Situation 1.
A W10X54 A992 Steel is used as a pin-connected column. The 40ft long column is braced at mid-
height with respect to its weak axis. Determine the axial compressive strength (ASD & LRFD).
Situation 2.
A W14x90 of A992 steel is used as a pin-connected column. The 30ft long column is braced at
mid-height with respect to its weak axis. Determine the axial compressive load. (ASD & LRFD)
Situation 3.
A W12x81 is used as a column. The effective length in either principal direction is 20ft. Using
A992 steel, determine the axial compressive strength (ASD & LRFD).
Situation 4.
Select the lightest W section of A913 Grade 65 steel to carry an axial compression load of 140
kips dead load and 420 kips live load in a braced structure. The column is 30ft long. Assume the
member hinged at the top and at the bottom. Use LRFD. You can use Table 4-22 for the available
compressive strength of the member.
Situation 5.
Select the lightest W section of A992 steel to carry an axial compression load of 20 kips dead
load and 80 kips live load in a braced structure. The column is 22ft long. Consider the member to
be fixed at the bottom and hinged at the top. Use LRFD.
Situation 6.
Select the lightest W section of A572 Grade 60 steel to carry an axial compression load of 20 kips
dead load and 80kips live load in a braced structure. The column is 14ft long. Consider the
member to be fixed at the bottom and hinged at the top. Use LRFD.
Situation 7.
Select the lightest W section of A992 steel to carry an axial compression load of 65 kips dead
load and 150 kips live load in a braced structure with additional lateral support in a weak
direction at mid-height. The column is 14ft long. Consider the member to be hinged at the top
and bottom. Use LRFD.
