Design Problem Title: A Two Storey Residential Inside Lot

A. Background

A family is the basic unit that forms the society. It is where the formative years of an individual
take place. A typical Filipino family is composed of a working class parents and children being
sent to school. Each family member is expected to perform a specific duty within the home,
being the home is the most intimate space for a family. The Filipino values and culture are very
much present and as expected there are extended family relations in the Family household.

B. Project Brief

With a promising career of the couple as lawyers, they would like their home to be part of their
busy schedule. The couple has 3 children; the eldest is an active choir member and also a
lawyer. The second child is an accountant working in his own firm, and the youngest is the only
boy who is not married, still studying to become a lawyer.

Due to the condition of the metropolis, the couple decided to put up a second home in a
suburban community, a place for their retirement and a place for the whole family to have a
regular get together every Sunday, and a gathering place for all sort of activities that may
happen, for the family enjoys the company of each other, most especially with their extended
members of the family.

The site of the proposed suburban home will be located in an exclusive residential village in
Antipolo City. It is located in the Province of Rizal, about 25 kilometers east of Manila. It is the
largest city in the CALABARZON Region, and higher than that of Metro Manila. It has a beautiful
scenic view of the Metropolis, especially at night. The city is popular for being a pilgrimage site.
It prides itself as the “Pilgrimage Capital of the Philippines”, the Marian image of the Our Lady of
Peace and Good Voyage or the Virgin of Antipolo, which was brought in from Mexico in 1626,
and enshrined in the Antipolo Cathedral, and it has continuous followers among the Filipino
Catholics since the Spanish era.

The inside lot is accessible through a 15 meters wide major road. The site is relatively flat with
ornamental trees and plants at the most part of the land. Among others, the following is the
obvious site characteristics: - Rectangular shape of lot with dimensions of 20m x 30m. - The
shorter side of the lot is facing the street and oriented to the South.

C. Project Objectives
The project will expose the students to vernacular architecture, energy conservation and space
management. It will also enable the students to be familiar with the measurement standards
and proper layout and other design principles of various facilities that are needed. As part of
their formative body of knowledge in designing, it will further strengthen their foundation in the
planning and design fields, and to be able to apply these principles and other design data in a
hypothetical design problem or design project.
