Chemistry Essentials
Periodic Table Project
Objective: Construct an original Periodic Table of some “everyday object/concept/idea”—known as “elements”
for this project
Requirements/limitations:
1. You may work by yourself or in a group of up to 3 people.
2. Topics are on a “first come- first served” basis, so think of a couple of options. All topics must be
approved by the teacher.
3. You must have at least 20 “elements” in your table
4. All objects/concepts/ideas must be related (i.e. The Periodic Table of Metal Bands – this idea has been
done and cannot be chosen.)
5. Objects/concepts/ideas may be animate or inanimate.
6. You must organize your objects/concepts/ideas in a PT-like format (rows and columns) – at least 4
columns and 4 rows. It does not have to have the same shape as the Periodic Table of the Elements, but
that would be a plus.
7. Objects/concepts/ideas in same column must be a “family” – similar property or properties—remember
it is “periodic”.
8. Objects/concepts/ideas in same row must have a property or properties that change in a predictable
manner as you go across the row – remember it is “periodic”.
9. Each “square” of your table must contain
a. Name of object/concept/idea
b. A symbol for the object/concept/idea
c. Picture or drawing of the object/concept/idea – don’t forget attributions
d. Values for at least three properties of the object/concept/idea.
i. You can choose/create the properties
ii. You can choose/create the values as long as they are consistent.
10. You must have a legend or key on the front of your poster explaining what is in each square.
11. Poster size: no larger than 11” x 17”
12. Poster material – poster board or similar stiffness
13. Your table must have a title The Periodic Table of _________________________ at the top
14. Your table may have “blanks” for “missing elements.”
15. Your name and period number must be on the back of the poster
16. Neatness is important --- use a ruler. You can make the squares on a computer and then cut them out
and attach them to the poster
17. To the back of your poster, attach the reasoning you used for your table. What properties you chose and
why, how you arranged each row and column, and any “missing” objects/concepts/ideas. Include many
examples from your table.
BE SURE YOU CHECK THE GRADING CRITERIA
