Preface

JJ450/45.5-K mast is designed and manufactured by Shandong Kerui


Machinery Manufacture Co., Ltd. which based on customer’s requirement,
according to Petroleum Drilling Rig Type and Basic Parameter standard
and API related specification, this mast can meet requirements of 7000m
depth oil and gas drilling.

In order to make personnel in charge of operation, maintenance and


management know this mast well, and have guides to follow when using
the maintaining equipment, we draw up this manual. This manual provide
specific requirement for mast usage and maintenance, correct usage and
good maintenance, can not only ensure the equipment work well in long
term, enhance production efficiency, reduce shut down loss, but also
extend equipment service life to a largest extent.

This manual aims at giving a guide to equipment operation and


maintenance in site. If some mistakes or not appropriate subjects is found
when read this manual, please propose your valuable suggestion, so that
we can replenish and revise it in reprint, make our products give you better
service

1. Safety Criterion

In order to avoid and prevent personal injury or death, environmental pollution,


equipment damage and property loss that may happen in the process of drill rig
installation, debugging, production, maintenance and repair, this criterion was drew
up on the base of industry standard specification.

1.1 Requirement of Rigger Qualification

Firstly, rigger must have good health, have no disease which can obstruct his work.
Secondly, rigger must go through related training, have related certification, have
technical expertise, work experience and safety knowledge for his position.

1.2 Requirement of Rigger Safety protection

In order to relieve accident injury and occupational hazard, operation environment


should reach safe operation requirement, labor protection appliance must be equipped
in the working place, operator should choose relevant safety appliance according to
work property and defending purpose, and dress it correctly.
Safety rule of drilling company and labor protection regulation of operation country
must have specific requirement and standard for rigger’s operation, and allotment of
rigger’s labor protection appliance should be executed according to SY/T6524-2002
Equip Requirement of Petroleum Industry Working Place Labor Protection
Appliance.

1.3 Safety Requirement of Mast Operation and Maintenance


Equipment

1) Hose insurance rope use wire line with diameter no less than 12.25mm( 1/2 in),
fasten it;
2) Lifting ring insurance rope use wire line with diameter from 9.5 to 12.25 mm (3/8
in~1/2 in), fasten it;
3) Install tongs insurance rope and tail sheath correctly;
4) Install each ladder and handrail completely, fixed tightly;
5) All the laid slot frame of cable windpipe are complete, their length are

appropriate and excellent without damage.

1.4 Other Safety Concerns

1.4.1Work high above the ground

Something must be concerned whilst working aloft:


1) Operation personnel should wear soft soles, fasten safety belt, and safety belt
need to take tensile test regularly;
2) All the tools must be tied by tail ropes and be fastened tightly, tools cannot be left
on the mast after work finished;
3) Prohibit using electrical or pneumatic winch to bring people up and down the
mast
4) Personnel in other position on the mast, must meet the requirement of working
aloft, and get permission from driller on duty;
5) Before starting work on monkey board, finger board, operation board and
fastening of various ropes must be checked before operation. Any problem must
be solved in time, safety belt must be fastened on monkey board, and cannot be
attached to operation board;
6) When equipments face six level or above wind, thunder, torrential rain, fog, snow,
sandstorm and visibility less than 30m, hoisting, dismounting and working aloft
must be stopped.

1.4.2 Correct Frequently-used Hand Tooling Usage

Tools must be checked carefully before and after use, and must be wiped up before
using and storage, tools can’t be put casually, especially cannot be put on high; tools
location mode should protect them out of damage, when some tools with cutting edge
be put into tool case, their cutting edge must have cover, and rust prevention should
be taken.
Be better and safer to use hand tools, some suggestions as following:

1) Teach workman to choose right tool for each operation. Help and guide them to
execute training and analysis to use tool safely, develop their safety habits of
choosing and using tools correctly;
2) Build regular tool check standard and demand. The tool belonged to workman

also need check, favorable tool maintain facility must be provided to well site,
keep tools in good condition all along;
3) Build company tool management rule, such as toolroom check system;
4) Provide appropriate store facility for all kinds of tools.

1.4.3 Prevent Falling Objects Accident

Eliminate falling objects accident which hurt people must build a comprehensive and
reasonable check and maintain path, and must execute it strictly and seriously.

