CHAPTER 7 STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS ANALYSIS

7.1 Expected Learning Outcomes (SWOT) Strong points of graduates : 1. Competencies given to graduates meet the needs of job market and user 2. Waiting time of graduates to get a job has relatively been decreasing 3. Job opportunities for graduates vary with increasing level of satisfaction Kelemahan lulusan : 1. Soft skill related to communication, negotiation and presentation of graduates are still less competitive compared to graduates from several other top universities 7.2 Content of Program (SWOT) Strength 1. Curriculum of Department of URP has responded the needs of Association of Planning Education and considered its international reputation by nurturing field trip and study exchange to several partner universities abroad 2. Curriculum development is based on research that is corresponding to vision and mission of university and faculty. Weakness 1. Grouping and Clustering the subjects based on laboratory need to be evaluated in accordance with current development issues. 7.3 Program Specification (SWOT) Strength 1. Curriculum is responsive toward development of vision and mission of university and faculty and meets the need of job market. 2. Gaining A for its accreditation. Weakness 1. Even though Department of URP Undip is specified in physical planning, such specification needs to be enhanced to be able to compete with other planning schools. 7.4 Program Organization (SWOT) Strength 1. Curriculum being arranged is showing relatively good results that are identified by average proportion of number of students passing each subject with good result/score. Weakness

1. Learning method being applied has been various so that it enhances students cognitive, affective and psychomotoric skills.

7.6 Student Assessments (SWOT) Strength 1. The quality of students accepted to Department of URP is gradually increasing. 2. Student evaluation is getting detailed with consideration of learning process and in accordance with university regulation. Weakness

7.7 Quality of Academic & Supporting Staff (SWOT) Strength of academic staffs: 1. No more teaching staff with only bachelors degree. 2. Ratio of teaching staff to student is 1:19. This ratio is in accordance with regulation by National Directorate of Higher Education (1:25) 3. Average teaching load to each lecturer is 13,67 to 14,45 sks-credit per semester, which means that it still corresponds to the regulation by National Directorate of Higher Education (minimum of 12 sks-credit and 16 sks-credit to the max) 4. By 2014, 50% of teaching staffs will be doctors with work period in average of 10 years. 5. Out of 43 lecturers, currently 50% of them are certified. Weaknesses of academic staffs: 1. Non balance composition of age between teaching staffs in Department of URP in the future can cause the so called age disparity between senior and junior lecturer. 2. The lack of teaching staffs due to the huge number of lecturers pursuing their doctorate. 3. Few lecturers with doctorate degree. 4. Few lecturers with qualification as professor and head lecturer. Strength of supporting staffs: 1. They are highly dedicated to their job 2. Enough supporting staffs. 3. Supporting work environment 4. There are specific administration staff according to their position. Weaknesses of supporting staffs: 1. There are some staffs with only high-school educational background. 2. Limited skills and knowledge.

Improvement measures: 1. Recruiting new and young teaching staff on regular basis. 2. Encouraging teaching staffs to pursue their doctorate. 3. Discussing and giving supervision to dissertation proposal making. 4. Spreading the information through our website. 5. Involving academic staffs equally in every service and work to serve civilian. 6. All supporting staffs are given equal opportunity to participate in courses and trainings related to task in department of URP. 7. Forming information system based on position of each staff. 8. Sending non academic staff to go for internship or field trip 7.8 Student Quality (SWOT) Strength: 1. Quality of new students who was accepted through SNMPTN is gradually increasing, it is proven by increasing passing grade to get accepted to department of URP through SNMPTN. 2. Students of department of URP come from all over the country. This proves that department of URP has been well-known as one of planning schools. Weakness: 1. Most of students come from Semarang city and some bordering cities. Improving measures: 1. Promoting department of URP to high schools. 2. Promotion through alumnae of magisterial program of UP 3. Giving incentive to lecturer who directly or indirectly promoted department of URP. 7.9 Student Advice and Support (SWOT) Strength: 1. Each student has academic guardian and counselor that serve students each semester during or out of classes. 2. There is information available for students on scholarship matter that can be seen in announcement board in each building. 3. There is Service English Unit UPT to hold English language course. Weakness: 1. SIA is not well-integrated to university information system.

