The TNRD chair is voted in by secret ballot each year by the board members. This year, Kamloops mayor Peter Milobar says he won't let his name stand again hes' been chair for the past 5 years. So board members have been looking around the table, and several have apparently pointed to Randy Murray as a good candidate. He's giving it some thought, enough to suss out what kind of support he'd get. Randy was re-elected last Saturday with two and a half times the number of votes as his nearest competitor. Another contender is the mayor of Cache Creek, John Ranta. He's been held the chair for 4 years over the past 20 on the board. The TNRD board is made up of directors primarily from rural & small municipalities, and Milobar's stint as TNRD chair was one of the longest ones for a city mayor. The vote will take place during the inaugural meeting on December 8th.

The weekend officially started with last nights Community Christmas Concert a full house at the Civic Ctre. What a talented town this is! And a million thanks to Kurt Christopherson who has engineered this event skillfully & good-naturedly these many years! Today, the Crafters Mall opens at 2pm at the Civic Centre, until 9:30pm. There is the silent wreath auction, Santas Village & the Community Band performance after the Santa parade which starts at 7pm and winds through downtown. And Baillie House is open after the parade, as well as many shops downtown for Midnight Madness. Tomorrow, the Civic Centre is the centre of activities until 4:30pm. And the Cents game against Prince George at 7:30pm is the evenings highlight. Sunday, theres breakfast with Santa 9am-11am (advance tickets $5, at the door $7) at the Civic Ctre. And a ballet presentation of Cinderella by dancers from Lindas Dance Studio at 4pm at the Civic Ctre. Friday, Nov. 25, 2-10pm & Saturday, Nov 26th 10am-4pm. Stop by after the parade for free coffee or cocoa.

The only really interesting story from last Saturdays municipal election is a most unlikely situation, where theres just 1 single vote separating the candidates for the last spot on council! You couldnt write that into a movie script its too incredible. But there it was and twice, after the recount requested by Shelley Sanders, the unfortunate one with 1 less vote. When I asked her about it, Shelley replied: I believe its about getting your vote out which I obviously didn't do. All the campaigning I did wasn't followed up with 'get out the vote'. I learned a valuable lesson: one can't be complacent if there is a goal one really wants to achieve. It [being on council] was a very rewarding experience and I'll miss the challenge. Statistically, this situation is equivalent to a 30-vote difference in a place the size of Vancouver. But a 30-vote difference sure doesnt have the drama of 1 single vote, does it? Makes you think about what a KL difference your vote can make
