S LANGMEAD Term 2 learning Directions for Year 10 Design class on Wednesday lesson three and Friday lesson one.

● Students should have completed the merchandising task 2 and scanned &/or photographed and emailed all
their work to me last term. If they have not completed that yet- then they should do it ASAP.

● The last task was a Visual Study on tiny houses. There are many videos on the internet for students to watch.
The key focus is to look at sustainability. The task sheet below is for a practical task (from Katie) but just
modify it for a visual Study.

Are tiny houses sustainable?
● Research: Explore research and analyse the issues & questions around sustainability in regards to tiny houses.
● Practical application: Working from a brief research, design and create a sustainable accommodation with focus on
living small and minimalistic.
● Development of original and high quality solutions using personal ideas and statement on overall learning.

Environmental Design – Tiny Houses
Task: You are to DESIGN a Tiny House that would suit the future you in a modern Australia. You will draw inspiration
from the resources supplied and will have a projected budget of $50K.

You need to submit for marks:


● One folder of back up work including all Research, Idea Generation, Refinement and Final Design with
accompanying Designers Statement.
● Final Design is to be refined and clean, submitted over a maximum of 2 x A3 Pages.

♦ Design brief
Write half page about your intention for your tiny house. Use the below information to help you create a brief;

- Provided with 2 x shipping containers costing $3500 each ($7000) from the budget

- Fittings will need an estimated cost; bathroom, kitchen, lighting, air conditioner, fixtures and insulation.
- Environmental/sustainable element – item, concept and potential cost

- Assumed - Land already owned, you’re owner builder and won’t pay for tradie fees for installation or power tools.
Furnishings, should you decide to are assumed to be pre owned and no out of pocket cost is involved.

♦ Research – using the resources provided to price and collect information on the process to create your tiny house.
Research the idea of sustainability and what you could incorporate into your tiny house. Research insulation for the
house and what can be used to keep the heat/cool out in the peak seasons. Research and collect examples of
what other designers have done – specifically shipping containers. Research house plans and how fixings are
represented in a birds eye view. Eg: toilet shower etc.

♦ Idea generation – Roughly 2 - 3 small thumb nail sketches of ideas for your possible house plan. Think about
layout, shape, stacking etc. Plan where designated living spaces would be and how much space they take up
internally.

♦ Final Design – hand drawn birds eye view of plan to scale. 1m : 2cm*
Use a Key if required.

Designer statement – half a page of writing about what you were trying to achieve with your designs, what is your
sustainable element, how successful in your final design?

connections between visual conventions, practices and viewpoints that represent their own and others’ ideas.
They identify influences of other artists on their own artworks.
Students manipulate materials, techniques and processes to develop and refine techniques and processes to
represent ideas and subject matter in their artworks.
