Truism That Design Principles Still Apply for Any New Design
(contrast of colors, shapes, and lines produces harmony
whether done by hand or machine)

Background Information for Learners

The principles of design (and the elements of art) are arguably the cornerstone of
our work as artists and designer. They’re what we use to communicate effectively with our
audience. They’re how we take a concept and turn it into something memorable, engaging
and even beautiful.
A design is a plan or specification for the construction of an object or system or for
the implementation of an activity or process, or the result of that plan or specification in the
form of prototype, project or process.

Digital Technology: Its Efficiency and Accessibility

Background Information for Learners

Digital printing is the process of printing digital-based images directly onto a
variety of media substrates. There is no need for a printing plate, unlike with offset printing.
Digital files such as PDFs or desktop publishing files can be sent directly to the digital
printing press to print on paper, photo paper, canvas, fabric, synthetics, cardstock and other
substrates. Digitization also quickens data transmission speeds. Digital technology has
transformed how people communicate, learn, and work.

Digital printing machines can print on everything from thick cardstock, heavyweight
papers and folding cartons to fabric, plastics and synthetic substrates. T-shirt printing is a
very popular digital printing application, and some digital printers can print on other fabrics
besides T-shirts, including linen and polyester.

Silk-screen printing is one of the most popular printing techniques and is the most
used by companies when printing designs onto products of different sizes and materials.

It has been used for more than 100 years in the commercial and artistic sector and is
mainly used for printing images and designs on T-shirts, tote bags, paper, wood, ceramics
and other materials.

There are different types of silk-screen printing, depending on the aim and the
printing process used. Among them, we can find serigraphy for the graphic design sector,
serigraphy for the art sector and textile printing.

Digitization quickens printing of t-shirt and poster, and other design because it stores
the data in its system storage that is why it can easily be access.

The creation of the design, using computer program is easier. The production is even
made faster with the silkscreen printing machine. This machine allows printing of several
colors on a t-shirt and posters.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Applies Concepts on Steps in Silkscreen Printing

Background Information for Learners

In the past lesson, you learned that digital technology has speeded up the printing
of original designs and made it accessible to many, as emphasized in t-shirts and poster
designs.

Today’s lesson focuses on applying the concepts on the steps or procedure in silk
screen printing. But before going further, may I share a simple background about our topic.

According to Wikipedia, Screen printing is a printing technique where a mesh is

used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a
blocking stencil. A blade or squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh
apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate
momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled
out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed. One color is
printed at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multi-colored image or design.

“There are various terms used for what is essentially the same technique.
Traditionally, the process was called screen printing or silkscreen printing because silk
was used in the process. It is also known as serigraphy, and serigraph printing. Currently,
synthetic threads are commonly used in the screen-printing process. The most popular mesh
in general use is made of polyester. There are special-use mesh materials of nylon and
stainless steel available to the screen printer. There are also different types of mesh size
which will determine the outcome and look of the finished design on the material.” –
Wikipedia

There are also important materials that are needed in doing silkscreen printing. Here
are these materials with its photo and function:

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 8

INK JET PRINTER

This is used for printing the bond paper. There are many
1
types of ink jet printers.

BOND PAPER
It is where you print the image you wanted to print. For
2 those who don’t have printers, you can directly draw
your own image or design on the bond paper.

CUTTER OR
3 CUTTING KNIFE It is used to cut the image you drew or printed.

The silk screen in silk screen printing is a metal or

wooden frame with a fine mesh fabric stretched
over the top. Traditionally, this mesh was crafted
SILK SCREEN from silk thread, but nowadays this has been
superseded by polyester fabrics, which offer the
same performance for a lower price. The thickness
4
and thread count of the mesh can be chosen to suit
the texture of the surface or fabric being printed,
with smaller spaces between threads allowing for
greater detail in the print. -
https://www.customplanet.co.uk/what-is-screen-
printing-step-by-step-i50
A squeegee is a rubber blade attached to a long
SQUEEGEE wooden, metal or plastic handle. It’s used to push
the ink through the mesh screen and onto the
surface being printed. The printer will usually pick
5
a squeegee that is a similar size to the frame of the
screen, as this will give better coverage. -
https://www.customplanet.co.uk/what-is-screen-
printing-step-by-step-i50
Professional screen printers often use permanent
PAINT acrylic ink to print on paper. Water-based and textile
inks are common for fabric printing, according to
Reuel's Art and Frame of Salt Lake City, Utah. Ink
6
thickness should be considered in relation to the mesh
count of your screen to prevent too much or too little
ink from passing through.- https://ourpastimes.com/list-
of-things-needed-to-silk-screen-print-12304297.html