7.10 Facilities and Infrastructure (SWOT) Strength: 1. Supporting facility for learning and teaching is considerably enough and supportive to teaching and learning condition. 2. Availability of books, journals, online journals is considerably enough. 3. There are some facilities for students such as dormitory, student learning centre, caf, religion centre, bank, mini-market that support all academic activities.

7.11 Quality Assurance (SWOT) Strength: 1. Department of URPO gained A for 2008 national accreditation. 2. Department of URP has its strategic plan for 2008-2011. 3. There are documents on academic quality assurance available. Weakness: 1.

Non optimal implementation of quality assurance body. There is no independent body to take the role of evaluating and developing curriculum, there is only a team to arrange and develop curriculum which is just formed.

7.12 Student Evaluation (SWOT) Strength: 1. Evaluation from students toward teaching process is done on structural basis through SIA as requirement of filling out their study plan card. 2. Input from SIA is used as evaluation material by teaching staff. 3. Students feel satisfied about facilities and academic services. 4. Students satisfaction is increasing that is seen through 3 indicators; discipline of lecturer, teaching material, and learning process through lectures. 5. is an agreement between student and lecture on practicalities of a subject. Weakness: 1. SIA has not comprised the evaluation of facilities and academic services, it however only comprises teaching material and performance of teaching staff. Improving measure: 1. Comprehensive evaluation toward facilities and academic services. 7.13 Curriculum Design (SWOT) Strength:

1. Curriculum development is adjusted to vision and mission of university and responding the needs stakeholder (students, alumnae, companies and professional association) 2. Curriculum change is done once in five year through workshop and it invites alumnae and user.

7.14 Staff Development Activities (SWOT) Strength: 1. Faculty of Engineering and department of URP offer fund and travel fund for teaching staffs who want to conduct research and attend particular seminar or workshop on national or international level. 2. . University, faculty and department hold training for teaching staffs such as pekerti, AA-learning training, TOEFL, conversation class and etc. Weakness: 1. Low enthusiasm of holding seminar on national or international level. 2. Low research capacity of lecturer. 3. Low number of scientific publications 4. Lack of coordination on teaching and learning with student assistant. 5. Opportunities to attend training are not responded maximally. 2 Improving measures: 1. Laboratory holds FORDIP in attractive format. 2. Implementing incentive scheme for research by lecturer. 3. Monitoring and Evaluation of research by lecturer are according to research roadmap by each laboratory they belong to. 4. Publishing papers on international level. 5. Involving teaching assistant and student on certain subject that require such involvement. 6. Having alumnae forum and specific website to accommodate alumnae aspiration. 3. Each batch already has forum as a platform to exchanging ideas and discussion on pre-graduation issues. 4. Meeting and Reunion are done each year. Weaknesses: 1. Alumnae data base for alumnae tracer study is relative difficult to find. 2. Lack of involvement of alumnae in department development programs. 3. Alumnae forum is still using social network such as mailing list and facebook, no certain body to accommodate this. Improving measures.: 1. Optimally developing alumnae link to develop department of URP.

2. Involving alumnae in teaching and learning activities and facilities povision 3. Body to accommodate alumnae and the interest of market is required. 7.16 Output (SWOT) Strength 1. Most of students work on planning related industry. 2. Students GPA is annually increasing. 3. Increasing quality of students final research (indicated by increasing score of their theses) 4. Length of study of student is approaching standard length expected. 5. Percentage of graduate of each batch each year is better year by year (approaching 98%) 6. Job of graduates each year is becoming as expected (61.21%) and 12,07% of jobs are very much as expected. 7. Percentage of acceptance of alumnae in job market (81%) 8. Waiting time to get a job is not more than months in average (30.70%) and some other 22.81% is getting their job in less than 3 months. Weakness 1. Catching aspiration of graduates and alumnae has not been done on periodic and continual basis. 2. The weak alumnae forum including career centre which has not be built to accommodate the graduates from Department of URP 3. As much as 19% of its alumnae has not been employed in planning industry.
