MARKETING APPROACH
If you recall the great difculty that I was having with tractor
shopping, I fnally decided to adopt a totally new approach.
You see, if you look at the whole tractor issue from a marketing
perspective, it would go something like this. People dont simply
buy products (say a car), they are actually solving problems
(transportation) or satisfying needs (escape from the missus).
So if I look at the problem from this point of view ... I dont
need a tractor!!! What I really need is a snow removal solution, a
dirt digging solution and a dirt/gravel moving solution!!! Okay,
I think Im on the right track here. When solving a problem as
complex as this, it always helps to look around and fgure out
what assets you have to work with!!!
Lo and behold, one of my biggest assets is the ... WIFE!!!! A
couple of shovels and I have a snow removal solution!! A pointy
shovel and my dirt digging solution is solved!! Trow in a wheel
barrow and dirt/gravel moving is a breeze!!!
When you look at problems from the proper perspective the
solutions become obvious, I dont need a new tractor, I need a
new WIFE!! Now what specifcations do I need to look for??
Weight, height, temperament, fuel capacity, lifing ability, leg
strength, ............ Oh!!Oh!! Somehow shopping for a wife could
turn out to be a lot worse than shopping for a tractor!! And Im
kind of guessing that a tractor just might be cheaper.
Hey!! What if I shop for a tractor like I did for a wife!! Goof
around for a bunch of years enjoying life, wait for desperation to
set in, and take the frst one that I could fnd!!!!!!!!!
Hold on!! Tat really isnt funny and certainly not true. Well
alright ... I do fnd it funny but it still isnt true. I will probably
never fnd a tractor as good as my dear wife.
Actually, in tractor shopping, desperation did set in, snow was
coming, and I didnt have a
removal solution ready (the
missus threw the ofered
shovels much further than
I thought possible). But
thanks to the support of my
dear wife, we should now
be ready to face winter once
again. 800

HAMPTONPIGGS PEAK NEWS
Lisa and I are back from a very successful trip to Piggs Peak,
Swaziland where we met with all our key partners. We got
conrmation that the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership is doing
many things well and found out there are a few things we can
do better. Sometimes you actually have to be there meet the
people, hear the stories, and get the candid opinions that only
come from personal sharing.
Overall there are far too many eye-opening stories to even begin
to tell in this space. We met a primary school class who told us
in unison they are not afraid of AIDS! and recited their ABCs
Abstinence; Be Careful; and Condomize. We gave a drive to
Sikelo Mahtuza, who leaves his home every morning at 4 am to
walk 7 km to school. We visited the meager dwelling of Mzamo
Makhanya, a very bright 15 year-old orphan that lives with his
grandmother but cant pay school fees to continue his education
next year. And perhaps our most unforgettable encounters were
with the children in the hunger-and poverty-stricken settlement
of Macembeni who got so excited when we delivered soccer balls
and jerseys from Hampton!
Since returning I have been asked by Hamptonians can you see
the dierence we are making? Its a di cult question to answer
because the indicators of a community besieged by HIV/AIDS are
still prevalent. ere is poverty, hunger, and disease on a level that
is unknown here in Canada. But we met 80 happy and hopeful
students at Fundukuwela and Peak Central High Schools who
are there only because of Hamptons support. And at Macembeni
we were greeted by 20 or so extremely grateful elderly people for
whom we are providing clean water.
Lisa and I were blessed to experience rst-hand the powerful
presence that Hampton now has in Piggs Peak. It is through this
presence that we making inroads in the ght against HIV/AIDS.
Perhaps the most meaningful example of this came on the last day
of our trip when we visited the homestead of Nontokozo Mazibuko,
one of our sponsored students. It was because of our personal
connection with Nontokozo through our Starsh program that
we knew her family situation. It was through our connection
with Karen Mandys church that we discovered her mother was
unable to work and there was no food at the homestead. It was
through the donation of a Partnership supporter that we were
able to deliver food to the family. And it was because of our caring
relationship with her that we were able to arrange testing and
treatment for Nontokozos mother.
So, yes, we are making a dierence sometimes in roundabout
ways but thats oen how things work in a neighbourhood. And
Lisa and I saw that Hampton and Piggs Peak are close neighbours.
Please help now by visiting our website hamptonpiggspeak.ca
and making a donation or signing up to be a Starsh sponsor. Our
neighbours need our help. 110

having a blast on stage, but the audience had just as much fun
sharing their time with the players.
Finally, remember to pay your Grad Fees as soon as possible.
Wouldnt it be nice to get that checked of the list and not have