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 9

There are also steps to follow when doing silkscreen printing. Here are the following:

1. Design your print. To start, the printer takes the design they want to create on the
finished product and prints it out onto a transparent acetate film. This will be used
to create the stencil.

2. The screen is prepared. Next, the printer will choose a mesh screen to suit the
complexity of the design, and the texture of the fabric being printed. The mesh screen
is then coated with a layer of light-reactive emulsion, which will harden when
developed under bright light.

3. The emulsion is exposed. The acetate sheet featuring the design is then laid onto
the emulsion-coated screen, and the whole thing is exposed to a very bright light.
The light hardens the emulsion, so the parts of the screen which are covered by the
design remain in liquid form.

4. The emulsion is washed off, creating the stencil. After the screen has been exposed
for a set time, the areas of the screen not covered by the design will have turned hard.
Any unhardened emulsion is then carefully rinsed away. This leaves a clear imprint
of the design on the screen for the ink to pass through.

5. The item is prepared for print. The screen is then placed on the printing press. The
item or garment being printed is laid down flat onto the printing board, underneath
the screen.

There are a number of different presses, including manual and automatic styles, but
most modern commercial printers will use an automatic rotary carousel printer, as
this allows several different screens to work at once. For multicolored prints, this
sort of printer can also be used to apply the separate color layers in quick succession.

6. The ink is pressed through the screen onto the item. The screen is lowered down
onto the printing board. Ink is added to the top end of the screen, and a squeegee is
used to pull the ink along the full length of the screen. This presses the ink through
the open areas of the stencil, imprinting the design on the product underneath.

If the printer is creating multiple items, then the screen is raised, and a new garment
is placed onto the printing board. The process is then repeated.

Once all the items have been printed and the stencil has served its purpose, the
emulsion is removed using a special washing fluid so the mesh can be reused to
create new stencils.

7. The product is dried, checked and finished. The printed product then passes
through a dryer, which 'cures' the ink and creates a smooth, colorfast finish. The final
product will be checked and washed thoroughly to remove any residue, before being
passed on to its new owner.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Producing Own Prints from Original Design to Silkscreen Printing
to Convey a Message or Statement.

Background Information for Learners

Printmaking is the process of art creation with the use of a carved screen to transfer
ink onto another surface. It is often an interesting activity for young learners like you. Even
if you are not born as an artist, you can still achieve unexpected results using a few simple
materials.
The screen-printing process involves creating a screen and utilizes it as a stencil for
applying layers of ink on the printing surface. In this procedure, you require various screens
for distinct colors that are used in the design and merged to get the final look.
The silkscreen printing technique makes use of a woven mesh to support an ink-blocking
stencil to acquire a desired image. The process involves using a stencil to apply ink onto
another material, usually fabric that can keep the image onto its surface.
It is simpler and more cost-effective to utilize silk screen printing artists for mass
production, rather than digital printing on fabric.

Advantages of Screen Printing

• Highly cost-efficient process for bulk orders
• Easy to print on specified areas
• Huge range of printable fabrics such as wood, textiles, glass and more
• Top-quality output
• Long-lasting prints

What are the materials needed in silkscreen printing?