1) Check all the parts of mast and equipment, especially all kinds of ropes, bolts and
nuts, check them carefully, this do help to keep them fastened tightly or prevent
them in danger state, and to find any problem that need fix;
2) Pay special attention to hand tools management, workman can not bring tools
when climbing ladder, two hands should be put on ladder handrail, which ensure
safety of himself and workmates going down;
3) Anyone anytime need hand tools in the height above drill floor, must use a stout
tightrope to lift the hand tools; after finished, put down these hand tools with the
same tightrope. We can also use toolkit to carry hand tools up, but prevent tool or
toolkit falling down.
4) Many falling objects accidents are caused by hand tools put everywhere on
monkey board. When using hand tools in the height above drill floor, people must
use stout tightrope fasten hand tools, and make tightrope opposite end fastened on
the mast, especially pay attention to hook used to pull drilling pipe and signal bar
on the monkey board.

1.4.4 Safety Habits

Good safety habits is the most effective way to prevent accident happen, good safety
habits must be vigilant to danger and prevent accident, in short, must have enough
safety awareness, and implement it in work.
Good safety habits have important effect to use mast correctly, extend mast service
life and guarantee operator’s safety and health, so in daily work drilling company
should do following trainings and requests to personnel:

1) Hold study classes at regular intervals, do HSE publicity, education and training
to personnel, continuously improve their health quality, safety protection skill and
environment sanitary condition;
2) Build and perfect all kinds of safety management system, let HSE protection
management work run through overall process of mast installation, usage,
operation, maintenance;
3) Create safe and healthy work environment, improve working quality of
personnel;
4) Prevent or reduce environmental pollution, lowering damage to environment in
drilling operation to lowest extent;
5) When operating in the height of 2m or above, people must wear safety belt or
take safety measures;
6) Strictly prohibit carrying all inflammable, explosive, toxic and radioactive
substance to drill floor;
7) Strictly prohibit drinking in mount guard or before mount guard, strictly prohibit
smoking in working time.

2. Mast expatiate and Operation Specification

2.1 Summary

2.1.1 Application

JJ450/45.5-K mast, consist of the drilling rig with crown block, substructure,
drawworks and other components. The main purposes are installing and placing
crown block, suspending traveling system, lifting and lowering drilling tools, and
withstanding the load occurred whilst tripping in/out the drilling pipe, putting down
casing and dealing with down hole accidents. It is an important part of the drilling rig.

2.1.3 Design Standards

All basic parameters meet SY/T5609-1999 Petroleum drilling rig model and basic
parameters.
Load Design is in accordance with API Spec 4F (2008 Edition 3) Drilling rig &
workover rig mast ,substructure specification.
Design is accordance with ANSI/AWS D1.1-2006 American steel structure welding
specification.

Design is in accordance with SY /T5170-1998 Wire line in petroleum industry.


Design is in accordance with AISC-360-05 Construction steel structure specification.

2.2 Description of Mast structure and Related Parts

This mast was designed as front opening type with no anchor rope, its main structure
include: mast body, steel frame, sway rod assembly, “A” Frame assembly, monkey
board, ladder, casing stabbing basket, tubing stabbing basket, rope clamp,hoisting
device, mast accessories, etc.

2.2.1 Mast main body

Mast main body includes five parts, between partⅠ and part Ⅱ use bolt connection,
partⅡ,Ⅲ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ use pin and ear plate connection. Each section is divided into left and
right rack, the back of left and right rack of part Ⅱuse backplane steel frame
connection, the back of left and right rack of partⅢ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ use steel frame and
diagonal draw bar connection, thus make five parts into a system, consist of front
opening ‘П’ type structure of main body of mast.
The length of part two is 8.981m, have placed 2 lifting oriented pulleys. The length of
partⅠ,Ⅲ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ are 8.981m, 12.027m, 11.514m and 12.037m.
Mast use the way of adding hydro-cylinder gasket for centering, In order to achieve
the drilling requirements to align the center of the crown block right above the
wellbore center.

