CIVIL ENGINEERING ORIENTATION

DESIGN PROJECT
FRANKENSTEINING
v. The combination of the best parts of multiple independent concepts into a single
uber-concept project. (Source: Dana Krieger, Minus-8)
INTRODUCTION

As a future civil engineer, you will face different problems in various

field of study. The purpose of different design competitions and
projects is to allow students or entrants to solve a proposed problem
and compete with each other, often times their peers, in order to
receive an award or building project.
GOAL

• Develop a design that is sustainable, resilient and economical.

• Enable the students to develop problem solving skills, leadership skills,
decision-making skills, organizational skills and writing skills.
PROCEDURES

1. Choose a Civil Engineering sub discipline that you and your groupmates
are most interested of.
2. Each sub discipline has a design problem that you need to solve.
3. Create a concept paper and video presentation of your work
highlighting the following:
i. Introduction and statement of the
ii. Value of the study
iii. Description ( Materials and procedure- if applicable; Site description, Area
description, basis of design, purpose, uniqueness – if design problem)
iv. Model/ Design (either a miniature of your work or drawing)
4. SHOULD NOT VIOLATE ANY LAWS.

GO WITH THE FLOW
WATER RESOURCES
BACKGROUND
This is from the 2017 Fluor Challenge: Follow the flow. This was
conceptualized by Team Wabu, a group of engineers from Fluor’s
Manila office in the Philippines. They won an internal friendly
competition held at the company which pave way of conceptualizing
the design challenge in 2017.
“The team came up with an idea to showcase something related to the
abundant Filipino heritage, hence, the Banaue Rice Terraces.” – Team
Wabu
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:
• Anything inside your house that has already been used. (e.g. plastic
container, bottle) As much as possible, do not spend money for this
project. All materials should be recyclables.
• For testing :
• Tap Water
• Ruler
• Container for water overflow
• Approx. 12 mm or 1/2 inch diameter wooden or plastic beads (10), available
from a craft store. The beads can have holes in them. Do not use glass
marbles or metal bearings; they will sink!
PROCEDURE
1. There are no restrictions on the shape of your layers, and layers do not have to be the same
shape. However, each layer must hold at least 1 cm of water at its deepest point.
2. Your model must have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10 layers.
3. The bottom of each layer must be higher than the top of the next layer down.
4. All ten beads must start from rest in the top layer, with no water already in the model.
5. You can only pour water into the topmost layer. There are no limits to how quickly or slowly you
pour the water.
6. You cannot touch the model or any of the beads during operation. However, there is no limit to
the number of attempts you can use to try and get a high score. If your model breaks or does
not behave as expected, you can reset it (pour out all the water and put the 10 beads back in
the top layer) and start again.

SILENT SANCTUARY
ACHITECTURAL AND URBAN PLANNING
BACKGROUND
• This is inspired by the International Architectural Ideas Competition:
Site Temple
• The Site Temple is a secluded place to enhance a meditative
experience of solitude while stimulating the senses through the
elements of light, matter and water; an intimate journey to immerse
oneself into silence and profound tranquility.
DESCRIPTION
• Develop and submit compelling ideas for the design of a Site Temple
located at Cuyo Group of Islands, Palawan, Philippines.
• Must developed planning of the one of the islands soley for the
purpose of meditation.

CLASSIC
Transportation Engineering
BACKGROUND
• This is a classic Rube Goldberg Design Contest.
• A Rube Goldberg Machine (RGM) is a crazy contraption which
accomplishes a simple task in the most complicated – and funniest –
way possible! Based on the “Invention” cartoons of the famous
Pulitzer Prize-winning American cartoonist, Rube Goldberg, actual
machines are at the heart of the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest.
They use everyday items (mostly junk!), they tell a story and, most
important of all – they make you LAUGH. - rubegoldberg.com
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
• Anything inside your house that has already been used. (e.g. plastic
container, bottle) As much as possible, do not spend money for this
project. All materials should be recyclables.
• For testing :
• Door
• Parcel
• Container for sanitation area
PROCEDURE
• Make a Rube Goldberg for opening the door, recieving a parcel/
delivery and put it straight up for sanitation. We want to be as
contactless as possible to the outside world.

GO GREEN
Environmental Engineering
BACKGROUND
• From the Calivigny Garden Guest Houses International Architecture
Ideas Competition, where it seeks for design of guest houses in a
particular area.
DESCRIPTION
1. Design a residential house that would cater the “new normal” needs of a
typical Filipino house.
2. It should conform to the Green Building Code of the Philippines.
3. The minimum space criteria should be met.
Space/Room Description Net Area/Quantity
Driveway or Parking Minimum of one slot each for car, motorcycle and
bicycle.
Office 10 sq.m.
Residential House including at least 2 Bedrooms, 1 50- 100 sq.m. (floor area)
Bathroom, Kitchen-Dining Room-Living Room and

WHERE DO BROKEN HEIGHTS GO?
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
Background
• As a civil engineer we are concerned for our structure's strength,
stability and serviceability.
MATERIALS
• Loose recycled papers (Scratch paper or Newspaper, old bonded
notebooks are not allowed)
• Tape
• Scissors
• FOR TESTING:
• A container for load placement at the top of the tower
• Weights (could be canned goods or things with a known weight)
• Meter
• Electric Fan
PROCEDURE
• Using the allowed materials, construct a structure that can sustain for
10 seconds the given load with a minimum height of 12 inches from
the base.
• TESTING: Put the weights on top and open the electric fan.