1. The Design
You can draw a design with your own hands or use computer software to
generate the artwork and print in a transparency.
2. The Screen and Its Frame
A screen will be required to make the stencil, through which the ink will pass
onto your shirt. It can be bought from a store, or you can build one for yourself. You
can use either wood or aluminum to make the frame. The screens should be large
enough to accommodate the designs. For designs of standard detail, 110 mash count

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 13

should serve well, however, for more detailed design a screen of higher mash count
will be required.
3. Emulsion
The screen needs to be coated with the liquid chemical called the emulsion.
It is sensitive to light and becomes most sensitive when dry.
4. Exposure Unit
After applying the emulsion, you will need to cure the liquid by exposing it
to the light.
5. Washout Booth
Following the exposure to the light, you will need to rinse both sides of the
screen with water.
6. Inks/Textile paint
Some basic colors will need to be purchased to get things underway.
7. Squeegee
This is a material used for spreading textile paint in the screen.
8. Tacker
It’s essential staple the inside of to the screens before you start printing.
Getting a tape gun will make things simple for you.

Safety Precautions in Silkscreen Printing

• Use protective mask to avoid inhalation of paint.
• All flammable and hazardous materials used must be kept in closed containers and
stored in a safe place after use.
• Use electrical equipment with proper care and handling.

Things to Remember:
• Make sure that the screen is tightly attached against the fabric.
• In printing t-shirts, put a piece of cardboard of paper inside the fabric to act as a
barrier.
• To improve the slipperiness of the ink, add transparent base.
• Washing up of screens and tools must be done immediately after use.

Principles of Photography

Background Information for Learners

Photography is the art, application and practice of creating durable images by
recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an
image sensor, or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic
film.
Photography has been used throughout history and into the present day as a tool
for science and exploration; as a means of documenting people, places and events; of telling
stories and recording histories; and as a mode of communication and critique in our
increasingly visual culture.

CONCEPTS OF PHOTOGRAPHY
1. Focal length
The focal length is basically the distance between a single optical lens and the focal
point, where the light rays meet each other. This is not necessarily the length of the camera’s
lens nowadays. In the end the focal length directly influences the picture detail. The greater
the focal length the narrower the angle of view and the picture detail.
2. Aperture & Depth of field
The aperture is a hole through which light travels, and which controls the amount
of light that enters the camera. The lenses usually contain several thin plates that can be
opened or closed which changes the size of the aperture and therefore the amount of light.
The impact on the photo is shown in the brightness and the depth of field (see below). The
maximum aperture is used when the aperture is completely opened, and the minimum
aperture is used when the smallest hole is chosen.
3. Shutter speed
Shutter speed is the name describing the time the shutter is opened to take a picture.
Like the aperture it controls the brightness of a photo. A faster shutter speed means less light
is entering the lens and vice versa. A low/fast shutter speed tends to freeze motions. This
can be useful when shooting fast moving objects like athletes, driving cars or running water.
4. ISO sensitivity
The sensor can be set to different levels of sensitivity. To express the sensitivity
there are several norms, e.g. ASA and ISO. ISO is currently the most frequently used way
for the sensitivity, and it is also used by Samsung cameras. ISO sensitivity is expressed
using numbers, like ISO 100, which is usually the lowest ISO number you can choose. The

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 20

highest ISO sensitivity is defined by the camera manufacturer and depends on the
capabilities of the sensor used in the camera.
5. Exposure
The combination of the shutter speed, the aperture and the luminance of a subject
determine the amount of light that reaches the sensor. This is called the exposure.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN IN PHOTOGRAPHY

1. Balance - Making sure that the visual weight is equally distributed in your design.
It’s crucial, because it gives a sense of stability and comfort that is enjoyable to the eye (and
brain) of your viewers.
2. Contrast - Too much contrast can easily destroy the unity of your design and
make it painful to look at. That being said, when used smartly, this design rule is a powerful
weapon, since it naturally commands the viewer’s attention. It should thus be used on the
elements of greater importance of your composition.
3. Emphasis (or Dominance) - It occurs when an artist creates an area that is
visually dominant in the composition. Every design should incorporate a primary element
like this, known as a “focal point”, that will serve as a door through which the viewer can
enter the composition.
4. Movement - “Life is like a riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep
moving”, once said Einstein. The exact same goes for your composition. For your viewers
to enjoy it to the fullest, they have to “move” within your design. This is why a good creation
always incorporates a path, which seamlessly leads the eye from one element to another,
while communicating the proper information.
5. Repetition (or Pattern) - A repeated element can create a pattern that is highly
satisfactory. You can create an appealing rhythm on your site by repeating certain design
elements. Make sure you add some visual breaks and white spaces around your repeated
elements, for your viewers’ eyes to rest a little.
6. Hierarchy - simply means that your data is visually arranged, so that the viewers
access the most valuable information first. Most pieces of art carry a few signature features.
But not all of them are equally crucial. The center of a composition is always a strategic
point, since it naturally draws the eye.
7. Unity (and Harmony) - Unity in design exists when all elements are in
agreement. It creates a sense of completeness, and completion.