2.2.2 Monkey Board

Monkey board design capacity is 5 1/2"DP, 28m, 208 tribble, about 5824m. Designed
capacity satisfy users’ requirement, have three installation height: 26.5m, 25.5m,
24.5m.
Operating floor is rolling-over structure, be used for turn a angle when mast rise and
lower, thus can make traveling system pass through monkey board. Monkey board
have four drill pipe racks, be used for placing various tribble below 5 1/2". In addition,
one side of monkey board have ten freestanding drill collar rack, each of them have
safety chain, 6 racks far away from well center can place 8" drill collar, 4 racks near
well center can place 10" drill collar. There is a block rod under the drill collar rack,
pull it out when drilling line dragging among crown block and traveling block, to
prevent the wire line doing damage to the drilling pipe rack and other spare parts, and
get it back after finishing the job.
Monkey board equipped 0.5t pneumatic winch and pull device, to relieve labor
intensity, and is good for drill tool discharge; monkey board also equipped emergency
escape device, make work safer and more efficient.

2.2.3 “A” Frame

“A” frame front and back landing legs fixed on left and right lower base of the
substructure, left and right slice of “A” frame connected by one main beam, constitute
a stable triangle over-all structure.
“A” frame main beam have a fast line guide sheaves, four rise sheaves, when rising
mast fast line guide sheaves can traverse in the length scope of hoisting barrel, it is
good for drawwork to discharge line and have bearing and guiding effect to fast line,
while rise sheaves bear maximum load when rising mast and substructure. There is an
operation floor on the left and right side of “A” frame respectively, they are used for
operation of lifting and lowering mast.
Mast and “A” frame connects by “U” shape bolt, mast leg support fixes on “A”
frame front support.

2.2.4 Hoisting Device
Mast hoisting device is used for hoisting and lowering mast, mainly includes
hoisting line, high bracket, low bracket, balance tripod, etc. This mast was designed to
be installed horizontally on low place. Put the catwalk in appropriate position, used
for placing traveling system, one end of hoisting line connects on substructure, the
other end connects to traveling block through “A” frame lifting sheave and guide
sheave in partⅡ, use motive power of drawwork to hoist and lower mast.

Warning:High bracket should be installed on part V near


crown block, this position have obvious mark, strictly
prohibit installing high bracket on any other places!

Includes: hoisting line, small bracket, high bracket, hoisting line hanger, etc.

2.2.5 Hydraulic Damping Device

This mast equips a set of hydraulic damping device, installed on ‘A’ frame, when mast
be hoisted to an angle of 85°comparing with ground, buffer action from damping
hydraulic cylinder can prevent sharp collision happened between mast and ‘A’ frame
and help centering effectively, at the same time it can provide initial pushing force
when mast lowering.

2.2.6 Ladder assembly and climbing assistance device

Left and right side of mast both equips ladders and climbing assistance devices, ladder
is divided into four parts with protection cage; people can climb to the monkey board
and the crown block by both side ladders. Mast installed climbing assistance device,
this device can prevent operator falling down which causes personal injury, guarantee
operator’s safety, and be in accordance with requirements of HSE specification

2.2.7 Tong counterweight device

Part III of mast main body equipped tong counterweight devices in both sides, they
are used as counter weight of ‘B’ shape tong at well head and pneumatic spinner, to be
convenient for operating well head tool.

2.2.8 Emergency escape device


Mast equipped emergency escape device, it is convenient for rigger escaping from
dangerous area on monkey board quickly and safely in emergency, guarantee
operator’s life safety to largest extent, and for more detailed information please read
emergency escape device service manual.

2.2.9 Casing stabbing board

Casing stabbing board is used for operator centering casing when lowering casing, it
is designed for aiming at thread conveniently, shown as figure 9. Retractable lifting
table can go up and down in 6m along the guide tube; motive power comes from hand
chain block.

2.2.10 Tubing stabbing board

Tubing stabbing board is used for operator centering tubing when lowering tubing, it is
designed for screwing on/off conveniently, shown as figure 10.

2.3 Mast and its accessory installation

2.3.1 Preparation before installation

1) According to drill rig overall foundation drawing, check foundation unevenness, and ensure a
stable foundation, with enough bearing capacity and good drainage facility around well site;

2) Before installation, people should check specification and quantity of mast parts according to
shipping list, and settle each parts according to letter mark on mark plate, fill up missing parts,
repair collision deformation happened during transportation;
3) Letter characters on mast mark plate represent: A-main body B-steel frame C- diagonal
draw bar R-right L-left
4) Install substructure according to DZ450/10.5-X1 substructure operation manual in right size.

