Present simple

Irregular verbs

Irregular only in the first person

The following verbs are irregular only for the first person singular. The other persons are regular.

hacer -> hago poner -> pongo traer -> traigo salir -> salgo saber -> sé

caer -> caigo dar -> doy valer -> valgo venir -> vengo

and verbs ending in –ducir and -cer take the ending –zco: conducir -> conduzco traducir -> traduzco

producir -> produzco conocer -> conozco

Vowel changes in the stem

Irregularities appear in all the persons except nosotros/as and vosotros/as, that are regular.

querer pedir

quieres queréis pides pedís

quiere quieren pide piden

dormir jugar

O>UE U>UE

duermo dormimos juego jugamos

duermes dormís juegas jugáis

E> IE: empezar (to start, aloittaa), cerrar (to shut, sulkea), pensar (to think, ajatella), recomendar (to
recomend, suositella), preferir
(to prefer, tehdä mieluummin, pitää enemmän), mentir (to lie, valehdella), entender (to understand,
ymmärtää), querer (to want, to love, haluta,
rakastaa), perder (to lose, kadottaa, hävittää, menettää), sentir(se) (to feel, tuntea), sentarse (to sit
down)

E> I: pedir (to ask for, pyytää), reír (to laugh, nauraa), sonreír (to smile, hymyillä), repetir (to repeat,
toistaa), seguir (to follow, seurata, jatkaa).

O> UE: contar (to tell; to count, kertoa; laskea), costar (to cost, maksaa, olla hintana), encontrar (to
find, löytää), mostrar (to show, näyttää),
volar (to fly, lentää), dormir (to sleep, nukkua), morir (to die, kuolla), poder (to can, voida), llover (to
rain, sataa), volver (to return, palata, tulla
takaisin).

U> UE: only 1 verb belongs to this group, jugar (to play, pelata, leikkiä).

Completely irregular