MUNICIPAL GARBAGE COLLECTION
Hamptons New Waste Management Program
As of January 1st, 2012, the Town of Hampton will be taking over
residential garbage and compost collection for the municipality. The
Town aims to provide innovative waste management services to our
residents in an ecient, eective and courteous manner creating
environmental sustainability, promoting diversion and maintaining a
clean town.
The Town of Hampton will be providing residential curbside garbage,
compost (including yard waste), over-sized items and white goods
special collection services. We will also provide collection of litter
receptacles throughout the Town. This material will be transferred to the
landll and processing facilities. As usual, the Town will not be providing
waste management services to residents living in apartment buildings
with three or more units or to commercial and institutional locations.
The Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission will continue to be
responsible for the management of all recyclable materials delivered to
the Blue Bins located adjacent to the Service New Brunswick Building on
William Bell Drive.
The Town will provide each residence with a Garbage Cart free of charge.
The carts will remain the property of the Town of Hampton and are given
to you for your use. Soon we will be delivering a garbage cart to your
home. The cart is very similar to your green compost cart. You may start
using your carts as soon as you get them. As of January 1st, only garbage
placed in the Garbage Cart will be collected by the Town.
Compost and Garbage will continue to be collected on alternating weeks.
Your compost week will remain the same as it is now, as will your
garbage collection week. Please watch for information included with
your garbage cart and on the Town website concerning any changes to
collection days.
Compost and Garbage Carts must be curbside no later than 7 am on your
scheduled pick-up day. If you have a driveway, place your Compost or
Garbage Carts on your driveway; otherwise place either cart at the edge
of the sidewalk, blocking as little of the sidewalk as possible. The cart lid
must be closed and the cart positioned so the handle and wheels face the
road. In the winter, do not place carts behind or on top of snow banks.
Please make sure they are clearly visible and accessible
You may register for the pick-up of oversized items or white goods by
calling 832-6065.
Hamptons Waste Management Program lets all residents participate in
creating a healthier environment. Its also a better way to manage your
household waste, through three easy steps.
1. COMPOSTING food and yard waste
dramatically reduces the amount of waste
we send to the landll. Yard waste, with
the exception of brush, can also be
dropped o at the leaf bin located behind
the rink.
2. RECYCLING paper, cardboard, metal
and plastic at our local Recycling Depot
the Blue Binson William Bell Drive (next
to the Service New Brunswick building) is
a great way to cut down on the bulky
items that quickly ll up your garbage. Dont forget to take your deposit
containers to our local redemption centre for refunds.
3. GARBAGE will now be placed in your new
garbage bin supplied by the Town of Hampton. For
more information on Hamptons Waste
Management Program please call 832-6065, email
info@townofhampton.ca or visit the Town website.
CIVIC NUMBERS
Emergency and Municipal services can't
help you if they can't nd you. Without
properly posted civic numbers to guide
them, emergency responders may have
diculty locating the site of a 911
emergency. Without properly posted civic numbers the Town is unable to
provide you with proper waste management services. Civic numbers are
relatively inexpensive, and extremely eective. All property owners should
ensure they have posted a civic address sign. Signs should be posted on the
same side of the road that the property is located and should be visible
from the street during night or day (unobscured and within 2-6m of the
street works best). The number should be visible facing trac driving from
either direction.

A GIFT THAT LASTS A LIFETIME
Helping your child learn to appreciate. We are
not born knowing how to appreciate. It is a skill
we learn and therefore a skill that needs to be
taught.
Make it a daily activity/routine in your home.
At mealtime or bedtime share with your child
something that you appreciated happening
in your day and how it made you feel. Ten ask your child to
recognize something that they appreciated and how it made
them feel. Tis helps your child to realize how other peoples
actions make them feel and to appreciate people in their lives.
Promote a helping attitude. First we need to model a helping
attitude to our children. So every now and again pitch in with
some of their tasks as this will help teach your child to appreciate
the importance of helping out. By helping your child pick up
their toys, you help them to get a better understanding of how it
feels to have help. Now this doesnt mean that you do it for them,
do it with them which encourages a we approach to getting
things done. When parents constantly do things for our children
we are not teaching them to appreciate the efort it takes to get
things done. By encouraging an Ill help you you help me
attitude in the house, we are helping our children realize that all
these things take efort (another words clean rooms just dont
magically happen and suppers dont just appear) and to develop
a helping attitude.
Te word no teaches appreciation. If we give our children
everything they want when they want, it makes it very
challenging, if not near impossible, to learn gratitude when their
every whim is granted. By saying no to our child, it teaches them
that we do not have to grant their every wish and it will help
them to appreciate our yess that much more.
Your child will not learn to be grateful in one day. It will take
time, efort and lots of teachable moments but they will learn.
And that is something we can appreciate.