2.3.3 Installation steps and attention matters

Making all parts ready according to mark plate and shipping list, install mast in
following order:
1) After installing substructure, install ‘A’ frame left and right rack, connected ‘A’
frame main beam, use crane to install ‘A’ frame;

Figure 11 frame back leg support

2) After install mast left and right part of part Ⅰ, put intoφ150 leg pin, and then
install left and right part of partⅡ, install back steel frame;
3) Use crane, install left and right part of partⅢ, draw rod and steel frame of partⅢ,
left and right part of part Ⅳ, draw rod and steel frame of part Ⅳ, left and right part of
partⅤ, draw rod and steel frame of partⅤ in proper order, make it become left and
right leg, and use small frame to support it well;
4) Install dead line fixator, casing operation board and tong counter weight and other
mast accessory equipment;
5) Install crown block and its accessory;

Attention: after install left and right rack of each part,


put small rack support on rack end node of this part, and then
install diagonal draw bar and steel frame of this part

6) When above parts of mast installed completely, use crane lifting mast from crown
block lifting pad eye, put mast on high rack, and then support mast on its partⅤend
code;
7) Install monkey board and its accessory;
8) According hoisting device drawing to put travel block and balance frame on
catwalk, cross travel system rope series; and then according figure 13 to cross
hoist line, connected it on balance frame by pin, hang balance frame on travel
block;

Warning: Monkey board operation floor must be folded and


fixed stably, monkey board rope stop lever must be drawn
out fixed stably, when mast installing, rising and
lowering, monkey board can’t as mast support!

9) Install mast buffer hydraulic cylinder and various control valves; connect
hydraulic power; (see mast buffer device service manual)
10) According to hoisting device drawing check each part of mast installation
condition, if find deficiency, fix it in time.

2.4 Mast rising

2.4.1 Preparation Work Before Mast Rising

Check following items strictly before rising mast:


1) Mast each part assemble correctly, pin connected reliably, shear pin and pin
prepare completely, each connection bolt be in screw up condition;
2) Clear off any objects on mast haven’t relation with it, prevent fall objects hurt

personnel when rising;


3) Mast leg support connected stably, rotary pin hole must lubricate fully;
4) Hoist line must without obvious defect, without twist, break, burn, injection zinc
connection loose, lifting cross rope series must be right, resist rope device must
installed completely, each guide sheave turn normally, lubricate well;
5) Deadline end must fasten stably;
6) ‘A’ frame assembly each connection pin must be connected reliably, shear pin
and pin must all in readiness;
7) Monkey board operation floor fold up and fixed stably, monkey board rope stop
lever must pull out and fasten well;
8) Drawworks works smoothly, brake system flexible and reliable, driller must test
sensitivity of brake and air valve according to traditional procedure;
9) Check hydraulic buffer cylinder, ensure pipeline is unblocked, and notice
discharge all air in pipeline and cylinder;
10) All kinds of valve body located in right position, hydraulic source is normal,
hydraulic buffer cylinder should extend to maximum operating stroke position;
11) Driller’s house each instrument indication is accurate and reliable;
12) Air compressor in normal operation condition, air pressure in gasholder no under
0.8Mpa, and gas circuit unblocked;
13) Diesel engine power system in normal work condition

Attention:When rising mast, don’t hang the hook on traveling


system!

2.4.2 Mast Rising

1) Requirement of mast rising


a. Mast rising must by day, and temperature must higher than -20ºC, max. wind
speed not exceeding 16.5m/s(32knots);
b. In the process of mast rising, if indication pointer gauge exceed 180t or have
unusual sounds, mast rising must stop, after check and debug can continue the
operation;

