DESIGN
GUIDELINES
A well-designed school building improves student
performance and creates a lasting impression on
the community about the value of education. It
accomplishes this by taking into account
ergonomics, anthropometries, thermal comfort,
illumination, ventilation, acoustics, color, and
compliance with regulations.

CLASSROOMS
Both primary and secondary schools require
their classrooms to be 7.0 meters wide by
9.00 meters long, or 9.00 meters wide by
7.00 meters long, measured from the
centers of the walls.

The floor needs to have a grayish-colored non-skid

coating.
There should be a 0.25 meter difference between the
FFLs in the classroom and the passageway.
For single-story and multi-story school buildings,
the first floor finish elevation must be at least
0.225 meters and 0.325 meters, respectively.
Depending on past flood levels, the elevation can be
raised.
In accordance with the Accessibility Law (B.P. No.
344), a ramp needs to have a maximum slope of 1:12, a
non-skid finish, and the appropriate labeling.
CLASSROOMS
Bilateral fenestration (transparent or
translucent), moveable louver windows are
required. Even in closed position, the window
needs to let light in.
To provide for natural ventilation and lighting,
the total area of window openings must be at
least 10.00 square meters.

Every classroom must have two (2) doors.

It should be a 180-degree swing-out.
The doors feature a minimum of a clear width of
0.90 meters and a clear height of 2.10 meters.
The doors must have keyed lever-type locksets
and be able to endure typical wear and tear.
HALLWAYS
For one-story school buildings, the corridor
must be at least 1.50 meters wide.
Steel railings at a minimum height of 1.50
meters shall be installed in the corridors
of multi-story school buildings, with a
minimum length of 2.50 meters.

Concrete stairs in multi-story school buildings

must be at least 1.50 meters wide.
The number of stairways in each school building
must adhere to the guidelines set out by the
Philippine National Building Code (NBCP).
There must be handrails with steel railings.
CLASS
A room's shape is equally as significant as its size. A simple
rectangular design promotes clear sight lines, monitoring, and
layout flexibility. Planning is more difficult in rooms that

LABORATORY
are too long and tight; viewing angles or distances may be too
wide. It is imperative to permit acceptable minimum working
distances between furniture and equipment in laboratories to
guarantee the safe mobility of students, staff, and individuals
using wheelchairs, especially during practical sessions.

FURNITURE
STORAGE
LIBRARY
The total length of the circulation desk should be roughly
4.9m, with restricted access, and complete visual control,
complete with power, data, and phone outlets.
The location of the book return must be mobile.
Prefer wall space for shelving that is 60" tall and space for
movable shelving units.
Work study space for classes, for reading exercises in big
groups, and for
citation.
Provide workstations or computers for searching books
CAFETERIA
Cafeterias serve as a food serving area as well as a multi-
purpose area for school activities.
Centrally located.
Sized to seat 15 sf/student with no more than 3 lunch periods.
Provide ample storage for additional special events folding
tables and chairs. Provide windows to the outside with window
coverings.
ADMIN OFFICE
The administration area will be central to the school and visitor
access. It is the school’s access control point, so visibility
and easy way finding are important to and from these offices.
Minimize curved walls and odd angled walls in this area to best
accommodate high density of furniture.
There must be room in the reception area for tables where people
can register computer data loss
Enough room for file cabinets (enough for the number of
students)cabinets that are lockable and fireproof.