Parts and Functions of a Camera
(point and shoot or phone camera)

Background Information for the Learners/Introduction

Do you own a digital camera? What is its brand? Is it functioning? Are digital
cameras still worth buying? Are these cameras obsolete? Are you familiar with the parts of
your digital camera?
Learning the basics of how cameras work and knowing the functions of the key parts
of a camera can be very beneficial when you are learning about photography. It will help
you make decisions concerning proper exposures when you are taking pictures. It can also
help you decide which camera features are most important to you when purchasing a
camera, or camera lens.
Digital cameras produce pictures by "capturing" or recording
the characteristics of the light from a scene or subject.
The camera body is a light proof box. The controls for exposure settings and
other effects are located on the camera body. (cameras with Touch LCD Screens may
also have many controls available right on the LCD screen) The camera shutter and
the image sensor are located inside the camera body.
Depending on the type of camera, the camera lens may be permanently attached
to the camera, (fixed lens) or removable. (interchangeable lens)
When the camera's shutter release button is pressed, the camera shutter opens and any
light flowing into the camera lens is directed through the lens aperture and the open
shutter to the camera's image sensor.
The amount of light that reaches the image sensor is determined by size of the
camera lens aperture opening that has been set. The amount of time the light is
exposed to the image sensor is determined by which shutter speed is being used.
When you take a picture, the colors and characteristics of the light that the
image sensor is exposed to is recorded by the image sensor and then saved to the
camera's memory card. (all objects reflect light and colors to varying degrees. That
reflected light is actually what your pictures or images are made of).
The light that is captured by the camera's image sensor and saved to the
memory card can then be reproduced on your camera's LCD screen, on a computer
screen, or as a print on photo paper. Next, some of the parts of a camera and their
functions are explained individually.

The different parts of a camera and their functions.

1. Body is made of high-grade plastic or metal and holds the parts together.
2. Shutter Button is pressed to capture a picture.
3. An infrared camera detects the thermal energy or heat emitted by the scene being
observed and converts it into an electronic signal.
4. Viewfinder shows the image the camera’s imaging sensor sees.
5. A self-timer gives a delay between pressing the shutter release and the shutter's
firing.
6. Flash allows the taking of pictures in low light conditions.
7. Battery Door is a lot where the battery is placed.
8. Monitor Screen frames the image for your picture.
9. Memory Card Door houses the removable storage card.
10. Lens used to focus the images seen at close or far ranges.

A point-and-shoot camera is a still camera made for easy use. It is also called a compact
camera.
A person using a camera should know the parts and their functions. It is important in
taking nice pictures. The parts vary from one camera to another.

The Basics of Photography

Background Information for Learners

Photography, as we know it today, began in the late 1830s in France. Joseph Nicéphore
Niépce used a portable camera obscura to expose a pewter plate coated with bitumen to light.
This is the first recorded image that did not fade quickly.
Photography is an amazing art form that portrays interesting stories, experiences, events,
adventures, history, and many more. It freezes the moment and record real life happenings
that can be cherished for a lifetime.
The word photography means “drawing with light". Are you ready to explore the world
through photos? Let us start by doing photo essay. A photo essay is a narrative that uses a
group or series of photographs to tell a story, evoke emotions or emphasize a specific concept.
Photography essays can be either just photographs or photographs with comments, captions
or text that can accompany them to complete the story. Most of the time it sparks debate
especially if your subject is about current issues.