c. Mast rising work must in single command by professional, operator must be


familiar with drill rig performance and operational method, whole course must
according operational specification to operate;
d. When mast rising and lowering, prohibit personnel stand in zone of influence,
to avoid accident happened.
2) Mast rising steps
Before mast raising make sure that each item’s check result is good, and each
mast rising environment and safe conditions meet requirement, and then can rise mast;
a. Use drawwork rising balance triquetrous rack in low speed, drive mast rise to
100~200m above high bracket, brake drawwork, stay for about 15 minutes, and check
following items:
 Hoist line end connection part is normal or not, drill wire rope and hoist line
whether cross sheave race correctly;
 Check pin and pad eye in main bear pressure parts, whether have out of
shape phenomenon;
 Pad eye welding line of main bear pressure parts whether have flaw;
 Wire line arrange on drawwork barrel tidily or not;
 Mast whether have unusual or out of shape;
 Weight indicator indication is normal or not;
In the case of all above are normal, put mast back to high frame, rise and lower 3
times;
b. Before mast rising reach out hydraulic suffer cylinder, when mast rise to 85°,
driller put mast on installation position, suffer device match drawwork, shrink
hydraulic cylinder slowly, until mast reach its position stably;
c. After mast reach its position, use “U” shape bolt connect mast and “A” frame,
and hang hoist line on hoist line hanger, hang up safety chain. From start to here, mast
rising process is finished.

Warning: Operator to hang hoist line must wear safety belt


in operation!

2.5 Mast adjustment

2.5.1 Mast adjustment

Use theodolite adjust frontage and side of mast, ensure crown block center excursion
to rotary table less than φ25mm, or travel block hook hang Kelly, make Kelly center
aim at rotary table center, excursion less than φ25mm.(mast must in vertical working
condition)

2.5.2 Mast adjustment in four direction

When assembling mast, a half thickness adjuster shim must be pre-placed in the
connection position between partⅠand partⅡ. When mast need seek right place, here
can slightly loosen M36 fixed bolt in the connection position between partⅠand
partⅡat first;(notice: cannot completely loosen nut, and cannot loosen the nut in two
side at the same time); then put tool cylinder into U shape groove in partⅠ, use
hydro-cylinder jack-up mast left or right leg, add or subtract shim according to need,
aim at well hole, screw up bolt when complete.

2.6 Mast Lowering and Dismounting

2.6.1 Preparation Before Mast Lowering

1) Dismount overhead tank, connection between high pressure stand pipe


horizontal pipe, mast inside and outside auxiliary board and walkway etc. related
equipment and component;
2) Fix monkey board operation floor, fix related rope and tools stably;
3) Check drawworks braking system and auxiliary brake can working or not;
4) Check mast rise wire line and guide sheave;
5) Connect hydraulic pipeline of buffer hydraulic cylinder, test run hydraulic
unit;
6) Put high frame and travel block parking frame to suitable place in the front of
mast;
7) Remove hook, hang rise triangular frame on travel block, bring up travel
block, pull and make mast rise rope and drill wire rope straight;

8) Check weight indicator flexibility and reliability.

2.6.2 Mast Lowering

Mast lowering operation procedure is opposite to rising mast operation procedure, that
is hang travel block hook and rising triangular frame at first, then put high frame to
correct position, according the check item before mast rising to execute check before
lowering.
After verify each checked items before lowering, their inspection result are good, and
lowering environment condition and safety condition satisfy requirement, then can
execute lowering operation:
1) Screw off U shape bolt which connect mast and ‘A’ frame;
2) Control hydraulic suffer device make suffer hydraulic cylinder push out slowly,
driller must accord hydraulic cylinder stretch speed to control drawwork brake
crank, ensure rise balance frame bearing strength appreciably, when mast main
body be push pass dead point, then can use suffer device, rely on mast self weight,
control drawwork brake crank lowering slowly, until mast main body be put on
high frame placidly;
3) Relax rise rope, screw off dead and live rope end, pull out the rope, then store
wire rope and take care it.

2.6.3 Mast Dismounting

According mast low level install opposite steps to operate, the component packing
after dismounting must according packing list and mast packing requirement to
execute, avoid store confusedly and mast parts rusting, broken and lost.

2.7 Mast Operation Standard and Procedure

2.7.1 Drilling Operation Attention Matters for Mast

1) During the process of mast installation and use, avoid the damage to the coating
paint on the mast surface, in order to avoid quick rust and corrosion, so as to
have effect on the mast’s service life;
2) During the operation process prevent traveling block, top drive, rings, elevator
and other moving parts colliding the operation station and other parts on the

