FILM SHOOT
As a film and photographic location, Cape Town is ranked on the top of the list of international destinations. It has the charm of old streets and side lanes, contemporary buildings and premium properties on its coastline. The winelands, mountains and beaches are of the worlds most beautiful and the pool of talent in the South African film industry is equipped with the technical skills and competence to create anything from commercials to big budget feature films. Filmmakers from Northern Europe and America also have the advantage of converting their dollars and euros into South African currency so that their budgets can accommodate more value in rand terms. The recognition of the potential revenue from the industry has led to investment in infrastructure such as the Sasani Studio at Cape Towns V&A Waterfront, the upgrade of Longkloof Studios and the establishment of German equipmentrental company, CineLicht. The construction of the Cape Town Film Studios a total of R430-million was invested and this represents the largest commitment to the South African film industry. Located in Faure, on the outskirts of Cape Town, the project aims to ensure the existence of a permanent film infrastructure in the province. Since its inception, the CTICC has hosted prestigious music and arts festivals, concerts and productions such as the International Jazz Festival, the Musical Fame, and the Design Indaba. CTICC SUSTAINABLE COMMITMENT

40

41

NuRTuRE OuR WORLD (NOW) CTICC and its staff have created an initiative called NOW which translates into Nurture our World. This calls people who encounter the CTICC on all levels powerfully into action. It encourages consumers to unite in an effort to be environmentally aware. It also refers to the literal growth of nature. The NOW initiative epitomises CTICCs commitment to sustainability of the organisation. In addition to formalising the organisations environmental commitment, the NOW initiative has expanded to include supplier accreditation. The CTICC is the first convention centre in Africa to become a signatory to the uN Global Compact, a strategic policy initiative for business that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with universally accepted principals in the areas of human rights, labour, environments and anti-corruption. CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT As a convention centre with a clear commitment to contributing towards the sustainable economic development of the Western Cape and South Africa as a whole, the CTICC is determined to do whatever it can to uplift the communities in which it operates. To achieve this, the centre has a dedicated Corporate Social Investment Programme that focuses on supporting selected charities through the contribution of produce, equipment and other resources. To ensure that our staff members enjoy the benefit of being able to contribute to those less fortunate than themselves, the decision regarding which charities we support was made in consultation with all permanent employees. In addition to the contributions via the CTICCs formal CSI programme, staff members at the centre are encouraged (but not required) to get involved in supporting these and other charities or projects in their personal capacities. . An important aspect of our ongoing social responsibility outcomes is our training and skills development of people from outlying township areas. By equipping local communities with employable skills in the kitchen, for example, we are contributing to job creation and economic growth in a region we are passionate about.

CTICC SUSTAINABLE

GREEN MAKEOVER As part of the CTICCs commitment to environmental sustainability, the CTICC has a fully sustainable office environment that was not only cost effective to produce but environmentally responsible. Much of the office furniture used in the new open plan work space was constructed from recycled furniture. The result is a fresh look that is in keeping with the CTICC corporate identity, and encourages collaboration, creativity and team work. GREEN POLICIES Much time and effort has been invested into planning around how CTICC can implement best practice green initiatives into every area of the business. As a result, the following schemes have been implemented across the organisation: REuSABLE PRODuCTS CTICC favours reusable and recyclable products. As such, no Styrofoam cups are used and maximum utilisation of reusable items is encouraged, such as table linen and cutlery. Biodegradable soaps and detergents are used in dispensers rather than sachets.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY All escalators in the centre are fitted with sensors that ensure they only work when stepped on. Motion sensors ensure that lights are switched off when meeting rooms are vacant and timers in the parking garage modulate lighting levels for energy efficiency. WASTE MINIMISATION CTICC is currently enhancing its recycling programme so that waste can be sorted at source prior to collection. This will serve to divert waste from landfills and ensure the processing or treatment of recyclable waste in an environmentally sustainable manner. EVENT GREENING CTICCs environmental commitment extends beyond its own practices and the centre assists its clients to reduce their carbon footprint by means of green event package options designed to be both memorable and environmentally sound. MY TREE IN AFRICA My tree in Africa allows conference delegates to offset the environmental impact of their flights by purchasing trees that are planted in disadvantaged communities. .

ARTWORK
Art has always played a pivotal role at the CTICC, and it has proudly served as a showcase of talent that celebrates individual expression and talent whilst reflecting the diversity of artwork on the continent and region. BAOBABS, STORMCLOuDS, ANIMALS AND PEOPLE The main entrance foyer of the CTICC immediately evokes the spirit of Africa and the Cape through its chosen pieces. It serves as a symbol of interaction and collaboration between the late San artist /Tuoi Stefaans Samcuia and award-winning artist Brett Murray. Entitled Baobabs, Stormclouds, Animals and People the striking 28 x 8 metre relief sculpture is inspired by /Tuoi Stefaans dreams and childhood memories of hunting gemsbok and walking in nature. RESERVOIR Local artist, Gavin Younge, produced the Reservoir collection of artwork, with woven wire and metal storage vessels suspended from the roof on the Heerengracht side of the centre and against the backdrop of Table Mountain. WOVEN BOAT HuLLS The second piece is woven boat hulls, encapsulating the seafaring traditions that have influenced the evolution of the Cape. SOuTH AFRICA ACROSS CuLTuRAL SPECTRuM Drawing inspiration from the 2010 World Cup, Design Indaba launched a campaign in December 2009 that called on South Africans across the cultural spectrum to express themselves through translating photographic profiles of themselves into a medium of their choice. This permanent exhibition has been installed in an area dedicated to showcasing the creative flair of the 11-member team.
