1.0 INTRODUCTION

The objective is to develop an action plan designed to motivate an individual or

group towards an objective and to guide them towards it. Objectives are more

intentional than desires and momentary intentions. Setting goals therefore means

that a person has made an effort to achieve the goal. In doing that, the objective

setter has developed a wanted future state that is different from its current state and

therefore creates a discrepancy that in turn stimulates future action. The setting of

goals can be guided by goals (or rules) like SMART. The setting of objectives is a

key element in the literature on personal development and management.

The studies of Edwin A. Locke and his fellow Members, particularly Gary

Latham, have shown that more specific and ambitious targets improve performance

than simple or general objectives. Specific goals should be timely and complicated.

The 90th percentile of performance should ideally set difficult goals if motivation and

capacity are to limit that level of performance. As long as the individual accepts, is

able to achieve and has no contradictory objectives, the linear connection is positive

between the problem of the goal and the task.

In this assignment, there are 2 ways that we can use to set our goals. The first

one is S.M.A.R.T Goals. Secondly, the Zig Ziglar’s Seven Steps of Goal Setting.

2.0 MY S.M.A.R.T GOALS

The framework for SMART targets helps to define and plan achievable results. The

achieved within the resources available. The acronym is commonly interpreted as

S(pecific), M(easureable), A(ttainable), R(ealistic) and T(imely).

Sabah with Vice Chancellor’s Award.

3.0 ZIG ZIGLAR'S SEVEN STEPS OF GOAL SETTING

A seven-step list of objectives (or goal achievement) was drawn by Zig Ziglar, a US

motivational speaker. They are: identification, advantages, obstacles, abilities,

individuals, schedules and timescales.

3.1 Identify the Goal

My goal is to graduate my degree which is Degree in Marketing with Vice

Chancellor’s Award on time. To achieve it, I need to maintain my pointer at 3.50 and

above every semester of my degree. I must score at least 50% on my assessment

and 30% on my final test.

3.2 The Benefits

The advantages that I can get from graduating with Vice Chancellor’s Award is I can

get scholarships from local & abroad universities. It will help me to continue a higher

education without being burden to my parents. Also, I have specialty among all

candidates when I attend in a job interview in companies because as you know,

getting an award is not easy. It takes all hardships to achieve it. So, I will have high

opportunities to get accepted by companies.

3.3 Obstacle to Overcome

There is no easy way to achieve goals. We have to overcome obstacles to reach it.

For me, my bad habits are procrastinating and I’m a forgetful person. I always do my

assignments in last minute and taking it easy when I answers quizzes and tests.

Also, I am too careless because I constantly miss important dates. To overcome it, I

need to have my daily schedule so it can help me to organize my time. Next, I need

to cover all chapters in all subjects in advance to face quizzes and tests. Lastly,

never do tasks in last minute.

3.4 Skills and Knowledge Required

I want to improve my communication skills in order to achieve my goals. Whilst

maintaining good eye contacts, I need to talk with a wide range of people

appropriately, demonstrate a varied language and tailor it to the audience, listen

effectively, present my ideas appropriately, write clearly and concisely, and work in

one group. Moreover, it can help me to become a better person not just academically

but personally. Next is time management. Good time management leads to

increased efficiency and productivity, less stress, and higher life success. It will

assist me in creating and adhering to a task schedule in order to reduce my anxiety.

As I cross items off my "to-do" list, I can see that I am making real progress. This

keeps me from getting stressed out about whether or not I'm getting things done.

3.5 People or Groups to Work With

There were a lot of people involved in helping me achieving my goals. Firstly, my

parents. They supported me financially when I was in college and even through

online distance learning. They also motivated me to continue my study at higher

level and not to give up on learning. Next is my lecturers. They keep trying on

helping me to understand and did their best teaching me so I can pass their subjects.

Last but not least is my friends. They are the one who get to really know my inner

feelings. They also remind me of important things and always listen to my problems

when I’m feeling down.

3.6 Create an Action Plan

My plan is to complete all of my assignments and tasks as soon as possible. I will

avoid procrastination in order to keep me focus on every task I do. Also, I will take

notes and cover all chapters in all subjects in advance. Moreover, I am aiming for at

least 3.50 pointer each semester and try to improve it every semester. Also, I will try

to score at least A- for every subject to maintain my pointer.

3.7 Set the Deadline for Achievement

To achieve my goals, I must complete all six semesters or three years of study from

today.

4.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, setting goals helps people get from where they are to where they want

to go. Some objectives are more difficult to achieve than others. Goal setting is used

in many aspects of life. People set goals for a variety of reasons, including improved

job performance, personal growth, a career change, and the acquisition of a new

hobby.

We can see a clearer path to achieving our objectives by using SMART goals

and Zig Ziglar Goal Setting. SMART goals help people succeed by making our

objectives more specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound. The

SMART method encourages you to go further, provides direction, and assists you in

organizing and achieving your goals. Zig Ziglar's Seven Steps to Goal Setting are

practical and helpful. Many “solution-focused” coaches, in fact, guide their clients

through a similar process. They appear simple on paper, but they are not always so

simple to accomplish on our own in real life.

Incorporating goal-setting and SMART goals into your personal and

professional life will result in significant improvements. SMART goals enable us to

create smaller, more realistic tasks that we are confident can be completed, making

them all the more satisfying.