monkey board;
3) Prevent the impact to the operation station and the block rod rack on the
monkey board when overturning, especially the rope should be hold whilst
turning over the operation station after lifting the mast, make it no impact on the
operation position;
4) When the mast is accidentally damaged in the process of transportation,
installation and use, the parts respond to the collision should be examined
(When the naked eye cannot distinguish or important part should be carried on
the nondestructive flaw detection, inspection, such as coloring detection
magnetic powder flaw detection, etc.) to ensure the components are not
damaged and no small cracks so that we can continue to use;
5) When carrying on the connecting, throwing drill rig operation in drilling or
other occasions, it is recommend to use the pneumatic winch mounted on the
drill floor, and pay particular attention to the pneumatic winch for wire rope
hanging on the parts of the monkey board;
6) Cutting and welding the structure, injury or increasing weight to the mast is
strictly prohibited, to prevent serious consequences when lifting the mast;
7) The ladder on the mast can be only used for derrick man for the operation and
maintenance of equipment on the mast, it is not allowed that two or more than
two persons ascend at the same time, when it is required that many persons
need to operate at the same time, another one people begin to ascend only after
one person getting on the monkey board or the water table,.

2.7.2 Operation in Low Ambient Temperature

Operation for mast used in winter must be based on API-4G low temperature
operation recommended method:
1) Within the possible extent, the operating of lifting and landing of the mast should
be carried out during the ‘warmest’ time in daytime, and the wind speed should
also be taken into consideration.
2) Take all kinds of feasible ways to heat some sections of the mast, for instance,
using high-pressure steam to heat the joints of the mast and the pedestal.
3) Tensioning and loosen the lifting big rope of the mast for several times to make
sure that all parts of the mast can move freely.

4) Preheat the driving engine and check all mechanical devices if they can work
normally, ensure that those failures which can cause the mast suddenly brake will
never happen. At the very beginning, the mast must be moved very slowly,
smoothly and steadily.
5) Under low temperature, the inspection and repair of the mast provided in chapter
6 and chapter 7 are very important.
6) When the temperature under 0℉(-17.7℃), welding operation must be forbidden.
When temperature of those parts combined is below 32 ° F (0 ° C), all steel grade
that commonly used in the oilfield structure construction are required to be
preheated. Even if the material temperature is above 32 ° F (0 ° C), certain steel
grades still need to be preheated, to control the interpass temperature and do the
post weld heat treatment. Prior to welding we should proofread with the structure
manufacturers.

3. Mast Maintenance Standard and Procedure

3.1 Requirement of Mast Maintenance Personnel’s Qualification

1) Mast maintenance personnel must be healthy without the disease which may
hinder the work.
2) Mast maintenance personnel must go through the professional training, and have
obtained the relevant qualification, have the required professional technical
knowledge, working experience and the necessary knowledge and awareness of
safety to engage in this job.
3) Mast maintenance personnel must go through the cognitive training of the mast
and be familiar with the main structure and the operation standard and procedure
of the mast before starting the job.

3.2 Mast Maintenance Detailed Rules

1) The mast should avoid sudden load during the drilling operation, preventing the
generation of excessive impact load, especially in larger loads; when lowering
technical casing, drilling to the maximum depth and processing down-hole

load will reduce the maximum hook load!

sticking of tool accident, should be slow to load and unload, try to avoid sudden
load and emergency brake, to ensure the safety of the mast. The operator in the
process of the operation should ensure the readings of the weight indicator within
the hook load range indicated by the curve, based on the hook load, wind speed
on the nameplate of the mast and the function curve of the monkey board tribble
quantity;
2) The operator (or the designated representative) should carry through the on-sit
appearance inspection for the using mast at regular intervals, and report the

results. Generally take inspection once each drilling month;


3) The mast in the use should be checked regularly to ensure the posts, oblique
transverse reinforcement is not deformed and damaged; hoisting rope has no rust
broken wire; the main parts of the force of the weld is not cracked; dowel pins are
complete; bolt nuts are not loosened; ladders, railings, walking boards are
complete and safe; the components and suspension parts connected to the mast
have no falling risk. If these problems exist, should be excluded and repaired.