RARELY SEEN IN NB
I thought your readers might enjoy seeing a few pictures of a
rarely seen New Brunswick animal. Back in September I was
fortunate to have seen a Fisher in the woods directly behind my
home here in Quispamsis. I was standing still when I caught
some movement and all of a sudden a Fisher popped over
a little knoll just ten meters away. I was very surprised and
equally surprised as to the size of this animal. With its long tail
it would have been three feet long. As a result of this encounter
I purchased a trail camera and set it up in the woods along with
some bait.
For those readers who do not know what a trail camera is,
it is a motion activated ditgital camera set to take pictures of
animals as they move in front of the camera. Over the next
couple of weeks I captured numerous pictures of raccoons and
even a coyote but it took several weeks before I got pictures of
the Fisher. I now have hundreds of pictures as the Fisher got
used to my free meals..
ey are pretty common in the Province trappers can catch
them legally and there is no limit, they are just rarely seen. e
odd part is that its living in Quispam they usually prefer old
growth remote forests. eir favorite food is porcupine one
of the few animals that can prey on them because they know
how to kill them and the quills dont cause them grief. Are your
neighbors missing any cats or small dogs? ey like squirrels
and mice too but will take anything smaller than they are.

and everyone enjoyed the evening. As well, the profts will go to
assist with the installation of a new airtight freplace insert that
will make it easier to heat the upstairs for winter events. News
from the Riverbank: Tanks to the assistance of we have been able
to count redds on several sections on the Hammond watershed.
Last week, we were able to run the traditional Hillsdale stretch
of the river that has been tracked for redds in the past. We were
able to count a total of 137 redds in about a 12 km section of the
main stem. Te run took place November 4
th
, which is earlier
than the traditional spawning peak of November 8
th
on this
river. However, most of the spawning was already complete,
with the fsh dropping down to the major holding pools. Tree
salmon and one grilse were sighted during the run, though.
Additional counting has also taken place on some of the
major tributaries, including Saltspring, Germain, Hanford and
sections of the main stem. Volunteers found an additional 66
redds, making a total of 203 redds observed this season. Well
be doing some comparisons of the count with numbers from
previous years as well. Tis is just another strong indication of
the health of the watershed and the salmon population!
Fish n Jam Wednesday evenings: Fish n Jam is back on a regular
schedule, each Wednesday at 7:00pm. If anyone wants fy tying
instruction they should call the centre and we will try to be sure
we have someone available. Also, we are planning to move the
fy tying downstairs, where there is much better lighting. And,
our musicians are having a great time, with as many as 30 people
showing up every Wednesday evening.

SISTERS & BROTHERS IN SPIRIT GATHERING
Each December 6
th
, for the past 10 years on the National Day
of Remembrance and Action to End Violence Against Women,
a group of women and men gather in the cool twilight at a little
country church on the hillside of Long Reach on the Kingston
Peninsula. Without assuming all is known and understood, we
gather to lament and examine our roles in violence; to state
our complicity in the harm that has been done; to recognize
the structural nature of much violence and to acknowledge the
violence that erupts and oen perpetuates itself in families.
Together we grieve the undercurrents of cutting remarks,
indierence and neglect, scape-goating and belittling that take
their daily toll on the human psyche and diminish joy and life
itself. We gather to lament the violence of our language. We do
al this through words, music, candle lighting, drumming and
silence and hopefully leave with a sense of hope that violence
can be overcome one person, one household, one community
at a time.
is year the worship title has been expanded from Sisters in
Spirit to Sister & Brothers in Spirit to let it be known that all are
welcome. is is a gathering for everyone - women and men
alike. For it will be only when we all come together as peace
makers that violence will cease. Sheila Contreau leads in an
aboriginal drumming circle. Representatives from KV Outreach
will also participate.

JOY
I came across an old photo recently of my daughter at age six,
dancing in the pouring rain in October in a bathing suit. I had
not seen the photo in many years (at least in part because my
other daughter had liberated it from the photo album for a
project a couple of years ago) but I remember the day so clearly I
did not need to. It was an unseasonably warm October day that
simply poured rain. e girls put on their bathing suits and went
out on the bricks in the back yard in water up to their ankles
and danced and sang. e photo has captured that expression
of pure joy that no doubt was what so imprinted the day in my
memory.
As adults, we are so much more controlled than as kids. I think
we have learned to reign in our delight for fear of sounding or
appearing childish or foolish. Fear of what others will think of us
can suck all of the joy out of life. It can be tough to step outside of
our comfort zone and experiment a little. For some of us it gets
tougher and tougher with each passing year, and for some others
of us once we reach a certain age suddenly we can let go of that
concern of what others think and do something just because we
want to (the Red Hat Society being a prime example). Start small
. . . a new hair colour (you can always change it tomorrow if you
really hate it), an outt you would normally consider too bright
(buy it second hand and you wont have too much invested in
it), an activity you have never tried (zip lining - are you nuts!).
e best way to live life joyfully is to savor today. Enjoy whatever
it is you are doing. Enjoy the people around you. Childlike is not
childish. My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but
just enjoy your ice cream while its on your plate. ~ ornton
Wilder. 801
