Foreword
The drilling fluid agitator is one of main supporting devices for solids control system of
drilling rig, and is used for agitating the drilling fluid to keep its solid liquid in uniformly mixed
state and meet the process requirements on solids phase control and circulation of drilling fluid.
This manual describes the structure, working principle, use recommendation, technical
maintenance, major data and technical parameters of drilling fluid agitator. To ensure efficient
and safe drilling and reliable equipment running, please operate it as per this manual.
The personnel in charge of the installation, operation and maintenance of the drilling fluid
agitator for drilling rig must read this manual and the user manuals or the operation manuals of
its accessories carefully before installing and using the solids control system, and install, use
and maintain the solids control system as per the requirements in these manuals. If related
contents are not known, improper installation, operation or maintenance may cause personal
injury or equipment damage.

Important safety statements

The personnel engaged in the use, management, operation, maintenance and repair of
product shall know related contents in this user manual well, follow the normative procedure
about use, management, operation, maintenance and repair, and especially pay attention to
safety warnings and notices mentioned in this user manual, national laws and regulation,
industrial regulations and general knowledge for avoiding human injury and equipment
damage.
This manual may not be able to list all safety warnings information in detail. Therefore,
when choosing any one method to operate the system, first confirm necessarily that this method
neither endangers personal safety nor damages equipment.
To maintain the system correctly is an important way to keep it in reliable and safe
running. The personnel engaged in maintenance shall maintain it as per the methods introduced
in this manual.
Be sure to repair the product properly and replace parts with the parts made by their
manufacturer for the safe and reliable running of the equipment. The users must repair and
replace parts as per the manufacturer-authorized right.

1. Safety warnings

 Only trained and qualified operators can install, operate and repair equipment with
qualification certificates.
 Operators must read related user manuals before operation, and can operate or
maintain equipment after the familiarity with its functions and operation.
 There shall be a chief principal designated for installation and maintenance, the
persons participating in work shall be assigned with clear work, and detailed and
reliable safety measures shall be available.
 In the use process, strictly execute its operation specifications and follow technical
safety rules.
 It is forbidden to run equipment in the dark unless there are proper lighting facilities.
 Persons on duty shall wear labor protection articles as required.
 When hoisting and handling equipment is used, ensure the crane has enough lifting
capacity to safely bear equipment weight.
 Cut off power supply of corresponding equipment necessarily when the electric
equipment is repaired.
 It is forbidden to maintain and repair equipment when equipment runs.
 When equipment runs, it is forbidden to wear gloves etc when observation cover of
rotating component (such as coupling) needs opened.
 Do not overload equipment.
 Don't point high-pressure air at human body, as it may cause personal injury. It is
forbidden to rotate ball bearing or roller bearing with high-pressure air. Do not point
high-pressure air at fire.
 If the power is used improperly, equipment may be damaged. Necessarily ensure that
the supply voltage and frequency of equipment are normal.

3. Purposes and functions

The drilling fluid agitator is equipment for agitating drilling fluid in circulating tank in
drilling fluid solids control system. Each part of mixed liquid keeps to approach homogeneous
mixture state by the agitation effect of the impeller, such as liquid-liquid mixing, solid-liquid
suspension, gas-liquid or liquid-liquid dispersion etc.

4. Working principle and structure of agitator

4.1. Structure of agitator

The drilling fluid agitator comprises EXP motor, reduction gearbox, coupling, base,
agitating shaft and impeller etc. The surface treatment adopts shot blasting process, and uses
paints for marine ships with favorable antiseptic property. (Fig. 1: structural drawing)

4.2. Working principle of agitator

The drilling fluid agitator is installed on the circulating tank for the drilling fluid solids
control system, and agitates the liquid-liquid and liquid-solid materials in circulating tank
evenly by means of the mechanical agitation action by the rotation of the impeller. Solid
suspends in the drilling fluid to be treated by other solids control equipment, and particulate
matter does not deposit in tank.
The drilling fluid agitator is driven by helical gear-bevel gear reduction gearbox, and the
drive by the reduction gearbox can bear the impact load from impeller. The blade of the
impeller and the motion direction are oblique at a certain angle to generate radial and axial
liquid flows during agitation (referring to following Fig. 2).