4) During the inspection the damaged parts and components should be made clear,
obvious mark, in order to make the necessary repairs. It’s suggested to use bright,
obvious colors paint to mark. After the repair, these marks should be obliterated
using the same paint color as the original components. The components should
use the original color of then mast if the paintings fall off.
5) Without permission it is not allowed weld, punch on the mast, any damaged or
missing components during transportation and use the cannot substitute, shall
apply to the company for technical advice, to repair the damaged component and
try to negotiate with the company, to get the validation of the raw materials and
repair method of the mast. Without the consent of the company, its operating
personnel and repair construction technology should be approved by the
mechanical engineer, then can be carried out repair work;
6) During the use of the mast, once maintenance for one year, for normal
circumstances, above the lower section of the mast body should carry out at least
a rust anti-corrosion treatment for one year, the lower segment of the mast body
should carry out a rust anti-corrosion treatment every six months, the components
suffered from the erosion of drilling fluid, oil, natural gas in saturated brine,
hydrocarbon etc. and in serious corrosion should carry out a rust anti-corrosion
treatment after the completion of each well and before moving;

7) The mast at maximum load and lifting or lowering operation, environment


temperature shall be higher than-20ºC, if below this temperature, when used in
such condition the Cryogenic Properties of the materials should be confirmed,
and take the necessary protective measures;
8) The rotating part of the mast should regularly lubricate, various pulleys, guide

ropes should also be timely lubricated. The lubrication cycle: each time lifting a
mast 7011# cryogenic grease should be injected to each lubricating point, until
new oil overflow from the face of pulley;
9) Regularly adjust the buffer device of the mast, to ensure that the hydraulic
pipeline and the hydraulic cylinder are in the normal working state, and pipeline,
joint, valve and hydraulic cylinders are anti-collision, pressure protection, fire
prevention and other.
10) Regularly inspect the appearance of the mast according to the SY/T6408-2004
Drilling and Well Repair Mast, Base Inspection, Maintenance, Repair and The
Use, and report the results. Generally one examination for each drilling
month .The form, extent, specific items, defects etc. of the report for the on-site
appearance inspection of the mast can be looked up in the form of the on-site
appearance inspection report for the mast and base. If the mast is used under the
condition of its limit or the structure is in the critical condition of infecting other
safety performance. Considering about regular inspection with more detailed and
higher demanding supplementary procedures. Abnormalities such as loose bolts,
pins out, components damage are found in daily drilling, should take measures in
time to avoid accidents.
11) Clear the dust, dirt and water absorbing material before storing the mast up. Stack
neatly, and keep flat; the pin holes and pin shafts of all ear plates should be coated
with antirust grease, besmear antirust grease over the shaft hole of the shaft and
pulley before wrapped with plastic cloth; after the hoisting rope is coated with
antirust grease, tie into the disc, stored in a dry place.

3.3 Mast Lubrication

The lubricating cup’s requirement for the lubrication of the mast and accessories is
JB/T7940.1-1995 M10×1, the oil and lubrication cycle as following are
recommended.

3.3.1 Inspection category

1)Ⅰ(Routine inspections)
a Check those fastening pieces like the bolt, peg, and safety pin are securely
connected or loss,;
b Check the welding line of the major structure is cracked or not;
c Check if the derrick member has flexural deformation or crack;
d Check if the ladder railing and walking board are maintained in good condition;
e Check if those parts connected to the mast and suspension parts risk falling or
not and the safety chain is firm or not;
2) Ⅱ(Installation and lift)
a Make sure that the assemble relationship of the mast various parts are correct,the connect
of pins are dependable, and connection of pins are dependable, shear-pin and safety pin are
all in readiness, all kinds of binding bolt are screw up;
b Clean up things which have nothing to do with lifting mast to prevent it falling
down and hurting people;
c Make sure that the derrick leg is connected firmly, and the rotating pin hole are
lubricated sufficiently;
d The rope has no obvious defects, no contortion, no snap, no burned part and the
zinced connector does not become flexible,the lifting stringing is tied correctly,
and ward off rope device is complete,each leading sheave is well lubricated
and operating normally;
e The dead line’s fag end of the dead line anchor fixed firmly
f Each joint pin of the “A” frame connected firmly, shear-pin and safety pin are
all in readiness.
g The high holder of the derrick should be accommodated to the highest position.

h The operating floor of the monkey board should be turned around and fixed
firmly, the big rope catch lever on the monkey board should be taken out and
fixed firmly.
3)Ⅲ (12 drilling month)
Conduct a thorough inspection by the safety technology department and make
some necessary repair works according to the inspection contents in appendix
API-4F.
4)Ⅳ (100 drilling month )
Commission the manufacturer or other professional departments for evaluation
and inspection to determine whether it can be used as the original level, if
necessary, carry out the repair work by the professional manufacturers.

