
Report No. 9650/GSK

The procedure was repeated after every 5ft (1.5 m) due to homogeneous strata, or

even at very stratum change. Number of blows for each 6 in (150 mm) penetration

was recorded. The blows for the last 300 mm of penetration (12 in) were added to

compute the penetration resistance N. Details are shown in the borehole log. Number

of blows was later corrected for 60% efficiency for a hand operated US Donut

hammer, for the computation of bearing capacity.

2.4 Sampling

 Undisturbed samples; for computation of shear strength parameters

 Disturbed samples; For identification and index property testing purposes at various depths.

Representative samples were placed in sealed plastic bags and core boxes and then

transported to the laboratory for further testing.

2.5 Groundwater and Cavities

Ground water was not encountered throughout drilling depth. No rock, cavities were

noticed within the drilled depth of boreholes.

Report No. 9650/GSK

2.6 Laboratory Activities

The following tests were performed to evaluate the engineering properties of the soils

and rocks influencing the performance of the proposed structure:

1- Determination of Natural moisture contents & Bulk Densities

Moisture content of the collected soil samples was determined at site and also in laboratory. Soil

weights were taken on site and dried in lab. Also speedy moisture tester was used upon receiving

the samples. Bulk densities were computed from the Undisturbed samples collected at various

depths, which were later used in the computation of shear strength parameters & bearing

capacities.

2- Classification of Soil

This comprised of gradation tests and computation of atterberg’s limits. The soil received

was pulverized, washed and dried, making it ready for the mentioned tests to determine

the soil type. Later the soil was sieved through sieve No. 40, so as to make it in use for

cassagrade’s apparatus and also for making threads of 1/8 inch dia.

3- Direct Shear Test

For the soil being sandy and gravelly in nature, the preferred way to compute the shear strength parameters is

direct shear tests, to be conducted on disturbed samples. Parameters computed were further used in

terzaghi’s equation for bearing capacity calculation.

BEARING CAPACITY CALCULATIONS & GEOTECHNICAL

ANALYSIS

4.1 Bearing capacity analysis

Following approaches were utilized to calculate the bearing capacity:

i. from c & 

ii. from CPT / SPT

iii. from SPT at constant settlement

4.1.1 Utilizing the bearing capacity Equations (from ‘c’ & ‘):

The bearing capacity was calculated using the shear test parameters of cohesion and

angle of internal friction and the soil density of the specimens extracted from the

boreholes. The following well known Terzaghi‟s equation with correction terms

suggested by Meyerhof can be used to calculate the bearing capacity of rectangular

foundation of any sides ratio B:L

Qu =1.3𝑐𝑁𝑐+𝑞𝑁𝑞𝑅𝑤1+0.4 γ𝐵𝑁γ𝑅𝑤2
where:

C = Cohesion of soil,  = unit weight of soil, D = depth of footing, B= width of footing

C,Ø – Strength parameters of the soil below foundation level.L – Length of foundation.

Nc, Nq, Nγ – Bearing capacity coefficients dependent on the angle of internal friction

of the soil below foundation level (dimensionless).

CHAPTER NO.05

CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 Engineering Recommendations

As a result of field and laboratory activities carried out and the analysis of the

available data and test results

5.1.1 Parameters for Design

Allowable bearing capacity recommended at various depths is given as;

 2.30 TSF at 16ft depth.

 2.75 TSF at 24ft depth.

 3.15 TSF at 30ft depth.

5.1.2 Recommendations

 It is recommended to compact the surface prior to laying foundation.

 For deeper excavations such as till 24ft to 30ft depth, the best suited procedure is

to provide sheeting / retention to soil prior to excavation. This can be done by

providing Secant Piles, designed properly by geotechnical engineer.

Report No. 9650/GSK

5.2 Drainage of the Site

It is recommended to design an effective rainwater drainage system to get rid of

the consequences of the rainwater percolation into the layers (i.e. provision of

parametric drains). The site should be graded so as to direct rainwater and water

away from all planned structures.

5.3 Materials for Backfill

In general, materials for the backfilling should be granular, not containing rocks or

lumps over 15 cm in greatest dimension, free from organic matter, with plasticity index

(PI) not more than 9%. The backfill material should be laid in lifts not exceeding 25 cm

in loose thickness and compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density

at optimum moisture content as determined by modified compaction test (Proctor)

(ASTM D-1557).

5.4 Site Class

The on-site soils are classified as „SC Soil Profile‟ based on the N-values obtained from

SPT.

Report No. 9650/GSK

5.5 Seismic Considerations

As per Pakistan Building Code, the site is being situated in Peshawar. Peshawar is in

seismic Zone 2B with ground acceleration ranging from 0.16g to 0.24g.

5.6 Limitations

Finally, it should be noted that the results and recommendations of this report are

solely based on the collected samples from the drilled boreholes on December, 2020

and assuming that the subsurface conditions do not significantly deviate from those

encountered.

CHAPTER NO. 06
TESTING METHODOLOGIES

The following tests were performed following ASTM standards to evaluate the

engineering properties of the soils and rocks influencing the performance of the

proposed structure:

1- Natural moisture contents were determined in accordance with ASTM D-2216.

2- Partical Size Distribution in accordance with ASTM D422, D1140.

3- Direct Shear Test ASTM D-3080

6.1 Moisture Content

To determine the moisture content of soils, the soil sample was dried at a temperature

of 105°C to 110°C for about 24 hours. The loss in weight of the soil sample

represented the weight of moisture in the soil. The moisture content of the soil to the

dry weight of soil in percentage is the moisture content of the testing soil. This test

was performed in accordance with ASTM.

6.2 Bulk Density

The bulk density of a soil, i.e. the mass per unit volume of the soil deposit including

any water it contains was determined at the laboratory by using the linear

measurement method.

Peshawar. Email: gsk.engineerz@gmail.com, 0333-912-6118, 091-584-1515
Report No. 9650/GSK

6.3 Particle Size Distribution

Particle size distribution was determined by

means of sieving. Sieves of standard sizes were

used as per ASTM E11-09e1. The percentage of

weight of the various particle sizes were

determined by sieving through a set of these

standard sieves. This test was performed to

determine the percentage of different grain sizes

contained within a soil sample. This test was performed as per ASTM D422, D1140.

Graphs obtained are attached in the appendices.

6.4 Direct Shear Test

Where three identical specimens were sheared under

three vertical load conditions and the maximum shear

stress in each case was measured. The strength

parameters, namely cohesion (c) and angle of internal

friction (Ø) were determined from the maximum shear-vs-

normal stress plot.
