The following are guidelines for the civil engineering students taking part in the tech week

structural challenge
1. Structural Design and Integrity (Loading):
 Adequately analyse and design structures to handle anticipated loads and demonstrate
clear load calculations and justification for chosen structural elements (beams, columns,
foundations).
 Consider innovative structural solutions that are efficient, sustainable, and adaptable to
the proposed use of the space.
 Structural Design: Proposals should adhere to relevant building codes and safety
regulations. Calculations or basic design layouts for critical structures might be included.
 Pavement design. Pavement structure that is suitable for the anticipated traffic volume
and type.

2. Sustainability:
 Material Selection: Proposals should prioritize sustainable materials with low embodied
energy (e.g., recycled content, local sourcing) and minimal environmental impact during
construction and use.
 Water Management: Proposals should integrate rainwater harvesting, greywater
recycling, or permeable surfaces to manage storm water runoff and promote water
conservation.

3. Storm water flow design and collection, and disaster resilience:

 Design an efficient storm water management system that minimizes runoff and potential
flooding.
 Demonstrate how the proposed design promotes water conservation and reduces the
burden on existing drainage infrastructure.
 Proposals should consider potential natural disasters in the region and incorporate design
elements that promote resilience

4. Feasibility and Cost-Effectiveness

 Construction Methods: Proposals should be realistic in terms of construction methods
and available resources. Complex or highly specialized techniques might not be feasible.
 Lifecycle Cost Analysis: While initial construction costs are important, proposals that
consider long-term maintenance and operational costs will be favoured.

5. Presentation using Simulation Software:

 Effectively utilize simulation software to visually communicate the proposed design
concept, including structural elements, material usage, and storm water management
systems.

6. Functionality and User Experience:

 Accessibility: Proposals must ensure accessibility for all users, including those with
disabilities. This includes accessible ramps, pathways, and any planned facilities.
 Multifunctional: Proposals should encourage diverse uses of the reinvented space,
catering to various student activities and fostering a vibrant campus environment.
 Usability and Maintainability: Proposals should consider ease of use and maintenance for
the reinvented space. This includes aspects like cleaning, waste management, and
potential repairs.

7. Innovation and Creativity

 Integration of New Technologies: Proposals that showcase the use of innovative
construction materials, smart technologies or sustainable building practices will rank
higher. We encourage collaboration with a student from a different engineering
discipline based on this criteria.