5. Installation, commissioning and maintenance of agitator

5.1. Installation of agitator

When equipment is lifted, hang lifting hooks at set lifting points to keep balance and
directivity of equipment and prevent components from damage. Do not hang the lifting
hooks on motor or non-set points.
Make sure lifting capacity of crane is big enough to bear equipment weight safely.
The supporting beam of agitator shall have enough strength, and fitting surface shall
horizontal.
5.1.1. Coupling
The longer service life of the agitator depends on the alignment of the elastic coupling, use
straight steel ruler to approach the upper part, lower part, left and right of the coupling during
installation and inspection (Fig. 3), observe the straight ruler and each side of the outer circle of
the coupling by naked eyes, which shall contact tightly without light transmission, check radial
offset by dial gage (Fig. 4), namely, each side of the outer circle of the coupling shall be on one
straight line, ensure the radial offset to be less than 0.15mm, the measurement location of the
radial offset is at 1/2 of the width of the max. outer circle of the half-coupling, and the axial
offset is within ± 1mm.

5.1.2. Agitating shaft
The agitating shaft is installed on the output flange of reduction gearbox, and shall be kept
vertically, firmly and reliably to avoid vibration, ensure that radial runout of the sealing location
of the agitating shaft is not more than 0.13mm, the axial float is not more than 0.3mm and the
coaxality error of the agitating shaft relative to the centralizer is not more than 3mm.

5.2. Commissioning of agitator

5.2.1. Preparation before running


A. Rotate impeller shaft with hands to ensure flexible running and no grating everywhere.
B. Jog, and check rotation direction which must be consistent with that required by mark.
5.2.2. Running operation
A. After preparation work is all completed, start motor.
B. After the agitator normally works for 2h, check bearing and oil sump for temperature
rise, the temperature rise of the bearing is not more than 45℃, and the temperature rise of the
oil sump is not more than 35℃.
C. Noise detection: detect at the position of 1.5m, the noise shall be less than 85dB.
D. In the running process, each part shall run stably without abnormal vibration and noise,
and in case of violent vibration, abnormal sound or other abnormal phenomena, cut off power

immediately to prevent accidents, find out reasons, and perform troubleshooting.


E. The vibration acceptance standard is that it is qualified if the vibration velocity is below
1.2mm/s when the agitator runs.
F. In the running process of the agitator, the impeller stresses complicatedly in the mud,
and it is normal in case of the collision between the agitating rod and centralizer.
5.2.3. Stop
A. Cut off power to motor for stop.
B. Check fasteners and connectors of each part, which shall not be loose.
C. Seals and joints cannot have leakage.

5.3. Maintenance

5.3.1. Operators must be trained in solids control technology and implement the operation
regulation strictly.
5.3.2. Check motor for overheat, abnormal sound and oil leakage during use, and treat in time
in case of above conditions.
5.3.3. During the use of agitator, observe oil level in oil sump at any time, which shall be in
specified range to guarantee normal lubrication.
5.3.4. The installation, repair and maintenance of reduction gearbox refer to corresponding
operation manual carefully.
User needs to maintain the reducer periodically, check the use state of lubricating oil
periodically, clean vent cap, fan and condenser pipe and dust and foreign matters on surface of
reduction gearbox periodically, keep reduction gearbox clean, and guarantee the normal running
of reduction gearbox.

5.4. Troubles, reasons and measures

The repair work must be performed prudently by trained and qualified persons.

6. Storage of equipment

Motor is easy to damage if equipment is stored in an environment with higher


humidity (relative humidity exceeds 90%). If the motor is not used temporarily, it shall be
stored in a low-humidity environment.
If equipment is not installed right now when user gets it, the equipment should be stored in
a dry environment (relative humidity is lower than 50%). A dry storage environment can ensure
the performance of equipment at the reception.
If the equipment is stored outdoors, wrap it by tarp resistant to ultraviolet ray and radiation
or retractable thin film resistant to ultraviolet ray and radiation. If it is wrapped by retractable
thin film resistant to ultraviolet ray and radiation, a ventilation opening shall be made. Operation
and maintenance manual shall be packed in package of equipment.
