Site Requirements Manual
1. Safety Requirements

In order to prevent occurrence of accident to personnel entering the magnetic field, and also to avoid
interference to the MRI system, restricted areas must be established.

Frequent Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question
Buyer is considering installing the system on the 3rd floor of their building. The super structure of
the building is steel I-beam. How close can these I-beams be to the scanner before they become a
problem with shimming?
Most pre-existing concrete here, that would be used on the ground floor of a building, will be 6” thick
with steel mesh (small diameter steel, 1/4” diameter or less spaced approximately 4” apart) or they
will use rebar 3/8” thick tied together in a grid, suspended in the middle of the concrete. Will any of
these cause a problem with shimming the magnet?

Answer
As can be seen from Fig 1, the 5G line (in the vertical direction) from the iso-center of the magnet is
approximately 1.2m maxima in radius and as shown in Fig 2, the distance between the iso-center of
the magnet to the flooring is approximately 1.112m.

Fig 1. 10G, 5G, 3G & 1G lines distribution from the iso-center of the magnet. 0.2m per square.

Iso-center of
the magnet

Distance of the iso-

center of the magnet to
floor 1.112m.

Fig 2. Distance of iso-center of the magnet to floor 1.1m

When the system is installed in the RF room, the flooring of the RF shield room should be elevated
around 7cm upwards from the room flooring. Furthermore if the room flooring is 6” thick (~15cm)
and the steel mesh is in the mid of the concrete pouring that means from the room floor surface to the
steel mesh should be around 7.5cm.
If we calculate it out, iso-center of the magnet to the steel mesh should be 111.2cm + 7cm + 7.5cm =
125.7cm or 1.257m, which is outside the 5G line. Hence, we don't think the steel mesh will cause any
problem with the shimming of the magnet.
For the I-beam we assume the distance between the I-beam to the room flooring should be even
bigger. Therefore, we also don't think the I-beam will not cause a problem with the shimming of the
magnet as well.
However, if we want to be doubly sure about it, we can lay a 2x2m, 0.3mm thick silicon steel at the
base of the where the system is installed.