3.4 Drilling line inspection and replacement

The hoisting rope should be carefully examined during each lifting of the mast, and
replaced immediately if any defects were found. After the use of hoisting rope,
according to the requirements on the mast, the surface should be coated with grease,
with the protection of waterproof tape, for preventing corrosion from the rainwater, to
avoid affecting the use of the hoisting rope. Because irrigation zinc joint is used in the
rope, in order to ensure the quality, send the orders to the company when replacing a
large rope.

3.4.1 Inspection item:

1) Whether the hoisting ropes are twisted, broken, burned, and corrosive or not ; and
surface rust-proof grease is enough or not;

2) The irrigation zinc rope head is loose or not ;


3) The stressed position on the hoisting rope head has cracks or not.

3.4.2 Condition for change wire rope:

1) The hoisting rope is seriously corrosive, obviously twisted, broken, burned or


with other defects;
2) The irrigation zinc fag end of the hoisting rope is loose or out, and any other
similar phenomenon;
3) The weighted position of the lifting rope head collar has cracks.

3.5 File record for maintenance

3.5.1 Inspection and repair record

The mast inspection and repair should be recorded, so that users can know exactly the
state of the mast, be convenient for the management and maintenance of the
equipment, and can ensure the safe use of the mast.

3.5.2 Mark traceability

The mark is required when replacing or repairing the components, it makes easier to
retrospect, and to ensure the qualified products can be used in the mast repair, to
guarantee the safe use of the mast.

4. Mast Transport and Storage

4.1 Transport

4.1.1 Matters attention when hoisting and transport:

1) Hang the wire line over the hoisting line protect pipe on sections of the mast
when hoisting and transport, to avoid doing harm to the wire line and the mast.
Otherwise, use sling to hoist mast and components, to avoid deformation;
2) Use hoisting tool to lift mast and components, to avoid deformation;
3) Suitable support and packing should be taken, to avoid striking on mast
components or overturn;
4) Specialized packing should be taken for sections and main components of mast
when it is manufactured; original packing is advised each time when you move.

4.1.2 Parameters of main components:

To make hoisting and transport more convenient, shape size and weight of main
components are listed as following:

4.2 Mast storage

Attention when mast storage as following:


1) Dust, dirt, absorbent material should be removed before mast storage, and
besmear antirust grease on ear plate pin hole and pin shaft;
2) Mast should be placed on dry land which drainage well, with sufficient crosstie or
bearer, to avoid deformation or water erosion;
3) Besmear antirust grease over wire line and auxiliaries, place them in dry places
and pack them with plastic cloth;
4) All pins, bolts, nuts or other spare parts installed in site, should be marked and
covered with antirust grease before put them in boxes;
5) Besmear antirust grease over sheaves and shafts, and then pack them with plastic
cloth before reserved in boxes;
6) Use waterproof cloth to cover the mast, when storage outside.

Inspection objective and scope

The objective of making this format and inspection regulation sample, is to give a
guide for making inspection in site and report in a detailed and uniform way. This
regulation faces at operators (or designated representative) , to make a specialized
inspection onto a satisfying degree. If mast is used in upper limit of its loading range,
or its structure suffered a critical condition that may have influence on safety, more
detailed and strict inspection should be taken in regular intervals, or some additional
program should be add into inspection. API provide this format as detailed guidance,
and would not be obligated for its application and scope.

Danger mark

Whist inspecting, damaged parts or equipments should be marked clearly and


obviously, so as to amend when necessary. Bright, high contrast paints is suggested
for marking. When amending, marks should be covered by paint. If there is no need
for danger mark, inspector should write ‘NO’ on it , which show that it pass the
inspection. We suggest inspector to use assembly drawing and user manual to help
inspection. For some projects that cannot access or be not applicable, inspector should
draw a cross line on relevant projects.

Light mast for drilling

For some projects that no need for maintenance, brief description should be
given as that their inspection had passed . For some projects not suitable, mark ‘NA’
(not applicable)in relevant blank . For warpage, wear, damage, weld failure, rust, bend,
all items that need repair, change, or maintenance in future, inspector should mark
‘×’ in relevant blank and provide corresponding description.
